2020.09.25 18:01 PeaceSimMy friends and I are urban explorers who break into doomsday bunkers for the super wealthy. We snuck into one my father built, and we'd be lucky if any of us escape from it alive. [Part 3]
Part 1 Part 2 Part 4 Part 5 I last visited a mall during an urban exploration outing about three years ago with Joe and Nicole. It was just before Nicole had met Isha, and about a year before Cheyenne had joined us. It was the largest mall in the region, and I had fond memories of it from its last gasp as a cultural center in the early 2000s. It took my mother thirty minutes to drive me and my then two-year-old brother to it. I remember following her through the massive, snow-covered parking lot into the vast space inside. People from all walks of life happily bustled between well-stocked stores. A Christmas tree stretched up to the wide ceiling of laminated glass. I delighted at the holiday decorations as my mother plopped me into Santa’s lap. Those were good times. But, you’ve probably already guessed the derelict state it was in many years later when Joe, Nicole and I snuck in after dark. The factories that left for cheaper labor overseas took the local economy with them. Only a handful of third-rate stores remained, and they were on their last legs. Ceiling tiles were missing. Rubble and shattered glass lay strewn over large areas of the floor. We were there during the summer, but I’d seen pictures of snow falling through the broken overhead windows and covering where the artificial Santa set had once thrilled me. My present surroundings went far beyond what I witnessed in 2002 and instead represented what I had only seen in movies taking place in the 80s or 90s. Or, at least, they likely did before the floor above spilled a putrid river of decomposed bodies, supplies, and hardening molten metal over its lower level. This floor was twice as tall as the others, allowing it space for an upper and lower level connected by an escalator. The ceiling was painted light blue – a poor substitute for the sky I yearned to see – and held bright lights. Some flickered irregularly while many others, no doubt affected by the massive hole the molten metal had made in the ceiling, dangled limply and failed to function. I noticed a thin and translucent ladder-like structure extending down from the hole. Dozens of the Chindra who had fallen to B3 ran up it back to B2. The mall’s stores sold toys, men’s clothes, women’s clothes, lingerie, electronic gear, food, tools, and plenty else. The bottom level had a merry-go-round (I think I rolled off the tarp that covers it earlier), a food court, and a video arcade in which I found myself positioned atop a claw machine. I’d never won anything from one, but Mason had once snagged a giant plush frog that he’d kept in his room through middle school. “Hey, you!” called a chubby man. He and a curly-haired woman swam towards me through the muck. Both were dressed in grey uniforms. “We’re coming over to you!” Well, at least not everyone here is a clone of my father. I had every reason to expect them to be hostile and prepared myself to dive back into the water and swim out of the arcade. Hopefully, Nicole and Joe had survived and would be close by. The woman climbed out of the water and balanced herself on the glass casing of a coin pusher machine a few yards behind me. I rolled my eyes when I saw the face proudly etched into the pieces of silver within it. The man, not finding a surface that could reliably support him, grabbed onto the top of a mini bowling machine. Their supply belts indicated they were maintenance people. “I haven’t seen you before. You from B5?” the woman asked. I nodded. I had access to there, so it was likely an answer that wouldn’t give away that I was an intruder who’d helped cause this mess. “I didn’t think they let y’all out,” said the man. “The rumors I’ve been hearing are that y’all get pumped full of…well you-know-what, and they keep you on a real tight leash during the pregnancy until you deliver, and then the process starts anew. I didn’t think y’all even had access to the plaza.” What the fuck, I thought. Oh god. I recalled the extensive notes on my card about my physical health, and how Isha and I were both assigned to B5. Was “Med/Rep” a place for…fertile women to deliver children? The repairman’s description didn’t exactly make it sound like a mere facility to assist women in pregnancy; I had the feeling that dad’s calculations alone determined whether and when someone got “pumped full of” you-know-what. The hunter who carried away Isha did so after checking her ID – he must have taken here there after seeing that she was assigned to it. All the more reason to get to her as soon as possible. “Do you know what this disaster is all about?” asked the woman. I shook my head, wanting to give up as little information as possible. “We were here to address an issue with the overhead lighting,” said the man. “But this is absolute hell. Never seen anything like it. Good thing the mall was closed and powered off when whatever this is happened. Otherwise we’d be shocked to death.” “I need to get back to B5,” I said. “All this flooding has disoriented me…do you know the closest way down?” “Well, most of the hatches and the door to the main staircase won’t even open when there’s flooding,” said the man. “And, the elevator’s powered down at the moment.” “There is a door by the restrooms upstairs,” said the woman. “It leads to a maintenance hatch down to B4. It’s on a different system and would probably still work.” My father’s voice rang out over the intercom before I could respond. You’re probably surprised to find yourself in this setting, Robyn. Let me give you a quick explanation. This country saw in the 80s and 90s the beauty of a free market left relatively untouched by those arrogant enough to think they should interfere with it. These shopping centers brought together people from across our society. They spawned innovation through competition. They made us wealthy and happy. So, I decided to incorporate consumer culture into Abernathy City. The denizens of B1 and B2, back when I was still planning on using human workers, would work for a few dimes a day. In their biweekly hour of free time, they would be permitted to spend what they earned down here on the very products they put together. The academics on B4, the medical staff on B5, and the technicians on B6, who earn much more, are still to be the primary customers. Robyn, I’m so close to achieving my dream. All I need is a few more modifications for this whole facility to run like clockwork, and when it does, the plaza will be at the center of its society. Returning to our present predicament: I’ve got good and bad news for you. First, the good news: based on the responses I’ve found online, your summary has thus far not been lacking in detail. As I said before, I haven’t read what you’ve written yet, but I look forward to reviewing it when this is over! Also, you will be delighted to hear that Mason is alive and well! And, your other friend…Elsa was it? Well, I am delighted to inform you that she’s about to begin contributing to one of the most important tasks of all in a self-sustaining society. “What is this?” asked the man. “Who’s the boss talking about?” I feigned confusion even as I fretted over Mason and Isha. Now, for the bad news, continued my father. You and your friends have been a serious annoyance to me. The damage you’ve caused will take quite some time to repair. I’ve put the Chindra to work on patching up the leak you created, and they stopped the flow of water for now. But, the flood may remain in my shopping center for quite some time. You may have noticed that the ooze produced by the Chindra has a binding quality to it that assimilates different life forms into one living entity. Well, let’s just say that I did a bit of experimenting with it to produce something that could defend this facility in a situation like this from intruders like you. This did not sound good. I closed my backpack and tied it tightly to myself. I needed to flee, and I wanted to take my supplies with me. I’m taking off the kid’s gloves, Robyn. It’s time for you to face your hardest test yet. I really don’t expect us to have another of these conversations. You’ve never held up well against strong adversity. It’s been fun, little bird. “The hell was that about?” said the repair woman. As the sound cut off, I noticed a thin red dot on the wall behind me. I followed it as it approached me and then disappeared from the wall. “What’s that on you?” asked the woman. I glanced down and noticed that the light now hovered on my chest. I’d seen enough movies to know what was about to happen. I dived into the filthy water and swam away as I heard two gun shots ring out. When I surfaced at the other end of the room, the man was gone and the woman drifted lifelessly in the water. I pushed her body away from me and noticed two bullet wounds in her; the shots meant for me must have hit her instead. “You can add poor Ms. Hershing to the list of people who’ve suffered because of you,” said my father – not from the intercom, but from the very room I was in. Was he another clone sent to kill me? “Poor Robyn. Always wanting to do good, always ending up doing harm. You got that from your mother. You certainly didn’t get that from me.” I scanned the dimly-lit room for him. Did I see something moving near the claw machine where I’d just been stationed? The water shifted unnaturally there, and something solid glided atop it – a submachine gun with a laser sight. A translucent face gradually turned in my direction. It was my father, but his skin resembled that of the Chindra, in that it heavily blended with the background. “Surprised to see me like this?” he said with a smile. He raised his gun. I dived again and swam desperately for the arcade entrance as I heard the loud thuds of gunshots. Blood dispersed into the water before me as a shot meant for me hit the corpse of a man I recognized as the owner of another doomsday shelter – the one I’d spray-painted months earlier – and an old business partner of my dad’s. I surfaced by the Merry-Go-Round, where I gripped a horse’s head for support as I treaded water. The escalator upstairs (not functioning, of course) was on the other end of the shopping concourse. I had to get up there and take the maintenance shaft down. But, it was a long way to the escalator, and the route was littered with wreckage and floating corpses. Hopefully, I could lock it behind me to at least delay this clone and the third hunter from before, if he was still alive. A ‘thump’ sounded on the roof of the merry-go-round directly above me. “Little bird,” called my dad. He must have climbed up there and seemed to be using a flashlight to scan the area ahead of me. “I know where you’re going. And I’m not going to let you make it upstairs. You could really use a pair of wings now, couldn’t you?” He laughed. “Boss, is that you!” cried the voice of the repair man. Dad’s flashlight shifted to where he’d waded by the entrance to a toy store. He must have fled after seeing his partner shot. “Have you seen my daughter?” the clone asked. This distraction would be my only chance. I knew that I swam for it, I’d never make it to the other side without being spotted. So, instead, I lay on my back, kicked off from the merry-go-round, and floated, doing my best to quietly fit in with the numerous bodies that filled the corridor and only gently kicking to keep myself moving in the right direction. It was hardly a perfect illusion, but hopefully I would avoid detection in the darkness long enough to at least put some distance between me and my dad. “I think so, a young woman was with me in the arcade,” I head the repair man say. His voice was close; I must have drifted towards him. “Why can’t I see you, boss?” “Where did she go?” asked my father’s clone. I brushed against another body as I glided further away, measuring the distance by the passing lights on the ceiling. “No idea,” he said. “Where are you, exactly, boss? All I see is the flashlight.” I drifted underneath several functioning lights that cast me in greater visibility. I tried not to shiver in the freezing water. Thankfully, my father didn’t seem to notice. “Then you’re no use to me,” said my father. I felt myself bump into the maintenance man. “Huh?” he said, startled. “Wait, boss, I think I found-” Two more shots rang out. The heavy force of the man’s body crashed into me, sending me underwater. There was no use in pretending any longer. I swam while submerged, pressing onwards despite the weight of my soaked backpack, as far as I could go. When I surfaced for air, only a few shops remained between me and the escalator. A ring of light appeared around me only a moment later. I dived again as my dad fired. Luckily, a nearby half-eaten corpse shielded me from several shots as I swam closer to my destination. I didn’t have time to process why I recognized the corpse's faded dyed hair. Bullets hit the water all around me again when I next surfaced. Most landed in the space between me and the stairs; he was trying to block my path. One bullet ricocheted off the wall. The next thing I remember was incredible, reverberating pain as high-pitched noise flooded my head. I grabbed at my left ear and, to my horror, discovered that part of it was missing. Panic and shock ran through me. I hurried into the nearest store, which sold men’s clothing. I dizzily sputtered in and out of the water. The world spun around me even as I grabbed onto the dry top of a clothing rack and tried to calm myself. “Clever girl, blending in with the dead like that,” called my father. “But not clever enough. I’m coming for you. We’re about to have a long-awaited reunion.” He was getting closer. I heard distant gunfire from upstairs; perhaps Nicole and Joe were facing a similar enemy. I needed a place to hide; maybe I could lure him deep into the store and sneak out the way I came in while he searched for me? I found myself against a wall. How did I even get here? What part of the store was I in? I was bleeding, a lot, and likely to get infected from exposing an open wound to the toxic substance in which I was immersed. “I’m here, darling! Come to papa,” said my dad. The noise my wounded ear had sent into my head had diminished enough for me to understand him. I used the wall to push myself along until I found a corridor away from the soaked clothes that filled the store. I realized I had stumbled into a series of dressing rooms. I swam to the last one and locked the door. “You’ve got a lot working against you, Robyn. Not only am I stronger and smarter than you, but I also know how you think. You’re hiding in here, hoping to draw me in, and to then sneak out the way you entered.” That was may plan, until my dizziness led me to corner myself. It was only a matter of time before he found me. From the sound of his voice, he was in the area by the check-out counter. I had a few moments as he looked through the store. “I’ve read your diaries, your emails, your text messages,” he continued. “It delighted me to no end when I learned that you would make a trip out here. If you’d texted the date and time, I would have prepared a welcoming committee. Why did I spy on you like that, you may be thinking? I wanted to see if you measured up to the family name. And guess what? My early assumption was correct. You didn’t.” I threw my drenched backpack onto a small raised surface for placing clothing as I stood on a cushioned sitting platform that extended from the changing room’s wall. I took out two objects. “Your grades were painfully mediocre. You didn’t excel at anything – sports, hobbies, you name it. You even lacked your mother’s ability to find a superior marital partner – her only skill.” He was on the opposite side of the store now. If I wanted to escape, now was my chance. But I knew I wouldn’t make it. “I know everything about you,” said my father. He was at the entrance to the changing area. Luckily, I had a plan. And that plan involved him coming to me. “I know you had your first kiss with that no-good Sheldon boy after senior prom. You waited over four years after that to get laid, only to lose it in a lousy one-night stand with a guy you’d just met and never talked to again. ‘The most awkward two minutes of my life,’ you texted Nicole the next morning,” he said, in a mocking voice. “Haven’t held a guy for more than three weeks since.” If he was trying to rile me up, he was succeeding. I’d known about the diary entries, but it pained me to realize that this monster had reviewed virtually every private correspondence I’d ever made. “It’s no wonder you’ve ended up at a convenience store, spending your free time with a bunch of dropouts and vandals,” said my dad. He knew he’d found me. I heard him push open the door to the first of the three changing rooms. “You always were a disappointment.” The second door opened. I put on the goggles I’d taken from the hunter earlier as I braced myself. “I blame your mother for creating you,” taunted my dad. He was in the stall next to me, moving more slowly as he cherished the moment of impending victory before he caught up with his prey. “But after she gave me the male heir I wanted, she became useless to me. She wasn’t worth the trouble it took keep around, much less the trouble of divorcing her. Little bird, you still think, even after all that you’ve seen today, that she died in random accident, don’t you? You inherited that naiveté from her. Not from me.” I’d never been more furious as rage coursed through my veins. Even so, I composed myself and lifted my arms. “Our journey is at an end, Robyn,” said the clone. "I hope you've enjoyed the tour so far." He was directly in front of me; only the flimsy wooden door divided us. I fired three times through the barrier. He made muffled screams. I heard him crash into the water. “You didn’t count on one thing, dad,” I said, kicking the door open. My goggles saw through the camouflaged skin of my fleeing father. One of the shots had hit his gun, which drifted broken in the water, and the others had hit him. As he feebly tried to wade away, he brushed against the wall and left behind a trail of blood on its white paint as he did so. “You’re far sicker than I ever realized,” I said as I followed him. “But I knew that you spied on me when I was younger. I knew you were lying when you said that you wouldn’t review my notes until this is over. More specifically, I’m sure the clone I’ve been talking to has been reading them and sharing their contents with you. That’s why I didn’t mention that I picked up a gun from the fallen hunter in the last update. That’s why I wrote that I was ‘unarmed and defenseless’ when I really wasn't.” I fired a fourth shot into the back of his head. He collapsed into the water and stopped moving. I returned the pistol to where I’d kept it in my backpack. I’d known that my dad would outgun me in a fair fight. My dad was a gun enthusiast, whereas my only experience with firearms was when Nicole helped me fire a few rounds at a makeshift shooting range the five of us had made out of several weeks’ worth of empty beer cans in my backyard. But I had a plan in case I got cornered, and, miraculously, it had worked. As I reached the escalator, I heard the sounds of a firefight upstairs. I climbed the steps carefully, staying low and using the metal sides as cover. I saw Nicole crouched by the front counter of a jewelry store. Her stained, sleeveless white t-shirt exposed the strong arms with which she held the shotgun she’d nabbed earlier. In the back of the store, behind a cash register, was the remaining hunter – yet another clone of my dad. Unlike the one I had just fought, he was fully-visible and didn’t seem to be ‘joined’ to any degree with the Chindra. Did they all retain my real dad’s memories and consciousness? How was that even possible? He noticed me and let off several shotgun blasts. I ducked and covered my head as the metal around me shook violently. I heard two more shots after that, followed by Nicole’s voice. “You can come out now, Robyn. I’m so glad you’re alive.” I emerged cautiously to find Nicole standing over the hunter’s whimpering body. “Joe and I have been in a long standoff with him. He didn’t know I was there. Your distraction was all I needed to get the drop on him. Shot him twice in the chest.” She snatched away the dying hunter’s shotgun, removed its shells, loaded some into her weapon, and slipped the rest into her backpack. “You look like you’ve seen better days,” said Joe as he stood up from behind a sunglass stand. “But I’m glad you’re okay. That guy had me pinned down here for ages.” “You need to get that treated,” said Nicole, motioning to my ear. She whipped out her first aid kit, removed an antibiotic ointment, and prepared a set of bandages. “Go ahead,” whined the hunter. A pool of blood extended out from him, and he clearly had no capacity to move. “Get it over with and kill me.” “Let me have your knife,” I said to Nicole. She looked at me blankly. “Now!” I asserted. She handed it to me. “Hold him down if he tries anything,” I ordered my friends. I proceeded to drive the blade into the hunter’s chest between his gaping wounds. The hunter screamed in further agony. “What are you doing?” cried Joe. “How about we make this is long and painful as possible?” I said. “Unless you answer my questions.” “Robyn, we’re not like that-” Nicole said. “Do you have all of my dad’s memories?” “Yes,” croaked the clone. “Up until he last had his brain scanned on B6; about a year before the helicopter accident. After that, I have the memories of the primary clone, who you’ve been hearing on the intercom, and then my own memories once I was created from him.” “Did you really kill my mother?" The clone smirked. “I’ve made some mistakes in my life. One of them was waiting six years after Mason’s birth to get rid of her. I should have done it sooner.” He spit blood up at me. Anger coursed through me. I dug the knife deeper into him and twisted it. “One more question,” I said, as his blood and saliva ran down my cheek and dripped back down onto him. “What does that clone – the ‘primary clone’ – want with Mason?” The clone nodded through the pain of two gaping shell wounds and a knife protruding from him. “Your real father – the one who died in the crash – has been kept in the same stasis chambers used by the Chindra since the helicopter accident. He isn’t dead, just extremely close to it. The one you saw at the funeral was a clone created just to be used there as a prop.” “What does that have to do with Mason?” I asked. The clone eked out a gleeful smile. “Your real dad wants to resume the life he had before the accident. We’ve developed a technology to help him – one that can transfer a consciousness between bodies. Not just create a new clone, but actually cause him to experience his own life continuing in a new body. It is built around the mechanism through which the Chindra queen communicates with the rest of the Chindra.” “The bodies have to be compatible, and compatible bodies are hard to find,” the clone continued. “They require certain physical, cognitive, and genetic commonalities, and differences in sex and gender can pose substantial obstacles in humans. So, for the time being as we continue the testing phase, we rendered the facility only accessible to those fully-compatible with him. We were soon going to begin soliciting ideal individuals using our access to medical records. If we got desperate, we would even accept someone half-compatible like you, though your father would be reluctant to try a risky procedure just to inhabit the body of an underperforming female. But, luckily, you and your friends brought an excellent candidate right to us.” “Your father wants to take the form of the son who better resembles him and bears his name. The procedure will upgrade Mason’s current consciousness. The boy will simply be replaced by an improved version of himself: his father. Have I answered all of your questions? Can I die already?” “Fuck all this,” said Nicole. “Mason,” gargled the clone as he raised his head closer to me, “will grow up to be just like me. It is inevitable.” I kicked the knife deep into him with all the force I could muster. The clone finally stopped breathing. Joe kept saying something to try to calm me down. I didn’t – couldn’t listen. I walked clumsily in a circle before collapsing on the ground. When I awoke, Nicole had wrapped a towel around my wet form and bandages around my ear. Joe had gathered our armaments – the shotgun, my firearm with four bullets left in it, a fire ax, and Nicole’s knife. Joe, who still had Mason’s backpack, realized it contained Mason’s key card, which will give us access to the bottom level when we needed it. I shared with them the information I’d obtained about the service entrance to B4 and then the painful news I’d heard about where Isha had been taken. Nicole was as furious as I expected. A sense of urgency drives each of us – to get Isha, to get Mason, and to get out. My iPad, barely operating and with a crack in its screen, buzzed, and I quickly typed this update just in case my dad (should I say ‘the primary clone’?) still has the ability to cut off the air supply if I fail to do so. Don’t worry – there are no lies or omissions this time around. I hope, dad, that you can forgive that minor deviation from my otherwise thorough notes. Nicole, Joe, and I are heading down for Mason and Isha. We will stop at nothing, and I recommend warning anyone else still present in Abernathy City to stay the hell out of our way.

2020.09.22 17:04 mereszd(Potential) expat looking for some help
Dear wien! I'm yet another expat who is potentially on the move to Wien from Budapest (so not a too big of a move). I don't speak German (yet). I've been browsing sites such as https://www.willhaben.at/ and read through numerous posts on this sub and checked the wiki as well, but to be completely honest, I'm still overwhelmed by the renting. I have a couple of questions to which I'd really appreciate replies. What I'm looking for: I'd like to live alone, but I don't have huge needs, a ~40 square meter flat is perfectly fine for me - preferably furnished, or partly furnished. I'm looking in the range of max 700 euros. The company to which I've received an offer is near Euro Plaza in Meidling, so I was looking for flats in Margareten and Favoriten (I've heard that Favoriten isn't necessarily the best place to live in). I'd prefer to have max 30 mins of commute. Now, to the questions:
I'm aware that lot of the flats are rented out by the City of Wien. When I see Gemeindewohnung, it means that it's from the City, correct?
On lot of the offers, I've seen dates such as 2019 November, does that mean it's an old posting that hasn't been taken down, or it has to do something with the lease?.
Still these type of flats, what does "Nur Vormerkscheinbesitzer - vor Nov 2019" mean? Google translates this to me as pre-registration, does that mean that I shouldn't even look at these type of flats?
Still City of Wien flats, on these I usually see something as "Ablöse" which can be quite high (3000 euro, 5000 euro or so). Is this something I always need to calculate with?
In general, I really welcome any tips or tricks for an expat like me, if I do manage to move out, I'll happily provide some beers in exchange :)

How much are tickets to the NFR?
National Finals Rodeo Tickets have been placed on this website by our trusted brokers, who offer those tickets in a range of values. Have a look at all the ticket prices and select the tickets which best suit your budget. 2020 Wrangler NFR new ticket prices are as follow:
Beyond the payouts for the Cowboys, the PRCA estimates that the event brings in about $90 million annually to the Las Vegas economy. Furthermore, recent attendance stats have shown that 177,565 rodeo enthusiasts decked out in Wrangler jeans, Justin boots and cowboy hats attended events at the Thomas & Mack with an additional 40,000 fans who watched at the 40 hotels who hosted watch parties. It is during this rare time of the year that many marquees on the Strip have the face of bull riders replace DJs’ faces.
Seven main events have historically taken place at the NFR. Each event has its own monetary prizes that are paid out, and those payouts are determined by each top-placing competitor’s rank in relation to the event’s overall prize pool. Individuals placed in the top-six of a particular event are paid out accordingly, while individuals placed in the top-eight of the overall NFR are also paid out. The NFR’s main events are as follows:
This consists of a horseback cowboy using a bareback rigging as the primary means of staying on top of the horse. This grip has often been compared to the equivalent of hanging on to a suitcase handle and makes for the only support that a cowboy has on top of the wildly bucking horse. An 8-second ride constitutes a qualified ride and the cowboys is judged on riding technique.
This act involves a horseback steer wrestler, alternatively known as a “bulldogger”, bringing a fast-moving steer to a halt on its back as fast as possible. The bulldogger utilizes a combination of strength, technique, speed, and precision to jump off of their horse from a designated starting point and onto a steer sprinting off from the same starting point.
One of two horseback team members whose job is to successfully rope the head of the steer in one of three tries as fast as possible; around both horns, around one horn and the head, or around the neck.
One of two horseback team members whose job is to successfully rope the hind legs of the steer as soon as the header has successfully done their part. To avoid a 5-second penalty for roping only one hind leg, the heeler must rope both hind legs.
Saddle Bron Riding
Similar to Bareback Riding, the goal of the horseback cowboy is to maintain their balance as much as possible for 8 seconds while the horse is bucking. In this event, however, the cowboy sits on a saddle while using one hand to hold on to a thick rein that’s attached to the horse’s halter.
This event centers around a cowboy on horseback attempting to restrain a calf by throwing a well-timed rope loop that’s attached to the cowboy’s horse. The cowboy and the calf both leave from a designated starting point, with the calf getting a slight head-start. The cowboy depends on the horse to mitigate any slack in the rope after dismounting, then proceeds to tie-up the calf as fast as possible.
This is a women’s event where horseback cowgirls race against the clock to complete a strategically set course where barrels are set up as landmarks. The intent is for the cowgirls to complete a cloverleaf-shaped run around 3 barrels placed in a triangular formation as fast as possible. Barrels that are accidentally knocked over result in 5-second penalties.
The cowboy on top of the bull has the main objective of staying on top and maintaining their balance for 8 seconds. They are judged based on technique and can earn extra points by spurring while the bull is bucking. The cowboy stays on top of the bull by grasping a flat braided rope, which also wraps around the bull’s chest.
Being crowned the All-Around Champion speaks volumes about the versatility and high level of talent exhibited by the winning cowboy. In order to receive this honor, the cowboy must have won the most prize money in a given year and competed in at least 2 NFR events while earning at least $3,000 in each of those events. This is widely known as the highest honor bestowed by the PRCA.
There are 120 cowboys from all over the United States that will step foot as competitors within the NFR. A full list of the contestants can be found on the event’s Contestant Roster page. The top 10 ranked competitors are as follows:
Tuf Cooper – Tie-Down Roping
Trevor Brazile – Tie-Down Roping
Sage Kimzey – Bull Riding
Tim O’Connell – Bareback Riding
Jacobs Crawley – Saddle Bronc Riding
Caleb Bennett – Bareback Riding
Ryder Wright – Saddle Bronc Riding

The NFR has consistently been referred to with this phrase because of the sheer massiveness of its popularity and money-generating power within the context of rodeo. The event is considered to be so big and consistently sold-out that the UNLV basketball team that normally uses the NFR’s venue during the season has to annually build its schedule in a way that keeps the team on the road for the duration of the NFR festivities.
Miss Rodeo America
This event is a pageant that takes place in conjunction with the NFR as part of the NFR’s overall festivities. State rodeo queen winners from across the United States compete for the Miss Rodeo America crown and put themselves in line to potentially win $20,000, among other smaller prizes. In addition to the prizes, the winner is expected to travel to various rodeos throughout the United States and to promote the rodeo during the subsequent year.
Wrangler NFR Preshow
The former Miss Rodeo America titleholder is no stranger to the excitement of the “Super Bowl” of Western competition, with six years of WNFR reporting under her belt. She is most excited about bringing the pre-show to the fans. Be prepared for this Wrangler NFR Preshow, don’t miss a single moment of the Pro Rodeo live action.
For those that need a break from the constant adrenaline that comes with the NFR’s main events, the Cowboy Christmas experience allows for a welcomed change of pace. This portion of NFR centers around cowboy shopping and serves as a marketplace for hundreds of exhibitors from the United States and Canada to sell to thousands of eager buyers. Typically taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Cowboy Christmas will also move to Arlington, TX in 2020. All exhibitors will have the opportunity to Opt-In/Opt-Out for 2020.
The 2019 PRCA season has been extremely competitive as a lot of the top cowboys are gunning for glory. Tuf Cooper sits atop of the all-around standings and many experts believe that he is going to win his second all-around title in a row. There will be a lot of close competitions and many of the world championships could come down to the last day. You can check the current standings here.
NFR Prize Money
The total payout for the entire event is $10 million and will remain at that amount until 2020. After that, the amount will be adjusted and remain in place for the subsequent five years. All 120 qualifying contestants receive $10,000 as part of participating. This year’s detailed payout structure can be found on the PRCA’s 2019 Wrangler NFR Payoff page.

All in all, the National Finals Rodeo is a landmark event and a de facto defining period of time within any given rodeo year. For anyone who is a fan of rodeo, the main events and the surrounding festivities are must-see events and must-participate experiences if the financial means allow for it. Don’t miss a minute of the exhilarating NFR live stream action this year from December 3rd until December 12th.

PART ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX For the next few hours, Robbie stayed with Mason while Daniel interviewed him, fully expecting the worst of the detective. Things such as cruel swipes about career choices or being a junkie, or the likes. As it turned out (credit where it was due and all), without Llyr around to wind him up, the detective was a really decent guy. He should’ve realised that before this. He’d only spoken to Daniel a few times in passing and moulded his low opinion based on those moments of friction and what Sam had told him. And no fault to Sam for siding with his father in things (because that’s what good sons did) but Robbie knew Llyr could bring out the worst in anyone, given enough time. Hopefully, that would change now that things were finally moving in the right direction with Ivy, but time would tell on that score. Bottom line, instead of being an overbearing and demanding brick, Daniel was sympathetic and understanding, taking a lot of breaks, and even going as far as to get some snacks for them while Mason cried on Robbie’s shoulder for a few minutes. Hence the many hours instead of the one or two Robbie had been anticipating. It was well after four when Daniel called it a day and Mason’s parents were finally allowed back into the room. At first, Mr and Mrs Williams had rushed excitedly to the bed, but once they realised Robbie had been allowed to stay with their son during the interview while they'd been forced to wait outside, they were far from happy. “Ma’am, sir. Due to circumstances beyond any of our control, Robert O’Hara is privy to confidential information regarding this case which quite frankly, you are not,” Daniel said, stepping in before things could spiral once more. “It is as simple as that. Either Mr O’Hara was in the room when I interviewed your son, or no one would have been.” Mason’s eyes flared at the potential blow-up and his fingers hooked around Robbie’s wrist to keep him close. Seeing that, it still took the Williams’ almost a minute to accept it with any hint of decorum. Mrs Willams was the first to speak. “Be that as it may, and Robbie dear, I do appreciate you being here for him all this time, but would you mind if we had some time with our son now, please?” “Ma, no! Robbie promised…” Robbie nudged Mason’s shoulder to silence him. “Give your parents this, man. They’ve been waiting just as long to see you awake as I have. I can catch you up on everything that’s been happening in the apartment when I come back…” “You better…” Mason growled, with a sulky pout. “Mason,” his mother warned with a frown. “But Ma…he knows the …” “I don’t care if he’s on a first-name basis with the bloody President, boy! You don’t be giving your ma any of your lip or I’ll knock you right back into a coma!” Tod Williams shot back. Then, as if to completely undermine any tough guy stance he might’ve been taking, the older Williams man hooked his hand around his son’s neck and hauled him away from Robbie and into a tight embrace. “And don’t you ever, ever scare me like that again.” He gave him an even tighter hug, then pushed him out to arm’s length, as if embarrassed by the show of emotion and squeezed his shoulder. “You hear me, son?” Mason was shellshocked by the open display. “U-Uuhh, y-yeah,” he stammered. “I-I…” But that was as far he got, for Robbie used the embrace to extract himself from behind Mason and Mrs Williams swooped in for her hug on that side, with no intention of letting go. Watching Mason being fussed over by his parents, Robbie couldn't help but smile somewhat enviously as he joined Daniel near the door. “I’ll be back tomorrow, buddy. Promise,” he added, and as Mason’s eyes met his over his mother’s shoulder, he blew him a two-fingered air kiss in farewell. “Thanks for your time, Mr Williams,” Daniel added, with a nod and smile of appreciation to Mason. With that, he and Robbie left the Williams to their reunion. “I owe you an apology,” Robbie admitted after they had some distance between them and Mason's room. Daniel glanced across at him. “How so?” “I had you pegged as a total mass-role and I was wrong.” As Daniel’s lips kicked up on one side at his terminology, Robbie growled and shook his head, waving his hand through the air. “Don’t bucking say it. I’m still technically in my first day of profanity prison and it already sucks.” “Profanity prison,” Daniel repeated, with an amused, though sagely nod. “I like that. But why technically?" "Pop and Aunt Collette had me inside my head for what amounted to six months last night." Daniel grimaced. "So a one-month sentence just got turned into a seven-month sentence. That's gotta bite." Robbie went to flip him the bird and thought better of it, curling his fingers into a loose fist instead. "And then some," he agreed. "Has anyone told you to try non-swearing alternatives?” It was Robbie’s turn to nod. “Yeah, but old habits die hard.” “If it’s any consolation, it gets easier.” “I certainly hope so. Because it’s a royal pain in the wrasse at the moment.” “Speaking of being inside your head, you’re going to have to practice balancing out your emotional states before and after internalising.” Robbie’s narrowed gaze slid to the right. “Excuse me?” “You internalised just after that phone call from your roommate's boss. I know, because from one instant to the next, your aura went from the bronze of murderous to the sapphire blue of everything being completely under control. It wasn’t a natural progression.” “You were weaving me?!” “I was watching you … through the eyes of a weaver. Not the same thing as weaving you,” he corrected. “But we’re getting off track. Most people can’t see your aura go from bronze to blue the way I can, but they can still sense it. To them, it's as if you’ve changed moods in an instant. Like a schizophrenic. And if you’re not careful they’ll start suspecting you are one. How long were you actually gone?” Robbie shrugged without knowing. “A while. Without Pop and Aunt Collette with me, I don’t really know how to make a clock work in there.” Daniel snorted in surprise. “Never really thought about how difficult that would be,” he admitted. “Yeah, it’s a witch … DANG IT!” Robbie shouted, taking a small hopping step that landed both his feet on the floor in a childish stomp of frustration. "I'm getting fed up to the back teeth with this rhyming full-pit!" Daniel gave a quiet, dark chuckle. It was still loud enough. "Tuck you!" Robbie swung a sideways kick at him, but Daniel easily jumped out of the strike range. "Okay," the detective laughed, holding up a finger in a blend of warning and surrender. "Enough. This is a hospital, and if we don't quiet down, I'll have to arrest us both." With an impish glint to his eyes, he leaned forward and added, "Or worse. We'll be forced to explain ourselves to my mother." That brought up an interesting point to Robbie. "Who is your mother?" "Lady Col." Robbie stumbled a step. "Lady Col's your mom?" "Yeah," Daniel drawled, all sense of amusement evaporating until he was casting an accusatory look Robie's way. "Why?" It was Robbie's turn to hold his hands up in surrender, going as far as to step away from the detective. "Nothing, man. Honest. I just didn't make that connection. Llyr said he brought Lady Col in and used his favour to bring Mason back to us, so I never realised you and Mason's surgeon were connected." Resuming his pace, he added, "Speaking of crippled roommates, are you okay with me going over to One Police Plaza to check up on Angelo before I go home?” Daniel nodded curtly but placed a guiding hand on Robbie’s shoulder. “You’ll never get in without me,” he said, steering him towards the men’s room at the end of the hall. “Just relax, and let me lead.” They opened the first door that separated them from the hallway, but instead of walking on through into the second door that led to the urinals and toilet stalls, Daniel held him still until the first door closed. Then he realm-stepped them both to a darker corner of the car lot behind the twelve-plus story building that made up 1PP. Daniel had a point. Just because he could realm-step anywhere, he needed to know where he was going first. He'd never even been to One Police Plaza. Nor would he have gotten inside without Daniel. The number of checkpoints and badge swipes was ridiculous! Fortunately, he didn’t have anything on him but his wallet and phone, so his initial wave down by the officers out the front didn’t amount to much and the two were cleared to go further into the building. Robbie followed half a step behind Daniel, allowing the older man to deal with anyone they came across. That didn’t stop someone from colliding with his shoulder. Robbie half spun with the hit, noticing almost in an afterthought the white tails of a lab coat and the high shine of the black alligator leather shoes beneath the long dark pants. Fancy shoes … nice salary … “Shirk,” he still snapped at the disappearing doctor. The guy didn’t even look back, let alone apologise. Rude brick. A few paces later, they found Angelo and Lucas in one of the interview rooms. The desk had been covered by a thin, rollout mattress and instead of sitting in the chairs, Angelo was lying on his side with an NYPD blanket rolled up as a pillow. At first, Robbie thought he was asleep, but as the door clicked shut, his blood-filled eyes cracked a fraction and his lips curled into a sleepy smirk. “Heyyyy, there you are,” he slurred, unable to keep his eyes open. Robbie frowned and he looked up at Lucas, who held his hands up in amusement. “I tried to stop him,” he said with an amused snort. “Stop who?” Daniel demanded. Lucas immediately dropped his hands and straightened where he sat at the head of Angelo’s makeshift bed. “The pain meds wore off a while back and a doctor just came in to readminister more. You must’ve passed him in the hallway…” “Nobody here knows about Trevino's injuries to his feet,” Daniel growled, and suddenly Robbie’s heart fell below his stomach. Lucas’ eyes widened in horror, but Robbie was already rushing to Angelo’s side. Daniel went to the wall and triggered an alarm of some kind that red lights flickering alongside the lights in the ceiling. Robbie grabbed Angelo’s head and reefed the makeshift pillow out from under him, laying him flat on his back. Bubbles of blood were already frothing on his parted lips and the bloody tears streaked down one side of his face. His eyes rolled back into his head and his body went into convulsions. “FUCK!” Lucas swore, sweeping in from the other side. “Rob! Roll him!” he commanded, already having Angelo’s hips and swinging them to one side to help try and clear his airway. Not that it would do any good. It was clear to anyone with eyes that Angelo had been poisoned and was dying right in front of them. Nothing was going to save him. Nothing … ... but a miracle. Robbie looked at Daniel, who was already on his way out the door to chase down the missing doctor. “Daniel!” he shouted, knowing of the two of them, the detective would be far more familiar with what needed to be done. But when Daniel refused to stop, Robbie made the only decision he thought he could. Taking the tefsla bracelet in one hand, he shifted the other thin enough to slip it over his wrist, barely wasting the time to appreciate the brightness of the colours that snapped back all around him. He placed that hand on the back of Angelo’s turned head. “Don’t you dare die on me, Angelo Trevino.” He had never wanted anything so much in his life. And it showed. * * * PART ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN Previous Part 165 ((All comments welcome)) I made a family tree/diagram of the Mystallian family that can be foundhere For more of my work including previous parts or WPs:Angel466 or indexed here FULL INDEX OF BOB THE HOBO TO DATE CAN BE FOUNDHERE!!

So, if you have already requested your ballot by mail, it is HIGHLY recommended that you wait for your ballot to be mailed to you, and then drop it off in person. If you have not registered to vote yet, please do so. THE VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, so please register to vote if you haven't done so yet. Please note that a witness signature is NOT required for this election. https://www.wric.com/news/politics/virginia-absentee-ballots-will-not-need-witness-signature-in-novembe For the Hampton Roads, and Virginia in general, the drop-box situation is quite patchwork. When drop-boxes were first announced, I thought there would be like one of these in every City and County: https://s3.reutersmedia.net/resources/?m=02&d=20200820&t=2&i=1530339454&r=LYNXMPEG7J0NJ&w=940 Upon doing more research, I realized that the drop-box situation, not just in Northern Virginia, but also across the commonwealth of Virginia inconsistent. Some places have those types of drop boxes available (not necessarily that size, but like that kind of drop-box), and some don't. It all just varies. 2020.09.14 01:52 Jagrmeister_68Toll Violation -EZ Pass from May
So apparently my Mother received a letter from the State about an EZ Pass toll violation from 5/5/2020. It showed up in yesterday's mail. It's for the $1.50 Toll from the GSP N Union Toll Plaza with a $50 administrative fee attached. Now this was during the time that the tolls weren't accepting cash. She also does NOT have EZ Pass and they were suspending the ridiculous administrative fee until 5/19 when they put the cash tolls back into service. https://www.insidernj.com/cash-toll-suspended-parkway-turnpike-will-billed-mail/ What is the recommended recourse for this? Apparently she had another instance of this a few days prior to 5/5 and she received a letter about that and paid the toll via check with no added surcharge/fee. Also noted- the letter was dated 10 days ago, and has a pay by date of the end of this week because it took over a week to get it through the mail.

2020.08.29 13:32 snickeringhaystackI posted a true stalker story online. My stalker read it...
This is an update to a story I posted on a forum like this about 4 years ago. In fact, what happened was a direct result of me posting it. I’ve since taken it down, but I need to share what happened to me. God… Don’t worry about that first story; you’ll find that out as I tell this one. Let’s get started. So, a little about myself: I’m 41 years old and currently working as a salesman at a retail outlet that specializes in men’s business suits. The job makes pretty good money but with alimony to my ex-wife and child support on top of that, I seem to just barely get by. I had just finished going through the horror of divorce 6 months before this last incident happened. I had started drinking again. Drinking, and looking longingly at sleeping pill bottles and razor blades. I know what you’re thinking but I’ve always been too much of a coward for that sort of thing. Though I will admit it’s always seemed tempting, especially after losing everything like I did. Anyway, as you can imagine, I was feeling pretty low for a few weeks, so I was quite pleasantly surprised when this elegant, beautiful woman, about my age, came into the store and began to show me some interest. She was tall and slim, wearing a charcoal jacket and skirt combo, her hair discretely dyed bronze amber, and had a very unassuming smile, not too blemished by laugh lines or crow’s feet. I admit I’d noticed her before she approached me; I spotted her the moment she entered through the door. She seemed kind of familiar, but I wasn’t going to tell her that. That’s got be the most obvious non-pickup pickup line in the world, telling a strange woman she looks familiar. Anyway, she walked up to me with this coy smile, just showing a glimpse of perfect white teeth and said, “You probably think I’m in the wrong store.” I gave a little giggle, cleared my throat and said, “I’m sorry?” “This is a men’s clothing store, obviously,” she elaborated. Her eyes were deep brown – almost black – and they were lively and active, looking up into mine. “Well ma’am,” I said. “We do have some pant suits and some jackets for ladies if you’d like me to show you.” “Ma’am?” she remarked playfully. “Do I really look that old to you?” I chuckled nervously, breaking eye contact with her and clearing my throat again. God, I must have seemed like a schoolboy for Christ’s sake! I then told her not at all, that she didn’t look old but that I just wanted to be respectful. Her smile widened, her long purple fingernails fidgeting with her purse strap. “Well,” she said in a soft, heavy voice. “I’m actually here to find a suit for my son. He wants a tuxedo for prom.” I furrowed my brow. This was the dead of winter. Proms aren’t usually held until June or late May at the earliest. “I know,” she said, reading my look. “His school is impossible; they want to hold it early so that the students don’t get too distracted from their studies. My son’s also too busy playing his computer games to go get a suit himself and too embarrassed to come with me so, here I am.” I couldn’t help but grin eagerly. Just my luck, I thought. I showed her some of our more popular items. She told me her son’s size and together we found something she thought he’d like. The whole time she sided close to me and I could smell her floral perfume. It was soothing and, I’ll admit, I didn’t make any attempt to distance myself from her. As I was ringing her up at the cash till, I told her that if anything didn’t quite fit, she could bring it back in and we’d happily have it adjusted to fit her son’s measurements. She gave a low, almost inaudible laugh and told me that I probably didn’t have to worry about that. There were no other customers in the store then and the other cashier was on break, so we continued to chat. She asked me what I did in my spare time for fun and I hesitated, thinking of the rows of empty liquor bottles in my apartment and the sleeping pills next to the bathtub. Instead of answering her I jumped at the opportunity and asked her if she’d like to get a drink later that evening. She said nothing but tilted her head and scanned me with her sexy, roaming eyes. “When do you get off work?” she muttered softly. “At seven,” the words leapt from my mouth. “If that’s not too late for you.” “No,” she said, her pearly grin flashing at me over supple red lips. “That’s perfect. I know a bar around this area. I’ll be out front to pick you up.” “Great,” I said. “What’s your name again?” “Andrea.” “Andrea,” I repeated, extending my hand. “I’m Andy, nice to meet you.” “Naturally.” That seemed to put my nagging feeling of Déjà vu to rest; I had never known an Andrea – or met any Andreas for that matter. But the name was fitting, and I rolled each syllable over and over across my tongue, waiting for the hours of my shift and wilt away. By 6:30 we were locking up. Jane, the girl working there, was balancing the cash register while I wrote the day’s records in the books. As I wrote down the total debits and credits I could barely hold onto the pencil, I was so jittery. I know how pathetic this must sound but it had been a while since I had been with a woman in any way and, being older and just divorced, it was hard to build up the confidence to start dating again. By 7:00 it was dark out. Jane walked out and waved goodbye as I locked up the front door. At the curb in front of the sidewalk was a small blue station wagon, not very fancy but I wasn’t going to complain. I looked through the passenger side window and saw Andrea peering out at me, her hooded eyes meeting mine, that slight smile drawn across her face. I got in and immediately noticed how cold it was. There didn’t seem to be any heating at all, and the radio wasn’t even on. Strange, I thought. But maybe she lives close by. As she navigated out of the plaza and onto the road, I prattled on about the suit I had sold her and how most customers said they were really happy with it. She didn’t respond and wasn’t smiling anymore. I didn’t think too deep into it though. After all, she was driving. It’s important to keep concentration. The only thing that struck me as odd was that she had placed her purse on her lap while she was driving. Since I had had to sell my car after the divorce, I was very pleased to not have to ride the subway or bus, so I just eased back in my seat and enjoyed. I think that’s the reason that I didn’t notice that we had been on the road a long time despite her telling me this bar was close by. I knew something was up after she’d got onto a highway interchange. I looked at her very confused. “Did you say this bar was out of town?” I asked. She didn’t reply. Her eyes were glued to the road as we cruised up the ramp and onto the interstate. By now I was really getting nervous. I noticed she took her left hand from the steering wheel and began reaching inside her purse. “You really don’t remember me?” she said, her voice just louder than the car engine. I giggled a bit, but I didn’t find this funny at all. “I-I don’t know,” I stammered, looking at her. “You do look familiar but – I know I’ve never met an Andrea before.” I looked down at her lap – into her now opened purse – and felt my heart freeze in my chest: inside, the taped handle held in her delicate fingers, was a snub-nosed revolver. I squirmed in my seat, as if I was going to fly out from the window, the seatbelt digging into my neck. “What…what the hell are you doing?” I shouted between panted breaths. The gun was now out and pointed at me. “You probably don’t know any Andrea,” she said coldly, her voice empty – vacant. “But you might remember Alicia. Alicia Moretto.” Probably from the panic I felt staring down the barrel of that gun, the name didn’t ring any bells. She then looked at me, those bedroom eyes now burning like hot coals. she told me to open the glove box. “Open the glove box,” she muttered in a staid voice. “What?” I asked. “Open the glove box!” she screamed. I shuttered from the sharp change in her voice. I did as I was told. Gingerly, I stretched my shaking hand and pushed the lock button. The compartment door fell open and out spilled what had to be hundreds of pages of paper. They were all lying at my feet. She peered down in a quick glance and instructed me to read the stapled pages printed on red paper. I picked them up and immediately recognized what it was: my post of my stalker story to an Internet forum for true horror stories. I then figured out who she was: Alicia Moretto, the mentally disturbed girl who had stalked me at my workplace and at my home years ago when I was in my late teens. I pleaded with her and she just hollered at me to read it, her eyes back on the road but the revolver still trained on me. I did as she said. It was all there, my words: how she had come into the coffee shop where I worked, how her hair was constantly tangled and greasy, how her clothes were always in tatters, how she always smelled of BO and Vaseline. It was all there; how she had come in every morning, how she knew my schedule and when my shift was. How my coworkers had told me that she would sometimes come in on my days off and ask where I was. How one night I had found her waiting for me in my house. I tried to swallow but I couldn’t. I was trembling and the printed-out pages fell from my weak hands involuntarily. She peered over at me – I could see her from the corner of my eyes – and told me to pick up the next set of papers – the one printed on grey pages. I begged her again to just let me go and she screamed for me to read it. I picked them up, not recognizing any of the writing on it. Then I realized that these were comments people had written on my post of the story. Comments like, What a crazy bitch or I would have been so freaked by that cow or I’d have still hit it lol. Tears had started streaming down my face by the time I’d realized what this was. She had found my story, recognized it, and had come for me. “Please,” I said to her, choked up having read all the comments and realized her purpose. “I didn’t know it would upset you this much. I – I never used your real name.” “Do you think that matters?” her voice cracked. It was like an animal’s growl, all the prior sophistication and sensuality gone. “I knew. I knew that story was about me – about a time in my life I was ashamed of…” She trailed off. It sounded as though she had begun to sob. I looked at her and her mouth was hung open, as if in a silent scream, her eyes squinting closed. Yes, she too was crying. After a terrifying moment she gave a cough, tossed back her hair and was once again icily composed. I looked close and could just see smudges of mascara under her eyes. She then told me to reach inside her purse. I of course wasn’t about to do that. “I won’t shoot you if you do exactly as I say,” she then said in a calm but uneven voice. The voice smacked of the psychotic desperation of the girl who had stalked me those many years ago. I nodded my head slightly then quickly turned to glance out the window. It was now very dark and there were few other cars on the road. Careful not to brush up against the gun, I reached over and put my hand in her purse. Inside I found what felt like a set of Polaroids. My skin waxed cold, imagining that these were probably photos of me she had taken without my knowledge. I pulled them out and looked at them. They weren’t pictures of me at all. The first photograph was of a couple standing outside a wedding chapel, the woman smiling radiantly in a white lace gown, the handsome mustachioed man next to her wearing a black tuxedo and cummerbund. They were close and holding each other’s hands. I flipped through to the next photo to see the same couple kissing with their eyes closed, a sun setting above a glimmering ocean behind them. I flipped through and in the next photograph I saw the woman lying in a hospital bed, covered by dark green surgical sheets holding a newborn baby. The child was wrapped in a blanket, the husband standing beside them, smiling. I flipped through and saw a photo of the couple with two pre-teen children, sitting on a beach wearing jean shorts and bright colored shirts, smiling up into the camera’s POV. I then realized these photos were of her, the woman named Alicia. She had a family. Or had had a family. But…what did this have to do with my story? “I…I don’t understand,” I mumbled. She shot me a look out the corner of her eye and didn’t say anything. I looked out the window and saw there were no lights on the side of the road. Past the barrier there was nothing but tall trees and bleak wilderness. We were now far, far from any major city or town. I thought about reaching in my coat for my phone but knew that if I did, she might have shot me. Then I started wondering why she didn’t just kill me already if that was what she intended to do. The minutes felt like hours in that car. The darkness beyond the roadside seemed to stretch for an eternity like I had woken up in hell. Finally, after God knows how long, she spoke. “It took me ten years,” she said, her voice straining, quavering like that demented girl I remembered. “It took me three years to get over you. And another seven to forgive myself. I went to counseling, therapy. Eventually I agreed to take the medication. You see – I suffer from paranoid schizophrenia. It sort of runs in my family but it didn’t appear in me until about five months before I met you. My parents had gotten a divorce. Doctor Walton told me that’s what likely triggered my breakdown. Then, when I saw you, it was like you were there for me. My psychiatrist says I was using you as a misplaced source of love – love and security, which I felt had been torn away from me by my parent’s divorce. You were always there and always so polite, so I mistook your politeness and charm for love and affection.” At that moment, I don’t know why but I didn’t feel scared anymore. I just felt gloomy, depressed. We often call people crazy but when we actually hear the medical terms it becomes a lot less distant. She continued, “So for ten years after you, I avoided people. I didn’t see friends. I barely spoke to my parents and I absolutely never went out on dates. First, because I was still in love with you. And then because I was so ashamed. Ashamed and afraid I would become that super attached psychopath that I had been with you. I wanted so many times to contact you and to apologize but my counselor and Doctor Walton were adamant that that would be a bad idea. They said it would cause me to relapse. “So, for ten years I was alone, hating myself. Then I met David. David was a graduate student in university studying Physical Geography. He had approached me first. We met at a bar, or restaurant actually. My parents had insisted on taking me out for my birthday and he’d asked the waiter to put our bill on his tab.” She then gave a sorrowful laugh, a tear falling down her cheek. “He barely had enough money to pay for his beer and he wanted to pay for a whole family’s meal just to speak with me. “We started out just as friends and then with his insistence we became more than that. I loved him and felt so much better. I finally felt well enough to go back to school and complete my degree. We got married shortly after he graduated. He’d been hired on at a consulting firm, so we were mostly stable. I finally forgave myself and forgot all about you. But I never told him. Never. “A year into our marriage we had Aaron and two years later Cassandra. We were both so happy. I was happy. I got a job as a typist at a Law Firm. It wasn’t much but it gave me something to do after the children were old enough to go to school. I liked working there; everyone was so friendly and helpful. “One day, Mark, one of the support staff members in Facilities was showing me this website he often goes to, mostly to look up funny pictures. He told me about this page that has scary stories and creepy encounters and I immediately recognized what most of the stories were about. I searched all the posts and it didn’t take me long to find one that was familiar. Too familiar. I knew that it was you who posted it.” She then stopped and let out a heavy sigh, her moist eyes rolling up and looking long at the car roof. It was as though she could not believe she was telling me this. Her voice had stopped sounding like a nervous psychotic and more like that of a sobbing, distraught woman. The gloom lingered thick inside the car – over both of us. “After that my paranoia and anxiety spiked,” she continued. “I tried to fight it by upping the dose of my medication but that didn’t work. Pretty soon I just stopped since they only seemed to make me drowsy.” She then gave another humorless little laugh as though she’d caught herself in a lie. “You know, I thought it was because David had seen the post that he left me and why I couldn’t get even joint custody of the children but that’s not true. The truth is, seeing your post made me act erratic. I started throwing fits, fighting with him for no reason, shouting at the children and beating them over things that weren’t their fault. I had stopped sleeping at night, believing the next-door neighbors were spying on us and plotting to come in and steal everything. It was because of me that David left me, and I acted that way because of your post.” I was now staring out the window. I could just make out open fields in the distance with the slightest smattering of brush. Where the hell was she taking me? “I couldn’t forgive myself,” she said. “I know now that I never will.” I gulped and asked, “How did you find me?” She smiled maliciously in my direction, amused by my discomfort. “One of the criminal lawyers at my firm, Mike Corson, has a team of Private Investigators. I do paperwork for him, so I forged a memo asking one of the PI’s to find your whereabouts. It didn’t take long; I knew your full name, where you had once worked and where you grew up. I was of course surprised you still lived there after all these years.” Her smile was now spiteful and mocking. That and her last comment made me look away, slightly incensed. “Of course, when Mike found out about it I was fired. Misappropriate of the firm’s resources. It didn’t help I was already on thin ice – for obvious reasons.” The road we had driven on had disintegrated into a rough, jagged path of scrappy concrete. It was as though we had gone back in time to when there was nothing but dirt and jungle. I actually started worrying that if we drove any longer that that road would stop, or we’d be stranded in desert. I looked at the clock on the dash and the green numbers revealed 12:03. We had been driving for hours. Another hour passed with nothing. Just silence. I started absorbing what she’d told me and felt this weight form in the pit of my stomach. I had caused this. I had ruined her life. And for what? A little bit of attention on an online forum? Jesus, the episode hadn’t been that much of my life and, for God sake, she was schizophrenic. The whole damn thing now seemed sleazy and – and I no longer felt scared. I wasn’t frightened at all. I just wanted this to end. By 1:15 she slowed down the car. We pulled over, parking on a gravel shoulder by a vast, empty field, the car pointed away and perpendicular to the road. When she switched off her headlights it went all black beyond the windshield. My eyes adjusted and I could just make out the black shape of the field beneath the lighter shade of the starless night sky. We both sat there, not looking at each other, like we had just fucked for money. She didn’t move, didn’t stir. The revolver still trained on me. “I’m sorry,” I said. My voice was contrite and damp. “I know that what I did was wrong. When I met you, it was at a moment when you were most vulnerable and it was wrong for me to take advantage, even years later.” She didn’t look at me, didn’t move. But I knew she heard me. “Go ahead,” I then said to her. “Kill me. I deserve to be hurt. I deserve to die. I – I don’t want to live anymore.” Just then, she straitened in her seat, still staring out into the field before us. “No,” she said, huskily. “You deserve to feel what I feel every day.” I then heard the hammer click backward and watched as she opened her perfect mouth and stuck the barrel into it. I shouted and lunged toward her but-- BANG! There was a flash and I saw spots. My ears were ringing and blocked like I was under water. After about a minute my eyes adjusted. Then I started, stupidly surprised, by the sight of the woman’s mutilated face resting next to me in the car. The interior was splattered with blood. My hand groped endlessly for the door handle, finally finding it, and I fell out onto the pebbled ground from the passenger side. I got on my hands and knees and puked my guts out. After I stood up, I doubled over and dry heaved for several minutes. From there I walked the shoulder, not thumbing, not trying to get home, just trying to get as far away from Andrea – Alicia as I could. Eventually, by daybreak, someone driving a rusted pickup pulled over and asked me if I needed a lift. Still shaken and exhausted I approached his passenger-side window. Once I was a foot away from his truck, I saw his face drain pale, his pupils shrink in the sockets and in one hyper-movement, he grabbed the gearstick, put it into drive and sped off. I stared at the fleeing vehicle confused, then looked down at my clothes. I was, of course, covered with blood. I took off my jacket and shirt, wiped my face with them, then tossed them, continuing the rest of the way in just my undershirt and slacks. About two hours later, someone picked me up and drove me as far as the next major city. From there I took a bus home and called in sick to work. UPDATE About a week after the incident, two detectives came to see me at my home. They asked me about my relationship to the deceased, Alicia Moretto-Lippmann, and I told them the whole story. They informed me that they had found Google map printouts of my address and a P.I. file of my name at the scene. They tried to get me to go downtown with them, but I refused and called a lawyer. My new lawyer, Mister Michael Corson, who agreed to represent me Pro Bono, told me there’s no chance of a charge of murder being brought against me. The evidence of possible foul play is pretty thin; my story, although incredible, makes enough sense; and the police are happy to write off her death as a suicide rather than spend endless man-hours and OT investigating a homicide. Corson recommended me to a better matrimonial lawyer, and I got my alimony reduced and received more time to see my kids. I also entered AA where I have started to get over my self-destructive thoughts and behavior. Don’t get me wrong. I feel horrible about what happened to Alicia. And her last words do stick with me.
