Yes I would love to spread awareness of their disgusting and predatory practices. Thanks for asking. JWs have to report field service time every month. One way they do it (especially if elderly or during inclement weather) a group get together. They read the obituaries and look up the survivors’ addresses. Then they send the survivors a form letter and a tract.
I was forced to join one of these letter writing parties. I went through the motions of writing the distasteful letters but never mailed them. Some n my congregation also hung out at cemeteries and approached visitors with their magazines or tracts.

I didn't even have to take my clothes off when they came to my door. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but they asked me "Do you believe the bible is relevant for today," (no greeting, no introduction.) I said "Which Bible?" They said "Any bible." I said, "The real Bible is still relevant for today but not the bastardized version Jehovah's Witnesses use to control their members." And they literally gasped and left. It kind of confused me, because I was calm and while that's not a very nice response, it's not like I was naked or Satanic or something. I don't know, maybe they were just super sensitive?

The last time the JWs showed up was the day my new puppy went to her first obedience class. It had been muddy, so she'd gone straight into the tub for a rinse. We'd just finished when the JWs knocked.
When an untrained cocker spaniel meets new people, there's only one thing that's going to happen: she popped right up for head scritches and left wet pawprints on their knees. That was over 20 years ago and they haven't been back.

It's worth also learning what your city laws are for door to door soliciting.
In my city, all salesman are legally required to have a permit and badge. They are also legally required to honor no soliciting signs. If I ever open the door for a solicitor I ask "please show me your solicitation permit." Usually they'll turn around and walk away immediately as they rarely have one. This can result in hefty fines if their business is reported. And will result in a loss of their permit if they have one and ignore no soliciting signs.

Haven't seen a JW in a long time, knock on wood. Back when I was young and naive I made the mistake of letting one in once and trying to reason with her. She hounded me for weeks after. Lesson learned. These days it is mostly people trying to sell me aluminum siding or lawn chemicals or other bullshit I don't need.

I've never had that either. What kind of neighborhood do you live in? I think they tend to not serve anything other than suburbs door-to-door. If it looks even remotely sketch(broken down cars, chainlink fencing with boards in some places, wood that doesn't look taken care of) they will tend to avoid those places.

We had Jehovah's witnesses come knocking on our door on CHRISTMAS FRICKING EVE at ungodly hours, and they kept ringing our door bell for like 15 minutes, waking our dog up who started barking at them, finally turning them away.

This is typical JW behavior, at least from my own experience. They have no boundaries or manners. They have no social skills and do not respect anyone’s privacy. My husband sees nothing wrong with bothering people while they’re shopping or filling their cars with gas. Yet he gets angry when we go to Sam’s club and are approached by the home improvement, wireless and solar sales people. We’ve gone on walks in our neighborhood and he approaches people with personal questions, then launches into his JW spiel. It’s cringey. I don’t want my neighbors to think I’m a JW.
We have to take back our power. Because they have no manners we have to be the ones to end the conversations and tell them to not come back. Sometimes we have to threaten them with calling the police. We would do it for other salespeople. We have to do it with them else they will keep returning. Do not let them have their self perceived exalted status.

I totally understand their sense of urgency. I was raised very religious so that I understand.
What really gets me is ministering to people like that isn't about the person they (not only JW's there are other denominations that can get pretty aggressive) are trying to save from hell. It ends up being about them and that's the part that really bothers me.
In the situation in my driveway, it wasn't about my comfort, the fact that I was being asked very invasive questions in front of my kids and they weren't being respectful to me. What if it were true? What if I was disfellowshiped over something really horrible? Do you honestly think I would feel comfortable discussing that in front of young children? In that moment, me being 'saved' by them wasn't their priority. The priority was them and how THEY are doing gods work. In that respect, being so pushy about it is ultimately selfish. And even though I don't go to church, it doesn't mean I am not going to be a bad example to my kids and tell a couple of church people to fuck off, and it always seems like that's what they are goading me into doing which feels so wrong. Like 'we're just trying to save her, and she is persecuting us because of our Faith'. Yes, Jesus said to minister to the world. He did not say be pushy then claim victim when people tell you to stop.

So many reasons! I knew I should have left the moment I started having doubts, but at the time, my boyfriend who I was secretly dating, said that not all congregations were like the one I was in and things would be different once we were married.
I was taught about their shunning policy before I was supposed to learn about it. When I asked about whether or not they shun, I was initially told that they don’t. I was pressured to shun my never JW kids, especially because they were serving in the military.
I learned about case study 29 of the Australian Royal Commission. The Jehovah’s Witnesses covered up thousands of pedophilia cases. They have a Two Witness Rule that elders follow in their “secret” elders handbook, Shepherd the Flock of God that enables them to cover up child sexual abuse. They have punished those who’ve reported the assaults to the police. Rape victims have been disfellowshipped for “pornea.”
This is just a few of the many things that are wrong with this high control religion. If you’re curious check out JWFACTS.com or exjw.

i think it depends on where you are. about 5-10 years ago, girl scouts (and other kids selling things, usually sally foster or the cookie dough) went door to door, usually supervised sometimes not. somewhere along the way parents decided doing that was too dangerous and now set up shop outside stores

I’m so sorry. I’m a former Jehovah’s Witness and my congregation pressured us to knock on doors during holidays because it was the best chance of finding people home. Then they reveled in their persecution complex because (surprise surprise) no one wanted to be bothered. Personally I thought it was disgusting and rude but I had to go along else I’d be marked.

My boyfriend is a bit of a scruffy looking guy, long curly hair, beard, etc. One time when some Jehovah's Witnesses came by, he answered the door in nothing but his boxers. They legit didn't come back for a few years, I think he scared them.
My dad had one of those evolution fish bumper stickers on his car in the driveway. That deterred some too, and if it didn't, he just politely pointed it out to them and sent them away.

There used to be this pair of JW's (older lady and younger-ish guy) that would show up at my house every single week. She was super nice but I had told her basically from the get go that I had experienced a tremendous amount of church hurt(non LDS church but whatever), that my faith was my own for the time being, and was not interested in returning to organized religion anytime soon and that I needed some space. She did not take the hint.
A few more months of this lady showing up at random times of the day and I get really frustrated so I looked up the JW term for being ostracized so that she would leave me alone and the next time she showed up at my house I told her I was disfellowshiped and again that I was not interested.
A couple days later, she and this new guy who apparently was some higher up in the church show up at my house and corner me in my driveway. This guy pulls a little notepad out of his pocket and a pen (no joke the same kind you see cops pull from a pocket in detective movie) and start grilling me about my supposed disfellowship, what church, who was involved, what happened, when was this, where was this, I mean, this was in front of my kids who are really little. I was completely taken aback. I had to find the kindest way to politely tell them to buzz off and not to bother us again.
I get the sense of urgency with them that you don't want someone to go to hell, but at what point do you look at yourself and maybe say 'im not respecting this person's privacy or wishes' and maybe leave them alone? I feel bad for being forced to lie to them. That certainly doesn't feel good, but I'm also angry that they tried to grill me in front of my kids.
I haven't seen anyone in quite a while so I'm assuming they just put a Scarlet letter on my house and moved on.

I spent over a year conversing with a JW when I was a fundamentalist Christian. My husband and I invited her in (she was always with someone, but never the same person twice.) I was naive and just coming at things from a point of what the original Ancient Hebrew and Septuagint verses really meant, and eventually she had someone visiting who was high up in their organization and I still out-debated him from a biblical perspective. I did 4 years at a Christian university, studying the Bible in depth with really knowledgable professors.
I was like, the most nerdy, obsessive, overly educated Bible geek.
But what I got out of it when it was all said and done, was that this woman loved her father more than anything else in her life. He was a great dad, an inspiration, someone who made her who she was, yet she had to cut him out of her life because he wasn't a JW. She hurt for him every day and was in pain, and cried when she talked about him, but used that to prove her point that you have to sacrifice to do Jehovah's will. It really made me wonder why anyone would want to be a part of an organization that causes families that kind of pain. It's unbiblical and unhealthy.

I gave them a reasoned argument once for why it's wrong to attempt to predict the hour or the day and they looked at me like I had grown seven heads. Wasn't nasty about it or anything. Slamming the door in their face or telling them you're Catholic/a satanist (much of a muchness in a lot of their eyes) may be satisfying in the moment but a worldly person with a biblically sourced opinion can be a bit harder to shake off if they're wavering. It probably made zero difference and they've 90% gone over to the carts here now, but honestly I felt better about the whole thing afterwards. The cart people don't approach me, the local Kingdom Hall must not have a wheelchair ramp or something.
Seriously though, people need to start seeing it for what it is - a high control death cult. They may be a door-knocking meme to most but they're mainly victims of a horrendous organisation that is literally celebrating the deaths of children. I'd rather have the double glazing lads try to sell me shit three times a week than they continue to peddle their apocalyptic nonsense and I already have double glazing. I wish shouting at them worked, I'm argumentative as they come, but it just feeds the persecution complex. I wish they'd all give up when it's obvious whatever ridiculous extension they've given their end of the world predictions is proven wrong, but a large number will just swallow whatever the governing body tells them. I wish everyone knew what they think will happen to those of us with the wrong beliefs when Jesus returns, but they don't mention the burning painful death upfront. Seriously fuck the people at the top who indoctrinated the rest knowing all the ill they were doing to the world. Fuck them sideways.

I was just thinking about this the other day as a potential response to someone messaging me and trying to sell me something. I would tell them I find it completely inappropriate for door-to-door sellers these days as they are coming to my house, my private and personal space and it feels very intrusive, especially as a female so I don’t even answer the door if I can help it. I’m not going to answer to ppl using my personal social media to sell me crap either.
Edit: omg 2 minutes after I wrote this, I saw a man walking up to my door and said, “oh sh!t” thinking it was a salesman...luckily it was just the amazon delivery guy...got me paranoid now! 🤣

Does god not punish child molesters or something? What the fuck.
Not sure if you might be in therapy at all from the brainwashing but I wish you luck in life!
I briefly met an ex-JW while getting mental treatment and it broke my heart that she was basically exiled from everything she knew because she wanted to divorce her abusive husband. She had nothing and was demonized to her kids and everybody she knew, because she didn't know anybody who wasn't a JW. It was why she attempted suicide in the first place, and it took her a while to feel "free" because she missed her kids so much. It was so cruel, I don't know how a "good" person could treat somebody that way. :(

I'm sure the Org thanks him. The reason JW's go to your door isn't to recruit your boyfriend, it's to prove to the JW's that non-believers are controlled by Satan. Now they can go back to their safe Kingdom Hall and be grateful to be with safe, good people. It's a control tactic cults use to keep their people in.

Gated community and sub division. My kids dad lives in a neighborhood of nothing but cul-de-sac and he gets a good amount of door to door kids selling things. Parents or big brothers/sisters tend to go with them.

Do MLMs go door to door anymore? I know Amway did in the 80's and 90's a bit, but it seems like there strategy was to always make it more of a personal connection rather than a doorstep pitch.

As a former Jehovah’s Witness I can attest to this. I was in field service with a car group, and when I pointed out a “no soliciting” sign at an apartment complex, the elder in charge of us told us to ignore it because we weren’t selling anything. We were “saving lives.”
Even after a manager told us to leave, the elder had us split up and told us to sneak into the buildings. Management threatened us with the police after that. We stopped but the elder said he knew Jehovah was smiling down on us for the persecution we were experiencing.
They also made us knock on doors during holidays. Don’t get me started on the letter writing parties to survivors found in obituaries.

I used to get Jehovah's Witnesses by the house once or twice every week. I had a no soliciting sign, SUPER annoying since about half the time they were waking me up after I had just gone to bed (I basically work 3rd shift). I would answer in boxers all the time, made no nevermind to them.
I got absolutely sick of it, warned them I was going to start not bothering to throw on clothes when I answered the door. Next time they showed up, I answered completely starkers. They didn't bother me for months. They came back again after they forgot about it, I answered in my birthday suit again.
I haven't had them knock on my door again in almost 9 years now.

Where do you live that girlscouts go door-to-door selling cookies? In my 30 years on this planet, I have never once had a girl scout ring our doorbell and sell us cookies. They've always been hanging out in front of grocery stores

Geoff appreciation thread
Thanks!
Overwatch is certainly a challenging game to both tune and continually add new/interesting content. When I think back to how the game was in beta, or even launch, I feel like we’ve come a long way since then. Remember, there was a time when McCree’s fan the hammer did full damage per bullet, Zenyatta had 150 health, Pharah’s Conc Blast did 700 damage to shields/barriers (poor Zen…), Reinhardt’s charge had no “wind up”, it would just come out instantly and pin/kill anyone in front of him.
That said we’re committed to continue to update and tune the game. Although there will always be some changes that will not be popular with some players, know that the the goal is always to keep every hero unique and powerful for everyone.
While I’m here i might as well clear up a couple minor misconceptions I see occasionally about my history at Blizzard. Previous to the Overwatch team I worked on World of Warcraft as an encounter designer. I made a ton of different content from dungeons like Shadowfang Keep, Deadmines, and Gnomeregan, to raid encounters like Onyxia, Blackwing Lair, C’Thun and Lich King. From there I moved directly onto Titan which eventually became Overwatch. While I have great respect for the designers over on the the Heroes of the Storm team, I never worked on that project other than occasionally sending feedback or talking to various designers over lunch etc.
Geoff, what do you think was the most overpowered balance change the team has made?
I’d say at this point its pretty clear Brigitte’s initial balance was pretty far off the mark. She has been nerfed multiple times since then and she is still very strong.
Another regret is although I really like the way Hanzo has turned out, I somewhat regret increasing his projectile speed specifically. It will always feel great when testing a change like that, and it has helped make him a lot more consistent… but he has lost some of what helped make him feel very different than other heroes. That’s not to say you’re going to see Hanzo nerfed next patch or something, but its just one of those retrospect things that I wonder if there was another way to get to the same goal.
Speaking of balance Geoff, what heroes are on you and your team’s radar for changes in the next few PTR cycles [Post-Baptiste hitting live]? Or at least who are you guys planning on changing?
We’re mostly going to see how this next patch shakes out, since it has a ton of changes in it already.
That said, we would have liked to keep the Junkrat buff at 140 from a pure DPS stand-point (especially against Tanks/Barriers), but it was just really pushing it once he could one-shot 200 health heroes with a 50%+ boost (Orisa ult, Nano, Baptiste ult, etc). We experimented with making the grenades no longer explode on enemy impact once they hit a surface (as a way to nerf his spam, without affecting direct hits) but it felt really weird and kind of broken in a lot of cases.
So possibly Junkrat buffs and some different Reaper buffs, since the pure passive healing buff was really problematic at the lower ranks.
Out of interest, what are some mechanics currently absent from Overwatch that you’d like to see added/are campaigning to have added?
We have a ton of unused ability and weapon prototypes sitting around. They’re generally either something we’ve tried on a hero in the past and didn’t like, or something we did like but didn’t feel like it fit right on the hero we were testing.
Some examples off the top of my head:
Bomblet Gun: We had this gun where the projectiles would stick into enemies, but the impact damage was pretty low. The alternate fire had a fairly long animation time but would remotely detonate all the little bombs you stuck into all your targets. It was pretty fun but we just need the right hero for it to work with (it was really fun playing around with it on Tracer!).
Invis Wall: This was originally on Sombra i think? The idea is you plant this wall that made it so enemies couldn’t see you though it, but you and your allies could see just fine. It didn’t block bullets like a barrier, it was just for hiding while running past a choke or just throwing into the middle of a fight. It was pretty scary to fight against when all these projectiles were just magically coming out of the thing but you couldn’t see who or where they were being fired from. It was like a high-tech smoke bomb, kind of.
I always thought it would be cool to try to do some sort of “tunneling” effect, where you could maybe temporarily destroy or remove a small part of a level to move or shoot through.
Honestly it’ll probably never happen due to immense tech issues, but it always seemed like it could be cool to see.
But I was wondering, would you guys ever consider buffing her HPS up to 55 to see if it works as a nice middleground? It could be the extra “oomph” some Mercy players miss about her healing. Or also, would you ever consider giving her an ability on her Reload button for her staff which temporarily boosts her healing output?
I think that’s certainly possible. Overall her healing output is still higher than the other healers, which she pays for by not being able to split focus and do other things while healing. I’d also love to be able to increase the power of her damage boosting, but it causes a lot of issues with various breakpoints where suddenly X hero can one-shot 200 health heroes etc. There are other ways to make it feel better without just adding raw damage though, we’ll see.
One huge thing that sits in Sym main’s minds is the teleporter. Are you looking at buffing it / making it more consistent? Bonus question: Ever thinking about returning shielding (blue HP providing) to Sym in some form?
I actually looked into the railings stuff with Symm/Reaper ground targeting and worked on it for a while last week. It turns out its a bit more complicated and is going to require some code changes to try to change it, but i’m hoping we can get something in next patch if it goes well in play testing.
As far as the teleport build speed… maybe. I totally get the thing where you go to try to make the clutch save and the build time is so long that they die anyway, but the concern is we need to make sure we don’t just give your whole team nearly instant teleportation across a huge area. If we’re not careful it could really make all chokes not even worth trying to defend etc. That said it something we could try and play test with and see how it goes.
(Unsure if correct reply) Echo has wings :eyes:
Hmm… you’re right…

2018.09.30 00:29 hipstertuna22 I had a group script writing class where we needed to write a story in a place we haven’t been. For people who actually live in Vancouver, how realistic is the references in this?

SNACK QUEST By u/hipstertuna22 and 3 more people
Plot: Two Vancouver hippies are looking for snacks.
Characters:
Ash Hargreaves: A freshly graduated 22-year old from University of British Columbia. It’s important to note that he’s not a hippie, unlike the next character...
Dan “The D.O.G” Tremblay: Ash’s roommate and buddy from UBC. Totally hippie. Moved from Los Angeles, still acts like an Angeleno (unlike Ash, which lived in Canada his whole life) He moved north for girls, less conservative laws, and beautiful landscapes (He says he moved for education but that’s just yaps)
Girl Guide: little Brownie girl. They’re called Girl Guides up here, you should get the message.
Girl Guide Leader: your average leader of a Girl Scout Guide troop. Assumably mom of GIRL GUIDE.
Rogue Monster: A beast that prevents Ash and Dan from getting their snacks always, from sell-outs to working for the US Border Patrol.
The scene is laid in Ash and Dan’s Kitsilano apartment. ASH and THE D.O.G are sitting on the couch. They’re both in casual, clothing. It’s the fall, and it’s time for cookie sales.
ASH: What’s up D.O.G?
THE D.O.G: Dude, I’m so hungry. I need some munchies bro.
(ASH walks to kitchen)
ASH: There’s only pop tarts.
THE D.O.G: Aw, seriously? Since the toaster exploded last week I can’t eat pop tarts! Can we go to Whole Foods?
ASH: Dan, you know we can’t get Whole Foods, we only got a few bucks on us.
THE D.O.G: Fine, I’ll just stay here, eh?
ASH: Whatever.
(THE D.O.G gets out a copy of the Vancouver Sun.)
THE D.O.G: Hey, the Girl Scouts are selling cookies at the Brentwood Town Centre for only 5 bucks a pop!
ASH: You mean Girl Guides?
THE D.O.G: Shut up Canadian.
ASH: (thinking) So if we get on to the train at Vancouver City Centre, take the Canada Line but then get off on Commercial-Broadway, transfer on the Millennium Line, get off on Brentwood Town Centre, that’ll only cost $8.40 for both of us, the cookies will be $5, the whole sha-bang will only take us around $25 bucks!
THE D.O.G: I’m sorry bruh, can you say that in normal-ese?
ASH: (sighs) We take the Skytrain.
THE D.O.G: That makes less sense.
ASH: Shut up Dan.
(Fast forward to ASH and THE D.O.G are on a Vancouver Skytrain on the Millennium Line. “Let’s Go To The Mall” from How I Met Your Mother can be heard in the background)
ASH: It’s very clear skies, eh?
THE D.O.G: Vancity wasn’t supposed to get this non-rainy, man.
(The train is approaching Rupert station, a weird, gigantic cyclop comes on the train)
THE D.O.G: Is it just me or there’s a cyclop dude over there, eh? ASH: You’re lying.
THE D.O.G: Ash the hell do you mean?
THE D.O.G: I’m not joking Ash, there’s a monster! (points to other side of train car)
ASH: That’s a nammer, ya racist jerk.
THE D.O.G: No, next to the nammer.
ASH: Oh crap D.O.G, I see it!
(ROGUE MONSTER approaches ASH and THE D.O.G)
ROGUE MONSTER: (speaks gibberish)
THE D.O.G: I’m sorry, I don’t speak Chi-
ASH: SHUT UP D.O.G!
RM: (yells in gibberish and intimidates the two.)
THE D.O.G: Don’t worry bro, this dude looks hella pins.
(THE D.O.G and RM start fighting)
THE D.O.G: (picks up pixel sword and slices RM in half)
RM: Don’t celebrate just yet, I’m gonna be back... (disappears into hundreds of quarters)
ASH: Hell yes! Warriors of Kits!
THE D.O.G: There can only be so much queens on the floor…Anyways, I can’t wait to get some thin mints!
ASH: Chocolatey Mints Dan, Chocolatey Mints.
THE D.O.G: I don’t speak your mystic language, please explain?
ASH: (sighs)
(Train approaches Brentwood Town Centre stop, ASH and THE D.O.G get off the train and walk to find where the Girl Guide sale is.)
(The sale is at the exit of the station and they approach the sale. GIRL GUIDE MOM is about to announce something to the girls.)
ASH: Ello!
GIRL GUIDE: (little girl voice to match little girl body, speaks fast too.) Hi, are you looking for cookies? We’re the BC Girl Guides, and we have a lot of them! Not only are they delicious but buying them helps support the Girl Guides! In other words, you can help me and my friends go on adventurous camping trips that will make me have the best life EVER! We hope you-
GIRL GUIDE LEADER: (whispers something to GIRL GUIDE)
THE D.O.G: I’ll get 2 boxes of-
GIRL GUIDE: We’re so sorry, we’re all sold out! We’re coming back next week at the Canada Place!
THE D.O.G: Huh?
GIRL GUIDE: I said we’re all out for today, sir.
THE D.O.G: (slightly angry) and when are they coming back?
GIRL GUIDE: Next week, Canada Place. What’s wrong?
THE D.O.G: Are there any other sales going on right now? I really need a snack.
GIRL GUIDE: (quietly asks GIRL GUIDE LEADER)
GIRL GUIDE: This is the only one happening in Vancouver. But there’s sales going on in Kyuquot, Kelowna, Kamloops, Nelson, Radium, Banff, and over the border in Bellingham. The States have different cookies than us, so we don’t recommend going to America.
THE D.O.G: (to ASH) Let’s go to Washington dude!
ASH: No way! Besides, your passport expired.
THE D.O.G: Well do you want to go to Kamloops? Nelson? CALGARY?
ASH: We’ll go somewhere else dude. Come on.
THE D.O.G: I can’t! We already paid for the train, you said it yourself! We have a low budget right now!
GIRL GUIDE: I’m sorry, can you please leave?
THE D.O.G: Fine.
(They walk away)
ASH: It’s alright dude.
(THE D.O.G begins to float away)
ASH: What is the D.O.G doing?
(THE D.O.G is now a face in the clouds)
THE D.O.G: Fellow friend…
ASH: What’s happened to you D.O.G?
THE D.O.G: I am not Dan Tremblay anymore, I am not The D.O.G anymore. I am The Almighty Snack Lord Tremblay.
ASH: (surprised) Woah.
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: And now I must do what is right.
(SNACK LORD TREMBLAY strikes lightning on the Girl Guides. They scream in agony.)
ASH: What have you done, Snack Lord Tremblay?
SL TREMBLAY: I have done what is right. For Vancouver. For British Columbia. For Canada. FOR THE WORLD.
ASH: What the hell man…. What are you talking about?
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: I am not in regret. Ash Hargreaves, you will find out later in life that my choices were essential. The future will be based on this strike of lightning.
ASH: (thinking)
ASH: You’re right. Thank you Snack Lord Tremblay.
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: You’re welcome. Now let’s get our bags, we’ve got some moving to do.
(An hour later, they now live in a mansion made out of food, on a cloud that is always above Vancouver.)
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: Kyuquot and Kelowna sales are over. Let’s go to the border. I like American cookies better, anyways.
ASH: Sure. But, people will see us!
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: (laughs)
(SNACK LORD TREMBLAY gets an armed flying Tron Bike out of thin air.)
SNACK LORD TREMBLAY: Hop on, dude.
(SNACK LORD TREMBLAY and ASH hop on the Volt Bike and starts driving at a speed of 500 km/h.)
(The two speed away from the US Border. They are now in Washington. But ROGUE MONSTER comes, and is way taller than ever before. He runs to detain the two. He grabs the two and takes them to their old Kitsilano apartment.) (Once in their old apartment, ASH checks the toaster.)
ASH: Huh, the toaster never exploded.

2018.05.20 23:13 wakeup_andlive 420 Reviews Part Two - Space Cake, OG Kush, Blue Dream - Xyrena

Here's Part Two of my 420 Reviews, three fragrances from Xyrena.
The post with videos, photos, and links is available here: http://enchantefragrance.com/420-reviews-part-two-space-cake-og-kush-blue-dream-xyrena/
In Part One, I reviewed Cannabis Flower from Demeter, Hungry Hungry Hippies from Smell Bent, and Black Afgano from Nasomatto.
Today I'm back with three marijuana fragrances from Xyrena's Reefer Madness Collection -- Space Cake, OG Kush, and Blue Dream. These fragrances were created by Xyrena founder and perfumer Killian Wells, and were released in 2017.
XYRENA FRAGRANCE HOUSE
Xyrena is a fascinating fragrance house in Los Angeles founded by the equally fascinating Killian Wells. Killian is a pop singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and perfumer. He owns Xuvo, an EDM-lifestyle brand that makes energy-drink cocktail mixers which are also blacklight-reactive. He got lip implants and posted a video on his Facebook page. He makes crazy youtube videos, like "Spring Staycation Log With My Ex-Boyfriend." [NSFW language]. He made this music video for the Xyrena Reefer Madness fragrance collection and his original song Blue Dream:
Killian Wells is also a legitimate perfumer, and campy genius. I love some of the Xyrena fragrances, and even though I don't wear them often, they are not just novelty scents, they are wearable perfumes. Two of my favorites are Andy Kaufman Milk & Cookies (smells like chocolate chip cookies and milk, and Cookie Crisp cereal) and Cinemaniac (smells like buttered popcorn, Twizzlers, and Coke -- true story, it makes me hungry to wear it).
In case you think Xyrena is just some schtick, check out this Exhibition from Somerset House in 2017, where Killian Wells was featured along with perfumers like Bertrand Duchaufour, Lyn Harris, Antoine Lie, and Andy Tauer. The Xyrena fragrance of Killian's that was featured is called Dark Ride. I haven't smelled it yet, but it's said to smell just like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.
4/20 MARIJUANA SCENT REVIEWS - PART TWO - REEFER MADNESS EDITION
SPACE CAKE FRAGRANCE REVIEW
Space Cake is a Sativa-dominant cannabis strain that is a cross between "Girl Scout Cookies" and "Snow Lotus". It's effects (according to the internet) are an elevating high from Snow Lotus, with the deep body buzz of Girl Scout Cookies. It's taste and smell, reportedly, is "spicy and sweet".
Space Cake, the fragrance, is described as "an olfactory trip to an Amsterdam coffee shop." Listed notes are cannabutter (salted butter, cannabis trimmings, earth, a slight skunk scent, and genuine cedar essential oil), yellow cake batter, baker’s yeast, french vanilla, benzoin resin, and buttercream frosting.
On first spray, Space Cake has a pungent zing that smells an awful lot like yellow mustard. I tried several applications, and got the same sense of it every time. I suppose this is supposed to be the cannabis smell. There is a sweetness underlying it, and an slight oiliness, and a tinge of that alcohol-and-sour-milk smell of active yeast.
Over time, the acidic/pungent note fades out, and it smells like a cross between vanilla cake batter and a plastic toy. It actually reminds me of these kinda creepy dolls from the 1990's that were cupcake-scented, and could be squished down into a plastic cupcake. The yeasty, sour milk smell was still there too.
Space Cake was the fragrance that I was most excited to try, because it sounded more like a gourmand. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought that I would, although I do enjoy plastic doll scents sometimes. The addition of the cannabis accord was just a strange juxtaposition that my nose and mind never completely reconciled. Maybe it would smell better to someone who likes the smell of cannabutter more than I do.
Safeness for work - 8/10. You won't smell like weed, but people might wonder what else you're up to. Like smuggling scented dolls. The fragrance is strong, and persistent.
OG KUSH FRAGRANCE REVIEW
OG Kush is one of the most legendary marijuana strains. It is very potent, has a very terpenic, piney smell, and an earthy, woody taste. It's smoke can be harsh and cough-inducing, and its cerebral high can lead to a phenomenon called "couch-lock" (you don't get up for hours, because you're so stoned that you feel like you melted into the couch). OG Kush has given rise to many other West Coast cannabis strains.
OG Kush, the fragrance, is described as "the world’s first parfum reproduction of the infamous West Coast strain." To make the scent as true-to-life as possible, Killian Wells combined synthetic fragrance oils with natural terpenes found in cannabis, including Limonene, Alpha Pinene, Caryophyllene, and Cedrene.
OG Kush opens with a blast of sour lemon and very terpenic pine. Underlying this, there is an earthiness and florality, and also a familiar mustiness. OG Kush smells a lot like weed.
As it dries down, a burnt-rubber note becomes more prominent, along with a soft, camphor-like smell. Along with the pine, it smells a bit like a cleaning product. After the first hour, the pine notes are mostly gone, the burnt rubber and camphor remains, and there is something dull and vaguely reminiscent of urine in the base. After two hours, it smells like an "industrial" hand soap, like something you'd find in an auto repair shop's bathroom.
Overall I think that this fragrance does a pretty good job of replicating many of the facets of the smell of OG Kush. It's not the most "marijuana smelling" scent I've ever encountered -- it doesn't really have any skunkiness. But it does have a lot of the same scent qualities as OG Kush.
Safeness for work - 6/10. There's no smell of marijuana smoke in this fragrance. It does smell similar to bud in the first hour. The average person on the streets will probably just think that you are a hardcore janitor wearing the industrial-strength version of Lemon Pine Sol, but connoisseurs of cannabis might say that you smell like K.G.B. (Killer Green Buds).
BLUE DREAM FRAGRANCE REVIEW
Blue Dream is another legendary West Coast Strain of cannabis. Forever immortalized by Juicy J's Mixtape "Blue Dream & Lean" (2011), Blue Dream is consistently one of the top selling strains of legal weed. A cross of Blueberry Indica and Sativa Haze, Blue Dream is said to produce a stable, calm, euphoric high that is good for both novice and veteran consumers. The one you break out when company is coming over, and you want everyone to enjoy themselves (but not get sloppy), Blue Dream is the Pinot Grigio of marijuana.
Particularly loved by women and people over 40, Blue Dream is said to be not too strong, but quite uplifting, helping with mood and creativity without decreasing productivity. Blue Dream cannabis smells like blueberries and sandalwood, or an herbal-berry sugar cookie, tastes like sweet berries, and is said to act as a bronchodilator.
The fragrance Blue Dream is described as "the world’s first parfum reproduction of arguably the most famous and popular marijuana strain." The formula for Blue Dream perfume combines synthetic fragrance oils with natural terpenes found in cannabis, including Alpha & Beta Pinene, Linalool, and Caryophyllene.
Blue Dream the fragrance is remarkable. The opening smells like tart blueberries, has a terpenic smell that reminds me of rosemary, and also has that familiar earthy and musty smell of weed, along with a tiny bit of skunk. While it's wet on your skin, this is just like sniffing a big hairy bud.
As it dries down, Blue Dream smells herbaceous, slightly grassy, mentholated, and has a little bit of peppery pungency. The tart blueberry smell persists, getting smoother and sweeter as time passes. The fragrance overall is balanced and uplifting, and although I think it smells the most like cannabis, it's also the one that I find the most wearable of the three.
Safeness for work - 5/10. Again, you won't smell like you've been smoking marijuana. But you will smell like nugz to those who partake regularly. Like Blue Dream weed, the fragrance is the real thing, but also uplifting, smooth, and mild enough to be inoffensive to most people.
FINAL THOUGHTS and XYRENA DETAILS
All three of these fragrances smelled just like their descriptions. I didn't get a lot of marijuana smell from Space Cake, but it was presented as more of a gourmand. OG Kush and Blue Dream smelled very much like their namesakes, but they are still fragrances. Close enough to be referential, but not exact, and that is the whole point of making fragrances "inspired by" something else. This is something that Xyrena does amazingly well.
I'm not entirely sure why people want to wear marijuana fragrances, but it's a popular note that's not going anywhere. I even got this scratch-and-sniff card that smells like weed in Issue 4 of Nez Magazine. Some of my favorite fragrances have a subtle cannabis accord that blends well with other scents, but I might be a little too square to wear straight-up bud-scented perfume like the Reefer Madness. They are impressive in their composition and similarity to the real thing though, and people who love the smell of pot will enjoy them.
Xyrena fragrances are all presented as extraits, and made-to-order. They are sold in 50mL bottles at varying prices, online only at this time. For more information, see xyrena.com. All of these fragrances had moderate sillage, and lasted for hours on my skin.

Shropshire Production company 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks Distributed by New Line Cinema Release dates April 21, 2000 Running time 124 minutes Country United States Language English Budget $20 million Box office $27,728,118 Love & Basketball is a 2000 American romantic drama film starring Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan. The film tells the story of Quincy McCall (Epps) and Monica Wright (Lathan), two next-door neighbors in Los Angeles, California who are pursuing their basketball careers before eventually falling for each other. The film was produced by 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, and marks the directing debut of screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Plot[edit] Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) have wanted to be professional basketball stars since they were kids. Monica wanted to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, and wear Magic Johnson's number: 32, and Quincy wanted to be like his father and play for the Clippers. However, Monica has to work hard to establish herself, while Quincy was born with natural star potential. As the two struggle to reach their goals of playing professionally, they must also deal with their emotions for each other. The film spans roughly thirteen years of friendship between childhood sweethearts Monica Wright and Quincy McCall. Monica and her family moved to Los Angeles in 1981 from Atlanta, Georgia, and quickly became acquainted with their new neighbors the McCalls, a wealthy family due to the success of Quincy's father Zeke, the star shooting guard for the San Diego Clippers. Quincy and Monica are drawn to each other instantly, sharing a love of the game basketball. Quincy is shocked that a girl could ever love basketball as much as he did, and he is even more shocked when Monica plays so well. Although their first interaction results in Quincy angrily knocking her down during game point and accidentally scarring her face, they share their first kiss on the first day of school and end the "first quarter" of the story fighting in the grass. The second quarter of the story begins in 1988, when both Monica and Quincy are the respective leaders of their high school teams. Scouts have taken clear notice of Quincy, who many see as one of the top prospects in the country. His popularity was not just evident on the court as he is extremely popular with the other students and could have any girl in school that he wanted, but he is still good friends and neighbors with Monica. Monica, on the other hand struggles with her fiery emotions on the court, which often resulted in technical fouls at critical moments of games, getting benched, and eventually pushing away many potential scouting opportunities due to her lack of control. Aside from her emotions on the court, she also struggles with the emotions she secretly still harbors for Quincy and struggles to express them as he is always surrounded by other girls. Monica also has problems with her mother Camille, a stay at home wife and mother; ever since she was a little girl Monica has been pressured by Camille to give up basketball and "act like a lady", to the point that Camille would force her to wear dresses and skirts against her will. This has continued into her high school years, with Camille still complaining that Monica is too much of a "tomboy" and needs to learn to be more feminine, which leaves Monica feeling hurt and resentful of her mother for not accepting her for who she is and refuses to embrace the domestic "house wife" work that her mother seems to enjoy so much. Through soul searching throughout the season, Monica learns to control her emotions and leads her team to the state championship game, but came up short leading them to a victory. She begins to recover from the loss with the help of her older sister Lena, who gives her a makeover and even finds a college friend to take her to her spring dance. With nothing more than a new hair style and a dress, Monica shows up to the spring dance looking as beautiful as ever. Despite having a date of his own, Quincy notices her and immediately walks over to her to compliment her new appearance but doesn't hesitate to comment on her date. They both show jealousy towards each others' dates and part ways. Later that night, they both speak outside her window and reveal to each other how their dates didn't meet their needs. She also lets him know that she has a letter from USC and insists on him to open it. After the letter reveals that she has been accepted, he finally vocalized that USC was also his choice. As they move in to congratulate each other with a hug, Monica mistakes the gesture as a kiss and that leads to them finally acting on their feelings for one another by making love to each other. It was Monica's first time. The third quarter of the story follows Quincy and Monica to their freshman year at USC in 1988-89, where they are managing themselves as athletes, students, and a couple. Again, the same problems seem to present themselves, this time on a bigger stage. While Quincy finds instant success on the court, as well as more and more female admirers, Monica struggles for playing time, being the backup to USC's senior guard, Sidra Oneal. To make matters worse, she falls on the bad side of the head coach, Ellie Davis. Her relationship with Quincy becomes more and more strained as Quincy struggles to deal with the media attention surrounding his father, who is trying to convince Quincy to finish college before going pro, and a paternity suit against him from a former lover. Quincy feels betrayed by his father for lying to him and threatens to leave school for the NBA early, despite his father begging him not to sacrifice his education just to spite him. When Monica finally earns the starting point guard spot at the end of the season, Quincy can't be happy for her because he blames her for not being there for him when he was having problems with his father. Monica is hurt deeply by Quincy, and the two go their separate ways. The fourth quarter of the story follows the characters through the early 1990s, a few years before the establishment of the WNBA, Monica's prospects for professional basketball lie exclusively in the IWBA, the International Women's Basketball Association, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. Monica settles into her new life in Barcelona, where she struggles to cope with the everyday grind of playing overseas away from family and friends. She misses home, but can't imagine a life that didn't include basketball. She tries to adapt to her surroundings as a local sports celebrity and the focal point of the team's offense. She leads her team to a dominant victory in the championship game at the end of the season. Despite all her personal success, she starts to realize her love for basketball isn't the same as it was before. Having left USC after his freshman season, Quincy is now in his fifth year in the pros, trying to find a role with his new team, the Los Angeles Lakers. The moment he finally finds some playing time, he injures himself landing awkwardly after a slam-dunk, and tearing his ACL. His family rushes to the hospital to be with him, but his now divorced parents still have bad blood when they see each other. Monica hears about Quincy's injury, and flies home to see him. Monica goes to the hospital to visit Quincy, and is stunned to hear of Quincy's engagement and to meet his fiancée (Tyra Banks). After her meeting with Quincy, Monica soon realizes that her feelings for him still exist. Monica also clashes with her mother Camille again over old resentments, causing Camille to remark that she had to give up her own dreams after having children and resenting Monica for not appreciating the sacrifices she made for her family, with Monica countering that Camille never made her feel loved or accepted because she kept trying to force her to give up her goals for a stereotypical "woman's role" in life that she didn't want. Over the next few months, Quincy undergoes rehabilitation while the day of his wedding draws closer. By this time, Monica has decided to give up basketball and work at a bank with her dad. When questioned by Quincy she states that it was no longer fun for her, Quincy does not understand, stating he never knew anyone who loved basketball as much as she did. After seeing how truly unhappy her daughter is without basketball or Quincy in her life, Camille finally relents and encourages Monica to fight for her dreams and the man she loves. Quincy and Monica meet up, this time as friends, and reminisce over their shared past. At this point, Quincy has recovered from his injury, and Monica finally steps up with an ultimatum. She challenges him to one final game on the court- but this time the stakes are higher: if he loses, he calls off the wedding and chooses Monica; if not, he marries his fiancée. Her reasoning is that the if he loses it would be because he let her win which would mean that deep down he really doesn't want to get married because he still loves her. Quincy agrees and beats her in the game, but can no longer be apart from Monica and chooses her. The phrase "double or nothing" brings a whole new meaning to the game. The film fast-forwards 2–3 years later in 1998. Monica has finally gone pro in the WNBA, which was created by the NBA in 1996. The movie ends with Quincy helping their baby daughter cheer on Monica during her game where the back of her jersey is seen with the name "Wright-McCall", showing that Monica and Quincy got married. (January 2013) Soundtrack[edit] Main article: Love & Basketball (soundtrack) Love & Basketball is the soundtrack to the film, released April 18, 2000, on Overbrook Entertainment and New Line Records.[2] Production for the album came from several recording artists, including Raphael Saadiq, Angie Stone, Zapp, and Steve "Silk" Hurley.[3] In the US, the album peaked at number 45 on the Billboard 200 and number 15 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.[4] Stacia Proefrock of Allmusic gave the album a three-of-five star review, saying "Songs like MeShell Ndege'ocello's 'Fool of Me' help punctuate this story of childhood friends who love each other almost as much as they love the game of basketball. Other highlights of the soundtrack include songs from MC Lyte, Al Green, and Rufus."[5] Release[edit] Love & Basketball was released in the United States on April 21, 2000.[6] Reception[edit] Reviews[edit] Love & Basketball received generally favorable reviews from film critics.[7] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 70, based on 28 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable".[7] At Rotten Tomatoes, which is similar to Metacritic, the film received an aggregated score of 82%, based on 87 reviews stating, "Confident directing and acting deliver an insightful look at young athletes."[8] Film reviewer Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave Love & Basketball an A- review.[9] She enjoyed how the film portrayed women's sports in general and says "The speed and wiliness of the game itself ensure that movies about men who shoot hoops are exciting, but the novelty of watching women bring their own physical grace to the contest is a turn-on."[9] Schwarzbaum also appreciated Prince-Bythewood's directing skills, claiming "[She] is also vigilant and honest about the hard sacrifices made in pursuit of sexual equality. And for that, she scores big in her first pro game."[9] Rachel Deahl of AllRovi gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars. In her review she complimented Epps and Lathan on their performances, and said, "Love & Basketball serves as a somber reminder of how few films exist (much less love stories, much less ones that focus on the female perspective) about multi-dimensional African-American characters outside the ghetto."[6] Film critic Desson Howe of The Washington Post's Entertainment Guide wrote, "Love and Basketball had moments of such tenderness and sophistication, complimented [sic] by such romantic dreaminess between lead performers Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan. First-time filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood's film joins such films as The Best Man and The Wood, which look for the class, not the crass, in African American life." Howe gave the film a favorable review.[10] New York Post film critic Jonathan Foreman gave the film a mixed review; he appreciated how the film "effectively conveys the excitement of basketball from a player's point of view", but says it's filled with fake-sounding dialogue you only find in the cheesiest TV movies."[11] Roger Ebert, film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times, says "The film is not as taut as it could have been, but I prefer its emotional perception to the pumped-up sports clichés I was sort of expecting. It's about the pressures of being a star athlete; the whole life, not the game highlights. I'm not sure I quite believe the final shot, though. I think the girl suits up for the sequel." Ebert gave the film three out of four stars.[12] Robert Wilonsky of the Dallas Observer gave the film a negative review, saying, "[it] is a film built upon transitions so weak and obvious it's astonishing the entire thing doesn't collapse on itself. You want to root for it, as you would any rookie underdog, but it offers nothing to cheer for."[13] He also elaborates on the acting, stating "Omar Epps possesses a chiseled body and a blank stare [...] Lathan is only slightly better, but she's stuck in a hollow role."[13] Box office[edit] Love & Basketball was released in North America on April 21, 2000 to 1,237 theaters.[14] It grossed $3,176,000 its first day and ending its North American weekend with $8,139,180, which was the second-highest grossing movie of the April 21–23, 2000 weekend, only behind U-571.[15] Love & Basketball grossed $27,459,615 in the United States, which is ninth all-time for a basketball film and thirty-seventh all-time for a sports drama.[14] The film grossed $27,728,118 worldwide; $268,503 (1%) was grossed outside of the United States.[14] Awards[edit] BET Awards Year Recipient/Nominated work Award Result 2001 Sanaa Lathan Best Actress Won[16] Black Reel Awards Year Recipient/Nominated work Award Result 2001 Love & Basketball Best Film Won[17] Love & Basketball Best Film Poster Won[17] Love & Basketball Best Soundtrack Won[17] Sanaa Lathan Theatrical – Best Actress Won[17] Gina Prince-Bythewood Theatrical – Best Director Won[17] "Fool of Me" (Meshell Ndegeocello) Best Song Won[17] Humanitas Prize Year Recipient/Nominated work Award Result 2000 Love & Basketball Sundance Film Category Won[18] Independent Spirit Awards Year Recipient/Nominated work Award Result 2000 Gina Prince-Bythewood Best First Screenplay Won[19] Key Art Awards Year Recipient/Nominated work Award Result 2001 D. 2016.02.10 01:10 avocadoxtoast To All The Women I've Ever Loved,

I. We were kids, but we kept shoeboxes under our beds and put all of our spare change in them. You and I dubbed them our "Get Out Of Town Money" because we swore we'd leave when we were both eighteen and go to Los Angeles. We sold Girl Scout Cookies and went to church because the other girls in our class did. I think we found each other because we didn't quite fit in with the others, but something stuck. We were so close that our teacher had to separate us. I have all these memories of you, good and bad, terrible and hilarious, that I often question because it's been so long. I know you saw me at Starbucks two weeks ago and pretended not to know. I want you to know that your iced, no ice, nonfat caramel macchiato is a weird, overpriced, lukewarm vanilla latte. It looks like neither of us got to Los Angeles, after all.
II. Sometimes your name stings like a fresh wound. Sometimes, in a rare moment that I forget that we "don't talk anymore", I'll think of something I want to tell you. It's been months, but there are some things that I never realized you and I did together that are weird when I'm alone. I look for you in grocery stores at weird hours. I frequent places we went together and wonder if I'll find some inkling that you were just there. I'm sorry I missed your birthday. I didn't really know what to say. I still have that cat horoscope book. It's weird talking about you in the past tense.

2016.01.29 01:01 cruyff8 How to pair wine with your favorite Girl Scout cookies

Summary generated by cruyff8's autosummarizer of http://www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-wine-girl-scout-cookies-20160128-story.html:
And even though the cookies can be pretty great crushed into milkshakes straight out of the freezer or eaten just about anywhere the folks at the Vivino wine app insist that if you want to take your cookies to the next level you need to pair them with wine. For a spicy wine that complements the chocolate try a Bandol Rouge made with at least Mourvedre grapes. Norris and Byrnes suggest a Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge. Cookies will be on sale at booths in Los Angeles between and March.

2012.08.01 04:33 jwescott425 In Los Angeles, the end is nigh. Dispensaries are going to be shut down in less than 30 days. Has anyone noticed any changes with their dispensaries?

The hand of Los Angeles' dispensary Doomsday clock is ticking down. The guys that I go to (won't say the name of the place, but it's in the San Fernando Valley) are so.. sad. That is the only way I can describe them. The mood at my dispensary has gone from laid-back and happy to.. sad. There is a cloud hanging over everyone's head.
I went in today to just pick up a gram of Girl Scout Cookies (my buddy keeps telling me how great it is blah blah) and before I can even push the button at the front door I get buzzed in. I fumble through my pockets trying to get my paperwork and I hear in a thick Armenian accent coming from the bar "just come in bro." Yup.. They aren't checking the online registry anymore. And it's not like it was because the guys knew me; I normally go on Friday nights when they have different budtenders working.
I don't know if they're trying to clear their inventory before the inevitable shutdown or what, but things seem to be rapidly disintegrating for them.. Which really REALLY sucks because they are easily one of the best places in the Valley.
Anybody other LA-ents notice odd behavior recently when going to their dispensaries? Has anyone asked the guys working what their thoughts/next course of action is going to be?
Oy. :(
