What were the reasons/factors for the rise in Japanese militarism (+other extreme ideologies) during the 1920s and 1930s which then culminated to the Second Sino-Japanese War and WW2?
2020.09.23 12:54 Laurence-EllisWhat were the reasons/factors for the rise in Japanese militarism (+other extreme ideologies) during the 1920s and 1930s which then culminated to the Second Sino-Japanese War and WW2?
The Empire of Japan is one of the three primary Axis Powers alongside Nazi Germany & Fascist Italy which fought against the Allies. Yet Japan's transformation into far-right authoritarianism contrasted with its co-Axis partners. The rise of fascist dictatorships Italy & then Germany was pretty clear-cut: fascist parties rose to power under a single supreme leader in midst of political, economic & social chaos; and both sought expansionism which then caused WW2. This seemingly does not occur exactly the same way in Japan in which there was no fascist party or a 'Hitler'/'Mussolini' figure. Rather, as far as I'm aware, the military grew in power and influence as such that it trumped & eventually took over the civilian government without a coup. This then also corresponded with the prominence other extreme ideologies like ultranationalism, State Shintoism, Showa Statism ("Japanese fascism"), and pro-expansionism in Asia, whether to 'liberate' Asia from West oand 'unify' it under Japanese rule. While I have a rough idea of what happened, I am struggling to gain a clear understanding as to how and why the situation in Japan during the Interwar and WW2 years occurred. Why did militarism - and other associated ideologies: ultra-nationalism, expansionism, State Shintoism and Showa Statism - gain traction in Japan that it eliminated the "Taisho Democracy"? Did these reasons go back as far to the Meiji Restoration? Why did 'process' start in the 1930s? Namely with the Manchurian Incident (1931) despite some of the factors - independence of military and nationalism - already existing decades before. Why, despite mulitple failed military coups in the early 1930s, did Japan eventually succumbed to a semi-fascist military dictatorship, seemingly by the civilian government under civilian Prime Minister Prince/Duke Konoe Fumimaro?

2020.09.05 01:13 blackdott44In the wake of the new Kamen Rider series, here's an introduction to the franchise for newcomers.
First off, if you are new to the series, welcome, happy to have you. Looking for a place to start? Well let me first tell you that the franchise is actually more simple than you think. First I'll give a brief history of the franchise but if you just want the recommendations, head to the last 5 paragraphs. Every series airs over the course of a year, and then moves on to the next. There are currently 30 series having aired, alongside a special, and 3 movies. The franchise is split onto 3 eras, each named after the Japanese Emperor at the time. The Showa Era aired from 1971 to 1989. There were 9 series during that era: Kamen Rider 1971 Kamen Rider V3 (1973) Kamen Rider X (1974) Kamen Rider Amazon (1974) Kamen Rider Stronger (1975) Skyrider (1979) (Officially simply called Kamen Rider as it was meant to be a reboot of the franchise) Kamen Rider Super-1 (1980) Kamen Rider Black, and it's sequel Kamen Rider Black RX (1987-1989) There was also the official special Kamen Rider ZX, as well as 3 movies: Shin: Kamen Rider Prolouge, Kamen Rider ZO, and Kamen Rider J. The Showa Era was primarily had this plot: A man with some sort of tragic backstory finds himself losing his humanity in the process to some evil orginization, government, cult, etc. They end up donning a bug themed suit and helmet with the power of a special belt called a Driver, and use martial arts to fight those aformentioned evil institutions in the name of justice. The series went into hiatus after Black RX, and the 3 movies came about in the early 90s. Years after the death of franchise creator Shotaro Ishinomori, Kamen Rider was revived into the Heisei Era. The Heisei Era aired in 2000 to 2019. The era is split into two: Heisei Phase 1 and Hesei Phase 2. Phase 1 ran from 2000 to the first half of 2009. The series here include: Kamen Rider Kuuga (2000) Kamen Rider Agito (2001) Kamen Rider Ryuki (2002) Kamen Rider 555 (pronounced Faiz) (2003) Kamen Rider Blade (2004) Kamen Rider Hibiki (2005) Kamen Rider Kabuto (2006 Kamen Rider Den-O (2007) Kamen Rider Kiva (2008) Kamen Rider Decade (First half of 2009) The Heisei Era was basically a massive turnaround for the franchise, now moving away from the aformentioned formula but keeping bits of it here and there. This helping to give each series it's own unique story. Decade ended in 31 episodes, instead of the usual 45+ episodes. Decade was also the 10th Heisei series, and as such was a massive celebration series where the Decade had the ability to turn into past Heisei Riders. Because of all of these issues, Decade and pre-Decade are often said within the fandom to be their own Era, though not officially. Heisei Phase 2 began in the latter half of 2009 and ending in 2018. The series used to always begin at the beginning of the year but as of 2009, it's now the middle of the year. From here, the franchise is a lot more gimmick-heavy (basically, literal plot devices that double as toys in real life are more than likely used for a lot of the abilites these riders have). Heisei Phase 2 includes: Kamen Rider W (Double) (Second half of 2009) Kamen Rider OOO (Os) (2010) Kamen Rider Fourze (4-Zay) (2011) Kamen Rider Wizard (2012) Kamen Rider Gaim (2013) Kamen Rider Drive (2014) Kamen Rider Ghost (2015) Kamen Rider Ex-Aid (2016) Kamen Rider Build (2017) Kamen Rider Zi-O (pronounced Jee-Oh) (2018) Much like Decade, Zi-O was the big anniversary, but this time it was also the final Heisei, so it naturally went out with a bang. We are currently in the Reiwa Era. These series include: Kamen Rider Zero-One (or 01) (2019) Kamen Rider Saber (2020, is not out at the time of this writing but will be this coming Sunday) Finally, there is a distant series called Kamen Rider Amazons. This one came out in 2016, and is basically an adults-only reboot of Kamen Rider Amazon (note the "s" in the former). It's bloody and gory, if you are a kid or have a weak stomach, do not watch. If you can stomach it, do so. I personally can't watch it because weak stomach. Now, for recommendations on where to start. I recommend what I like to call the simple trio: W, OOO, and Fourze. All of these have really creative premises, and are all very lighthearted and easy to watch. I recommend any one of these to first timers. W is about a wannabe hardboiled detective named Shotaro and his living wikipedia article partner Phillip, who run a detective agency in Fuuto City, usually solving cases on monsters called Dopants, who are humans who use these hard-drive like devices called GaiaMemories to transform. Thankfully, Shotaro and Phillip can do the same, placing 2 GaiaMemories of their own into a diver and becoming Kamen Rider Double. Basically, Phillip's soul goes into one half of Shotaro's body and controls one half of it while Shotaro controls the other. Kamen Rider OOO is about Eiji, a hobo who travels around the world, wanting to help people and do nothing but help people. He gets his chance to truly do so when a bunch of medals emerge and combine into ancient monsters called Greeed. Eini befriends one of them, who is reduced to a floating arm, named Ankh. Ankh gives him the O Driver and 3 Core Medals to transform into the legendary OOO, using the power of "desire" to fight of the Greeed, who turn humans into monsters called Yummies, to fulfill their desirable needs. Fourze is about Gentaro, a new kid at a high school, where insane shit happens from the word go. Gentaro wants to befriend everyone at the school, and this whole thing leads to him finding this abandoned locker, which is a portal to a base on the moon, which is ran by his classmates Kengo and Yuuki, who have possession of 40 Switches which contain "cosmic energy" and the Fourze Driver, which can control that cosmic energy. Even weirder things begin to happen when students, who more likely than not have a personal issue, start using switches of their own to become Constellation themed monsters called Zodiarts. Gentaro uses the Fourze Driver and becomes a space Kamen Rider, using these abilites and the power of friendship to stop his foes. And there we have it. Remember: those are just recommendations. You can start anywhere you want, though I heavily advise against starting with Decade, and Zi-O, since they spoil previous series. Have fun with this franchise, and remember: It's not Power Rangers

2020.07.12 04:38 Mirablis11Alatreon: The Good, the Mixed, and the Bad
With over ten Alatreon kills now under my belt and four weapons and his armor made and upgraded... I feel I can give a full opinion on the monster that's never had a stable mechanic system since Tri. The positives: ~Most of Alatreon's moves and the fight in general are really well designed. His attacks are flashy and imposing, while remaining for the most part fair and well telegraphed and damaging. You know when he's going to summon lightning, you know when he's doing his red ring of fireballs or his Icicle Crash or water spit and you know how to avoid them. The lines of lightning is probably my favorite of his new attacks, as it's VERY imposing, but well telegraphed, easy to avoid if you know what you are doing, and gives you a ripe opening to punish. The Dragon Claw, which was one of my least favorite attacks in Tri up to Gen U, is much easier to avoid now and not an instant "fuck you" swipe, thank god. ~The fact he not only uses all five elements, but is still elementally unstable and shows it. His opening cutscene is him unleashing all the fire because he can barely control it, and the (implied) reason for Escaton Judgement is him being unable to regulate his own energies until they finally burst out in one great blast, and you using the right element causes some of that to prematurely discharge, thus weakening when he finally lets loose. Him finally having water attacks is cool as well, since that was something he didn't have in prior games, even if the actual attacks aren't all that much, just him spitting water globs or reskins of his fire breath. ~The weapons all retain their original identity as decent raw, high sharpness and ALL the dragon element in the world they had in Tri and before. I know some people are disappointment Alatreon armor and weapons aren't meta-game defining or all these different elements, but we already have Kulve and Safi for that, plus it just wouldn't feel right to change what Alatreon weapons were beforehand. They're not THE best aside from the DB and LBG, but they're still solid choices for dragon weapons and all looking fancy. The Mixed: ~Alatreon got the Rathalos treatment with sound design, and... he sounds utterly alien and like an abomination, which is cool, but I miss the old Alatreon sounds, even if his main roar was just Teostra's. Not too big an issue, but when the Ghidorah noises come in when he does the fly up into downward fire breath or when knocked down, THAT gets distracting (The former being Ghidorah's showa cackle, and the latter being the noise the KOTM version does when firing his gravity bolts.) ~The armor skills could be better. The set bonuses ain't much to write home about, but the armor pieces themselves and what they come with aren't all that bad. the BETA giving you Attack 6... oh god, that is juicy, but I do wish they had either given him Awakening like in Tri, or Elemental Attack Up or Blight Resistance like in Gen, something more elemental related and benefitial than this weird not very strong conversion factor. The Bad: ~Escaton Judgement being a DPS elemental check is something that has been beaten to the ground and turned into ground beef all over this subreddit and elsewhere, so I won't even bother going over it, aside from the fact that apparently different weapons have different elemental thresholds they have to cross to trigger the weakening; For things like GS and Hammer, it's a lower threshold than the likes of DB and SnS, so it's not IMPOSSIBLE for those slower weapons to break it, but it's still not exactly something I'd like. ~I see the developers attended the 3U school of Alatreon, because you cannot trip him. In Tri, he could be tripped by breaking his legs. In 3U, even if you break the legs, no tripping, and in Gen and Gen U, he could be tripped, and here.... No breaking the legs, so no trips, which makes knocking him down and keeping him in place outside of KO's or mounts or passing the DPS check very difficult. At least he stays still half the time. ~While most of his moves are well designed and have workarounds, the fact he can combo out of the leapback fireball into the straight flamethrower INSTANTLY drives me up a wall to no end. I'm an IG main, I always have my orange buff so I don't get tripped or staggered (except lol no work in air because fuck IG), so when I get hit by the leapback fireball that seems to be aimed right on my head no matter where I roll, I instantly get up and get cooked for a guaranteed kill. The fact he can also just 180 no scope with the straight flamethrower just like MR Kulve is infuriating as well. ~Wanna know why you're probably failing your DPS check? Because you're spending too much time healing and applying Nulberries to actually do damage, or you and your partners are too busy being spread out and running around like lemmings with your heads cut off to keep up the elemental damage. Blight Resistance is your friend this fight, as you don't need to waste time gulping Nulberries to get rid of wateice/dragon blight. Safi armor is just one point away from full Blight Resistance, and while it may cost a slight dip in DEEPS, being able to just keep hitting and ignore blights is too much a godsend to ignore.
Here's the fourth chapter, hopefully the tone shift isn't too much for you guys. Again, feel free to leave comments and suggestions, I'm all for it. Thanks!! Also, the first chapter is uploaded on fanfiction and I made some changes to make it connect better with chapter 3, go check it out if you have the time!! There are almost no chatters between the crew as they perform their duties with their eyes focused on the task at hand, manning their stations and working perfectly in sync like a well-oiled clockwork under the waning sunlight and soft sea wind blowing behind their backs. After a few more minutes of silent cruising, the crew finally catch a glimpse of their destination. Joyous chatter started to fill the vessel with cries of relieve mixing in, some of the men even shed a tear and falls to their knees as they take in the scenery that marks the end of their arduous journey. Before them is a large cluster of archipelagos separated by crystal clear water, with the few medium sized ones linked by wooden bridges decorated with red gate-like structures that signify the crux of their religious belief. Every land mass, whether joined or separated are filled with a mix of concrete and wooden buildings layered together in an orderly yet artistic fashion, all of which are surrounded by the countless cherry blossoms that decorates the entirety of the archipelagos in a beautiful shade of pink , painting a perfect picture of the harmony between nature it’s citizen's ingenuity. The crewmen knew right then and there, they have finally returned to their home, to the Sakura Empire’s capitol. The cruiser sailed on, passing several of those beautiful archipelagos and getting showered by the falling peach petals as it drifts closer and closer to the largest one, where a hulking cherry blossom stands tall at its center. The great Sakura tree, as they call it, is several thousands of years old and its strong branches are so wide that they are blocking the light of the setting sun and casting a large shadow that covers the whole island, while the countless petals gives off a mystical pink hue that would mesmerize anyone who lays their eyes onto it. The crewmen themselves are also taken by the scene as they prepare to disembark while trying their best to stay clear of a lone figure standing at the edge of the vessel’s bow. “Takao to home port, we are making our return approach.” The figure said to her personal communicator as she eyes the beautiful landscape in front of her, smiling a little as she registers several KANSENs drifting along the shore with their cadet friends, enjoying their evening leave after school. “T-Takao-san!? I thought your patrol was scheduled to return tomorrow! W-What gives!?” A rather high and stuttering voice replied in surprise. “Calm down, Isuzu.” Takao answered with a small chuckle as she remembers how jumpy the Nagara-class cruiser can be. “Now, remember your training and try again.” “O-okay.....*ahem\* Welcome back to home port, Takao-san! Please state the reason for your early return from the border patrol!” “Thank you, Isuzu. We had some…. complications along the way. “Takao answered as she turns her gaze towards a small group of men huddled together, eager to disembark. She narrows her eyes in disgust before speaking back to the communicator. “Contact the medical staffs and call Mikasa-sama over. We should arrive in ten minutes.” “Wounded?.....u…understood! Please proceed to dock 4, we will have the maintenance team look at your vessel. Oh....uh, is Ayanami okay?” Takao could see the crewmen’s shoulders jump at the mention of their missing destroyer’s name. She chuckles a little before answering Isuzu with a smile on her face. “Ayanami broke her chain, Isuzu. She’s free.” -- Once the vessel reaches the dock, a small group of men quickly descends and made their way towards the welcoming party standing a few feet away from them. Most of them were injured and wears the look of fear in their eyes, save for one obese man who’s wearing a roughed-up Imperial naval officer’s attire that no longer fits his belly. The man has a large bump on his head and his lips are busted open, his eyes are bloodshot and fixed on the KANSEN that stands a few feet ahead of him as he stomps his way onward. “Welcome back to home port, shikikan-dono. I believe the border patrol went according to your expectations?” Mikasa asks the approaching man with a soft smile on her face, trying her best to remain calm as the other members of her welcoming party stars to panic and calls for medical attention for the men before her. “Like hell it did! Me and my men were assaulted by one of your rabid dog and a graduate from your academy ran from the battlefield like a coward!! Tell me, how do you intend to compensate for this, Mikasa-dono?!” The dock they were in was already filled with the welcoming party and maintenance crew’s chatters when Takao’s vessel docked with several men wounded. Now, with the decorated veteran’s loud and grievous accusations, even the pedestrian and passing KANSENs are joining in on the spectacle. “Oh my, that sounds really dreadful. I will see to it that your men are treated with utmost care.” Mikasa said as she nods her head and allow the medical team to go in and treat the wounded, she then shoots a gaze over to the cruiser docked behind the man with intrigue. “You mentioned a battlefield, did you run into the Sirens on the way back?” “We did, and I was going to….” “Then why didn’t you call for backup?” Mikasa quickly cuts the man off and glares at him with her amber eyes. “According to the Imperial Navy’s law, there must be at least three KANSENs on the field for all Siren engagements.” The man stutters a little before he continued. “O…our communications were cut! I sent that graduate of yours to call for help but she disobeyed my orders and bolted!” “Oh? I was led to believe that you had her make a temporary contract with you, shikikan-dono. Why didn’t you command her to do as she’s told, then?” “I was going to!! But then your instructor……that…. mutt, assaulted me and forced me to relieve my command!!” The man roars as he points his chubby fingers toward Takao, spewing both saliva and blood out of his swollen mouth that the samurai KANSEN gave him just a few hours ago. The chatters around the dock are getting louder and louder at the mention of a KANSEN attacking their own commanding officer, all eyes are now turned towards Takao, who is still standing atop her vessel’s bow while looking down at her accuser with contempt. “Her name is Takao, shikikan-dono. Please address her properly.” Mikasa casually dodges the nasty projectiles then warns the man with a sharp glare, making him flinch a little from the sheer pressure that she’s exuding. “This is a serious allegation you are making against her; I believe you have sufficient evidence to back your claims?” “Oh I do!!” The man said with a voice brimming with confidence as he notices the gathering crowd. “Give it to her, helmsman!!” The helmsman’s shoulders jolted up in response at the commander’s words, still feeling the concussion from when Takao bashed his head against the wheel when he tried and failed to subdue her. He looks at the commander nervously before meeting Mikasa’s eyes and present her with a small recorder that he had hid away in his pocket. “That is the evidence! Play it, and let everyone know the truth!!” The commander said as he gestures his large hands towards the crowd in a melodramatic fashion. “Is that so?” Mikasa said as she links the recorder with every speaker in the area, then she presses the play button. ----- [I’ll split you in half, swine!! Relieve your command, now!!] [Hiiii!!! Helmsman, get this mutt off me!!] [Move and be cut down, your choice.] [inaudible thuds and yells] [I…I relieve my command…..please….please don’t hit me…..oof] ----- The chatters that filled the dock suddenly died down as every single spectator turns their gaze towards the battered accuser with disbelief in their eyes. “Takao, do you have anything to say about this?” Mikasa asks as she turns the recorder around in her fingers, her amber eyes looking straight at her fellow KANSEN who just dropped down from her vessel and making her approach, causing the commander to scramble and hide behind Mikasa’s back. “I will accept responsibility for my actions, Mikasa-sama.” Takao said as she presents her katana towards Mikasa and bows deeply before turning towards the spectators. “It is true, I forced him to relieve his command and resorted to violence unbecoming of a warrior.” At the veteran KANSEN’s apparent confessions, the quieted chatters turned into a full-blown uproar as the spectators started to argue among themselves about what is going on. The accuser himself was quite surprised too, as he didn’t think that the mutt that has been beaten him black and blue would give up so easily. But now that has the crowd on his side, he could turn this whole situation to his benefits. He then signals the rest of his men to proceed with their plans. “That KANSEN is too dangerous! She broke my arms!!” “Oh, the pain!! The suffering!!” “I was there!! I saw her help that cowardly twerp escape!! How can we trust our lives with these faulty weapons!? “Take her away!! Take her away!!” “We can’t let these things roam free! Make the command module mandatory for all of them!!” The wounded men’s complaints ring throughout the dock speakers like a broken record, startling the spectators who were still reeling from the graphic recording and arguing about what to make of Takao’s confessions. “You can hear her threats clear as day! Now put that mutt in chains!!” The obese man roars as he delivers his ultimatum from behind Mikasa’s back. “I see. Then, on the name of the Imperial Navy of the Sakura Empire, you and your men are under arrest.” Mikasa said coldly as she turns on her heels and locks a steel handcuffs on the commander. “Huh?! Why am I under arrest!? I’m the victim here!! You all heard it!!” The man protests as he pulls his hands away violently, only for Mikasa to let go of her grip and causing him to fall flat on his butt. “Bold of you to ask, considering you are the one completely at fault.” Mikasa said as she pulls out a second recorder from the hilt of Takao’s katana and promptly presses on the play button. “Well, I’ll let your voice do the talking.” ----- [IJN Aanami, where the hell are you going?] [Escaping. Too many Sirens, weird thunderstorm, Ayanami can’t fight properly because shikikan won’t let her. Shikikan is the worst, desu.] [You ungrateful little!!…..I will have you scrapped for parts, you hear me? Come back here right now!!] [Ayanami doesn’t feel like getting closer to shikikan, desu.] [You asked for it!! Commander’s Orders, IJN Ayanami, you will self-des…..oof!] ----- “Wha…what the….” The former commander yelped out loudly as he hears his own voice on a second recording. He turns towards the helmsman for answers only to get a few head shakes and wide eyes. The loud crewmen who voiced their support for him are now silent, their face pale as the spectator’s gaze gradually turns from partial empathy into full blown disgust against them. “Ayanami should consider herself lucky that Takao stopped you from finishing that sentence, doesn’t she? That's a blatant abuse of power against your subordinate, punishable by death, too.” Mikasa said as she looks down on the man before her in disgust while trying her best to not cut him down on the spot. “That...that was not my.....” “Oh please, I may be old but I know how recorders work, you insufferable swine.” Mikasa quickly cuts the fumbling man off before turning towards the now confused spectators. “People of the Sakura Empire, hear me out!" Mikasa yelled into the speaker, gathering all attention to her. "In addition to his abuse of power, this man also violated the law of Siren engagement and sent one of my fresh graduates into battle alone!! See for yourself!” Mikasa said to the crowd as she pulls up a video image of the lone destroyer, Ayanami, fighting for her live against the Siren ship and shows it on the dock’s projector for all to see. The imagery of Ayanami fighting alone without proper equipment and support while screaming out for help is the final nail in the former commander’s coffin, the table was not only turned ….it has completely flipped over and crushed his image into the ground. Every single one of the spectators, humans and KANSENs alike, are now riled up against him, cursing his name and spewing death threats that he so deserved. “This video record was taken by one of the planes that I’ve sent to find his “lost” patrol. Fortunately, Ayanami was rescued by the pilot of this aircraft afterwards, so there is no need to worry.” Mikasa said to the crowd with a reassuring smile in order to calm them down before turning back towards the now disgraced commander with her rage-filled eyes. “Take this spineless swine and lock him up until the Grand Admiral and Nagato-sama gives their verdict.” She said to the imperial naval police stationed nearby and signaled them to move in. “As for the rest of you lot, one week of hard labor should do. Take them away!!” The crewmen who voiced their support could only follow the naval police silently to their punishment, but the main star of this show has a whole different idea. "No....no....no...Let me go!! I'm a war hero!!" He shouted at the naval police that's trying to restrain him. "This is blasphemy!! Injustice!! Let me go you dumb fu....*oof\*" "Shut it, you swine." Takao said as she put her katana's sheath back onto her hip after hitting the disgraced commander on the head. "Thank you, Mikasa-sama. Let me take it from here." She bows before helping the naval police drags the over sized man away. “Hah.....this is why I wanted you to come back to us.” Mikasa sighed as she thinks back to the last transmissions Crowe sent to her. -- [Mikasa, I've found your patrol. Whoever's her commander clearly wants her dead, I'll send you the vids so you can see for yourself.] [She's going to die at this rate....I'm going in, wish me luck.] [Hah....hah....I did it, Mikasa, she's going to be fine now. I'll try to get her back to you as soon as I can...wha!! * Crash*] -- Mikasa wanted to go out and find him immediately after that last transmission, but the position that she's in right now, coupled with the fact that she no longer has her riggings has put a stop to that wish. "You better come back soon....you showa-born idiot." “Mikasa-sama!! Watch out!!” Takao’s distressed voice pulled Mikasa back to the present, she quickly turns around to see the disgraced commander rushing over to her with his pistol drawn. *bang\* That single bullet fired by a delirious man with a false sense of glory found its mark right on the veteran KANSEN’s chest. Mikasa gasped in pain as she reels from the impact before looking up to see a glint of yellow in her assailant’s eyes. She then remembers Crowe’s last warning before he took off from her port. [If you see crazy people with yellow glowing eyes, don’t engage. Call me immediately.] “C...row..e….” Mikasa murmurs as a second bullet penetrated her wisdom cube, sending her plunging down into the waters as everything fades to black. -- Meanwhile, on a small island near the Sakura border. “Come on, you bastard. Show me that ugly mug.” Crowe murmurs as he darts his eyes around the tall grasses that surrounds him for signs of movement, his left hand gripping the makeshift metal spear tightly while his right hand is holding firm to the handle of a large metal hull that is tied to his arm, with thick and sturdy cable lines keeping it in place. He has been crouching among these tall grasses since morning, and now the unforgiving heat of mid-day sun is bearing its full effect onto the back of his neck. Aside from the general dehydration he’s feeling, his concentration is constantly put to the test by the wind blowing from his back that kept on ruffling the grasses, the metallic spear and shield on his hands which has been absorbing the sun’s heat in its full glory are starting to burn his skin, the occasional sweat that dripped from his forehead sometimes find their way into his eyes, and he can see dark clouds gathering on the far horizon. With everything in the immediate vicinity ganging up on him like a group of backstreet bullies, Crowe can feel his patience wearing thinner and thinner as time goes by and his grassland deathmatch opponent is still nowhere to be seen. Of all the island to wash up on…. Is this supposed to be divine punishment? Crowe curses his luck quietly as he recalled what led him to this point. He accepted a commission from his old friend Mikasa a few days ago and filled in for little Shouhou’s combat drill as her temporary commander. Their opponent was one of his KANSEN during the Siren war, Zuikaku, along with her shikikan candidate Arisaka Michiru. The job went as well as he’d expected, Shouhou was all giddy since she got to try one of her decoy plans and he got to play a good prank on the unlucky crane who didn’t’t seem to recognize him in his new appearance. By the end of the day, he almost got a date with the young and beautiful cadet until Mikasa dragged him into her office to discuss his antics. Then, as he was about to leave Mikasa’s port to have dinner with his roommate back at the workshop, she asked him to find a patrol that went missing near the Sakura border. He did as Mikasa asked and found the patrol, but what he didn’t expect to see was a single destroyer fighting for her life against five Siren ships inside a thunderstorm without fire support and authorization to engage her riggings. He did what he could to help the girl and succeeded in saving her life but then the girl flew up right into his Hellcat, breaking its right wing and plunged both of them into the sea where the currents washed both of them up onto this island….where they were greeted by a herd of violent boars that chased him around for the entirety of last night as he carried the unconscious KANSEN on his back. He managed to lose the boars and hide the destroyer in the shades under his Hellcat’s wreck before drawing the boars as far away as he could, but now he’s surrounded on all sides and stalked by what appears to be the ringleader of these furball menace, with only the makeshift spear and shield made from his Hellcat’s hulls as his weapons. Plane’s busted, my only partner is still sleeping like a log, and now I’m stalked by a goddamned king boar with only scrap metal to defend myself…. seriously, what did I do to deserve this? The silence and sweltering heat continued for a few more minutes until the sound that Crowe has been waiting for finally rings in his ears. *Shuffle\* “There!” Crowe shouts as he throws his spear at the tall grass slightly to his left with his full force. The sharp edge of that metallic spear boosted by his arm strength and his rage against the world cuts cleanly though the grasses and landed perfectly onto its mark. *Thud\* A sound of steel cutting through flesh coming from the tall grass makes Crowe smile a little as his patience is finally rewarded. “Ha! How’s that feel you piece of…..shite.” The sight of the boar’s leader alone was enough to drain all sense of pride and accomplishments from Crowe as he tightens the grip on his shield with a tired look on his face. The boar that he thought would at worst be a grown man’s size is actually so large that it rivals the size of a Hogzilla he once saw in the Eagle Union’s morning news, it’s two protruding tusks could easily be mistaken for an elephant’s with its length, and he can see the metal spear he threw earlier falling off it’s tough skin like a toothpick. At this point, Crowe wanted to just pick the unconscious destroyer up and jump back into the sea, to get the hell away from this biological monstrosity, to be rid from the blistering heat that’s still raining down on him, and to find a better island to wash up on. But then, he saw something that turned this whole situation into another level of headache. The king boar before him....it has yellow glowing eyes. The same kind that those crazy ladies he saw in the portal has. "Seriously!?" Crowe yells out frustration as he digs his feet into the ground and glares at the lumbering slab of muscle and fur readying its charge. “Come on then, you bloody wanker! I’ll make a proper porkchop outta you!” *Squeeeeee\* The king boar roars out loudly as it rushes at Crowe with its large frame, intend on crushing him against the trees that lined the landscape. Its speed was so fast that Crowe had to pounce out of the way, losing his solid footing and leaving his side open. The king boar wasted no time in turning around and rams its large head right into Crowe’s gut before shoving him up with its two tusks, sending the man flying a few feet away before crashing violently onto the ground. “Gaha...hgh” Crowe felt the winds left his lungs as he rolls onto the ground, he was caught completely off-guard by this deceptively fast furball and he knew right then and there that he’s no match for its strength. Before he could even get proper bearings and think of a better plan, the king boar was already on its way to hit him again its two long tusks aimed right at his head. *Squeeeeee\* “Oh, hell no!!” Crowe dodged on instinct and barely escaped being skewered, only to be body slammed by the king boar and sent flying out of the tall grass and landing back onto the white beach that he washed up on last night. “Gah….*hack\* ow…..that’s gonna leave a mark.” Crowe grimaced as he lays prone on the coarse sand, feeling the pain running all over his body. He quickly take stock of what he has left and could only sigh at the sorry state he’s currently in, the metal shield that he used to guard against the boar’s attack now has two large holes in it and is basically scrap metal, his spear is nowhere to be seen probably left inside that grassland, whatever protection the layered armor inside his flight suit could provide is meaningless in the face of his opponent’s raw power, and the small knife he has on his ankle is not going to do anything against the king boar’s unnaturally hard skin. “Ah…bollocks….” Crowe groans in irritation as he realizes that he’s back to square one, with his Hellcat’s wreck a few feet away and the destroyer girl sleeping soundly under it. -- Even after getting thrown around in the waves, even after being carried on his back for a whole night, even after all these commotions with the boars, the destroyer girl still refused to wake up. If her shittykan was here, he would probably be fuming right now and call her a useless piece of junk, but Crowe knows that she’s not entirely to blame for her current state. He knew that the destroyer girl sustained heavy injuries from her solo fight against those Siren ships, her body is battered, her riggings were blown to hell, and she needed extensive maintenance. Crowe was going to fly down and give her a lift back to Mikasa’s port when he saw her limping across the sea, but then something happened went wrong and sent her crashing into his Hellcat. The shock trauma combined with her already battered state sent her wisdom cube into hibernation mode which shut down most of her functions, hence her current state. At first, Crowe wanted to just call Mikasa over and let her help, but his communicator was dead on impact. So, he went with the only alternative, he was going to apply a quick-fix onto the destroyer girl with the repair tools he had left and the knowledge that Vestal hammered into his head all those years ago. He would physically disengage her broken riggings so that they will stop draining her wisdom cube of energy, then he would give the girl proper rests for a few days to let her body recover. By following these easy steps, the strain on the destroyer’s wisdom cube would gradually fades away and she will eventually wake up. After that, it is only a matter of her contacting Mikasa’s search party and both of them would be home free. Thanks to the boars however, he had no chance nor time to do any of those things. Especially now that he’s thrown back onto the beach, it would be a matter of time before these blasted furballs notices the unconscious destroyer under the wreckage behind him, which could turn into yet another headache as he will be forced to carry her around again to find another place to hide. He could also feel the wind blowing stronger and stronger from the sea’s direction, which will eventually turn into a nasty storm that could throw the sleeping destroyer out into the sea if he doesn’t get her further inland fast. All in all, his whole situation could only be made worse if a Siren ship, or the crazy ladies themselves decide to show up. You better pay me lots for this, Mikasa. Crowe thinks as he grits his teeth and rolls on his stomach to meet the king boar’s glowing yellow eyes while it approaches with its minions in tow. “Well lads, guess this is where I draw the line.” Crowe says as he stands up slowly and wipes the blood from his busted lip. **[**Sod off, before I turn every last one of you into a bacon platter.] -- *Snort* *Squeeeee\* The minion boars lined up at the edge of the grassland lets out several cheers as their boss trashed a weaker opponent around like a rag doll and now has the prey on its last legs. Contrary to his minions however, the king boar didn’t feel a tad bit of happiness or the usual sense of domination in his mind…no, the only thing it’s feeling right now is something far more primal. Ever since he grew to this size after drinking a weird yellow juice from above, he had absolutely devastated everything on his path. The previous king boar proved to be no challenge, the bigger predators that used to live on this island was driven to extinction by his new, powerful tusks, and even the pale monkeys that occasionally find themselves here could only flee at his sight. The king boar could feel the rage and frustration building up inside ever since he was scratched by the pale monkey’s stick, he could feel exhilaration with every hit he landed, but now… even after three direct hits from him, this pale monkey is still getting up. Now, even with such a battered body, this monkey is still standing in front of him. Why is this monkey not dead? How is it getting up after all that? What the hell is going on!? Would be what runs through the king boar’s mind if it had the same mental capacity as that of a human’s, but his animal brain could only squeeze out one thing as he looks at the pale monkey’s dark blue eyes. It was the one emotion that the king boar has all but forgotten. [What’s the matter? Sod off already, will ya?] The king boar could hear his opponent saying something, but he possessed no brain capacity nor time to understand what it means. No, what the king boar is currently occupied with is far more important than that. After all these years reigning supreme on this tropical paradise, the king boar finally came face to face with something that sends shivers down its spine and kicks its survival instincts into high gear. This pale monkey who was so weak and put up close to no fight up until now seems so large as it drags its feet closer and closer, its dark blue eyes now seems so deep and harrowing like that of the sea’s greatest depth, and even the scrap metal attached to the pale monkey’s battered arm seems to be shining brighter than even the sun itself. The king boar, for the first time in forever, is now dealing with the sense of fear that has begun to eat away at his mind. Then, he hears an unfamiliar voice in his head. [Ooh....he's dangerous...you gotta kill him now, piggy.] -- “Yeah, just leave. I’ve got nothing against you.” Crowe said as he stops a few feet away from the immobile king boar. “Sod off back to your den. Run along, now…save both of us the trou…” *Squee!!* *Squee!!* *Squee!!* [Kill, Kill, Kill] A loud noise rings from behind the king boar, coming from the minions that has gathered behind its back. At that moment, it seems like whatever has been eating away at the king boar’s mind just disappeared and now it’s form stared to warp into something even bigger as the yellow glow in its eyes shines even brighter. “Tch…why can't you ladies just leave me alone....I'm not even a fuckin' commander anymore.” Crowe clicks his tongue in frustration before digging his heels into the sand. *Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!* [Dieeeeeeeee] The king boar, galvanized by his minion’s cheers and the voice his head finally moved and rushes straight at Crowe, its long tusk aimed directly at his guts, intent on skewering him on the spot. Unfortunately, the sands that lined this beach is not solid a ground as the one on the inner grasslands, and before the king boar could even reach Crowe, its immense weight that was even further increased by the metamorphosis causes the ground to collapse right from under it. *Squee!?* [The fu---] With the tables turned according to his plan, Crowe wasted no time and pulls out a large sword hidden in the sand near his feet before swinging it down onto the king boar’s head, making a loud, cracking sound that rings throughout the area. “Gotta thank the girl for keeping this thing intact, and the crazy ladies for giving me their tricks!!” Crowe said as he raises the sword up and bring it down onto the king boar’s skull once again, making the lumbering beast sink deeper and deeper into the sand below with every bone-crushing sound. After a few minutes of repeated strikes, the king boar was rendered immobile under the sands, its body twitching slightly from the head trauma. “Now stay down, before you force my hand.” -- Perhaps finally understanding that his opponent is far more dangerous than he has anticipated, the king boar remained immobile for a few seconds to ponder on his life choices. [Get up, piggy!! You can do it!!] The voice spoke to him again, filling him with even more energy than before. But in the end, he is just a beast. One that was given power beyond his understanding yet possessed no capacity to utilize them to their full potential. The king boar, with his last remaining strength, bursts up from the sand and bares his bloodied fangs at the pale monkey, along with the cheers of his minions behind his back. -- *Shhuntt\* The king boar didn’t even have time to let out another squeal as Crowe proceeds to push the large sword right through its throat, cutting through its thick skin and letting the yellow blood spews out like a fountain. “Didn’t want to do this…. but in your case I guess a life taken is a life saved…. requiescat in pace, porkchop.” Crowe said as he drives the sword up and split the king boar’s head open, letting the headless body fall to the ground and sink further into the sand which is now dyed in yellow. He then eyes the rest of the boar minions and give them one long glare while holding their former leader’s head up by its tusk. *Squeeeeeeeee!?\* (Oh shit! Runnnnn!!) After the minion boars ran away with their full speed, Crowe finally has the chance to breathe freely. Ever since he found himself on this island, it has been a headache after another. Last night he had to run around with the unconscious destroyer sleeping soundly on his back, then he spent half a day waiting for an opportunity to scare a troublesome beast away only to get into one of the weirdest fight of his life, and in the end, he even had to fight using a KANSEN’s sword which is not designed to be swung around by human arms, that was why he had to use some extra juice from the wisdom cube inside his brain to use it properly. Suffice to say, Crowe is completely drained, both physical and mentally. “Of all the goddamn island in this blasted sea….” Crowe murmurs as he notices that the storm is already upon him, and the destroyer girl sleeping under his Hellcat is being carried away by the waves. “Hah…..give me a break…..” *Splash\* -- [AHAHAHA...oh....oh my sides.....!!] [Seriously? What about the fleet I told you to...] [Come on, boss. I know you saw what that guy just did! Those stupid drones ain't gonna cut it!] [I am not sending you in just yet, Purifier.] [Awww] [Don't worry, you will get your chance. If he survives Tester, that is] -- Gonna have to retcon Crowe a little, but I guess a wisdom cube inside his brain should make his life a little easier.
Hi again, I'm back with the continuation of the story. This one is longer than usual because of the "Choices" part, but give it a try and tell me what you think. Links to the earlier chapters are below. FirstPrevious Fanfiction link Temporary Commander: Crowe’s choices and a fateful meeting In the Sakura Empire, enjoying a cup of warm green tea is one of their many customs that promote a serene state of mind, which is crucial for naval officers and high ranking KANSENs alike when they are on duty. The ample amount of caffeine in the tea would also keep their minds sharp, allowing them to see the bigger picture and react to unforeseen circumstances in an efficient manner. In the case when they are off-duty, the amino acids within the tea leaves would help the drinker relax as they soothe their strained mind while they rest in the beautifully decorated personal quarters like the one Crowe finds himself in right now. It has been a few hours since the combat drill between Shouhou and Zuikaku ended in a catastrophic defeat for the latter due to the triple decoy and a little bit of psychological warfare. With most of the participants accounted for after a little hectic debrief on Shouhou’s deck and sent to their dorms, it would normally be considered as a commission complete for Crowe and he would already be on the Hellcat, heading back to his workshop. Unfortunately for him, the client of this commission seems to take several issues on his conducts and has invited him up to her office for a discussion on his job performance. At least she was kind enough to offer him a bunch of rice crackers along with a cup of warm green tea, which is actually working its relaxing magic on him. Sadly, even a gallon of concentrated Theanine (the relaxing amino acids) would not help in soothing Crowe’s conversation partner who is pouring her 6th cup whilst keeping a deceptively calm outlook. “Now, before we discuss your performance.” The Battleship-type KANSEN and senior instructor of the Sakura Empire Naval Academy, IJN Mikasa, said as she takes a sip from the ornate ceramic mug in her hands. “I would really appreciate it if you stop seducing our cadets.” “Seduce?” Crowe chuckles as he takes a sip of his own. “You wound me, Mikasa-san. I was only going to give the girl some pointers, that’s all!” “By inviting her to a dinner date and promising to buy her a new dress? I may be old but I’m not senile!” Mikasa retorted sharply, her amber eyes glaring at the man sitting comfortably on the guest sofa. “Hey, that is just common courtesy for a Royal Navy gentleman Mikasa-san.” Crowe smirks as he answered. “Honestly though, Cadet Arisaka has really good basics.” “You are speaking of her capabilities as a shikikan, am I right?” Mikasa’s eyebrow twitches as she pours the 7th cup, her calm outlook started to waver just a little as her irritation continues to build up inside. “She has good assets too if you ask me.” Crowe smirks as he finishes his green tea and slumps onto the sofa. Prompting Mikasa to clear her throat audibly as a warning. “Would you please continue with her evaluation?” Mikasa demands as she take another sip from her mug. “Well, considering this was her first combat drill she did better than I expected. Better than those idiots from mainland that’s for sure.” Crowe snorted as he recalls the sad excuses that passes as “shikikans” at the Sakura Navy HQ. Greedy, prideful, selfish buffoons mostly, with no real combat experience to back up their shiny badges. There are even rumors of high-ranking shikikans who strips their KANSENs of their parts to sell too, and the worst part of it is that they can’t be tried unless the KANSENs themselves lodge a complaint, which is neigh impossible since the command modules, the leashes, are held by the main perpetrator who would never let their victims run their mouth. Should’ve left them to the sharks, like the worthless meatbags that they are. ----- “Crowe?” Mikasa’s voice brought the brooding Hellcat pilot back to the present, he quickly clears his nasty thoughts and turn his attention back to his client. “Sorry. As I was saying, Arisaka is solid. She just needs more experience in the field with someone who can handle themselves. Give her two years and she will undoubtedly become one of the best, I guarantee you.” Crowe said as he takes another sip to relax his mind. “Then why did you intervene in today’s combat drill?” Mikasa poses her next question, her amber eyes still fixed on to Crowe. “Intervene? Mikasa-san, I only did what you asked me to do.” Crowe replied casually as he counts his fingers. “Temporary commander for Shouhou during her combat drill, making sure that both parties come back in one piece, providing evaluation on cadet Arisaka, that should be it, no?” “The part where your command vessel was used as a decoy to lure Zuikaku out into the clouds before flanking Arisaka’s command vessel with squadrons of dive bombers disguised as paper planes suggests otherwise.” Mikasa said as she pulls up several freeze frames pictures onto her desk, showing them to Crowe. “If that wasn’t enough, you used your Hellcat to throw Zuikaku off-guard and tricked her into following you into the storm, drawing her further away from the command vessel she was supposed to protect.” “To top it off, you personally saw to it that she was beaten by the same trick Grey Ghost always used on her.” Mikasa finished as she shows Crowe a picture of his Hellcat dropping the white smoke pellet onto Zuikaku’s head. “Guilty as charged with the Hellcat part. Sorry, just wanted tease the lucky crane a little for old time’s sake.” Crowe throws his hands up as he answered, smiling wryly as Mikasa continued to glare daggers at him. “But the rest were all Shouhou’s ideas, Mikasa-san. I just helped make it a reality as any competent shikikans would.” “Crowe, I have been training that girl for years and never once did she voice her opinion or suggest these kinds of tactics.” Mikasa frowned as she collects the pictures and put it away. “You do remember that Amagi-san was her teacher too, right? Before she retired at least.” Crowe retorted as he eyes the rice crackers on the table. “Also, her usual shikikan is probably another one of those idiots who never listens to their KANSENs and denied her every opportunity to prove herself just to stroke their ego.” ----- “Well….I can’t deny that.” Mikasa let out a small sigh as she recalls who Shouhou’s usual shikikan is. The man was loud, obnoxious, and egoistic like most of the IJN shikikan nowadays. His only saving grace was the number of medals on his uniform and most of those came from scrapping stationery Siren ships. His treatment of KANSENs, except for high-ranking ones like her and Nagato seems to be abysmal according to the ones that served under him. There had been several complaints of him sending the KANSENs into battle without approving their combat gear, only to show up and “save” them later on too, but those complaints never got “officially” to the Sakura Navy HQ because he has friends in high places. That was why Mikasa asked Takao to take Ayanami with her and get him off base while Shouhou proceeds with her combat drill. That was why she asked Crowe to fill in since she knew that he would treat Shouhou right and allow the little carrier to prove her strength. But Mikasa did not expect Shouhou to win against Zuikaku or cadet Arisaka, the latter of whom was supposed to be given a sufficient challenge and grasp victory in the end for her graduation. Shouhou was supposed to get a chance to blow off some steam with the freedom Crowe would have given her, and it would have helped in building up her confidence so that she could ask to be reassigned, which Mikasa would be more than happy to help with. Crowe’s independent actions have derailed her intended outcomes and she could only curse herself for not taking his usual antics into account, but that was not the only reason she’s feeling irritated at the man before her. No, it is something much more basic than that. Something that has been irking her ever since he came into her office. ----- “See? Shouhou’s got potential, she just needed an opportunity.” Crowe said as he starts to munch on the rice cracker. “She could make a good combo with Arisaka too, come to think of it. They seem to be roommates in the dorm, that could help in building teamwork and trust. If you task Zuikaku with their training as her disciplinary punishment, I’m sure she would be more than happy to help the duo.” “This way, you get two combat-ready KANSENs and a competent shikikan who has deep emotional ties with their subordinates. Not a bad deal, right?” Crowe finishes his evaluation as he gulps the rice cracker down with a satisfied smile on his face. “Hah….If this was your plan all along, I would have appreciated it if you informed me beforehand, Crowe.” Mikasa sighed heavily as she downs the rest of her green tea in one go, coughing a little as the warm tea singes her throat. “Want some honey-lemon candy? It’ll help with the cough.” “Argh!! At least sit up straight will you?!” Mikasa roared as she catches the candies Crowe sloppily threw at her while feeling the irritation that has been building up inside reaching its peak. “When you suddenly showed your face a year ago, I didn’t expect you to turn out like this!!” “Like the embodiment of awesomeness that I am? You flatter me, Mikasa-san.” “Completely opposite of who you were!! Sloppily-dressed, ill-mannered, not to mention flirtatious like a Sardegna gigolo!!” Mikasa was on the verge of giving Crowe the what for with her fist until she saw the wrappings on the candies he threw at her. “Where did you get these?” She asked. Crowe chuckles as he perks up and re-posture himself to meet the veteran KANSEN’s standard, earning him another frown from her. “Got those from Mutsuki. Poor thing lost track of her group when they went out at sea last night, I let her ride the Hellcat back here. She gave me those as thanks. You should keep better eyes on the destroyers, Mikasa-san.” Mikasa’s irritated expression turned cloudy as Crowe finishes his explanation, she unwraps one of the lemon candies and gulp it down before handing the rest back. “I guess there are things that stayed the same too, huh? You Showa-born brat.” “Heh...didn’t think I’d get to hear you say that again, Mikasa.” Crowe scratches the back of his head as he takes the remaining candies back. “Ah…. sorry, can I speak without honorifics? It’s really hard to keep this up, you know?” The veteran KANSEN pondered for a few seconds before she smiles. “Well that depends on whether you choose accept my offer.” Mikasa said in a rather playful voice, making Crowe shudder a little. Her irritated and lecturing demeanor vanished as if they were never there as she circles around the wooden table and approaches Crowe with a worn-out IJN commander’s cap. “You kept it? I thought the Sakura big shots wanted all trace of my existence wiped.” Crowe asks as he touches the old cap softly with a nostalgic smile on his face. “They were too busy hogging the glory kills and keeping other factions from getting ahead, probably didn’t think some of us would keep your memoirs.” Mikasa chuckles as she makes her way towards the window of her office and cast her eyes on the lively docks below. “As you must have seen during your stay here, the Sakura Navy right now is filled with spineless swines and corrupt leaders. Even with promising cadets like Arisaka in our academy, the amount of those sad excuses far outnumbers them, both at sea and in the mainland.” The veteran battleship said as she closes her eyes and pull the window shades down. She then walks over to the table and pull out a piece of paper from her drawer before coming over to Crowe. “That is why we need men like you.” Mikasa declares firmly as she stares into Crowe’s eyes. “Would you be interested in making this temporary contract between us a permanent one?” She asked, handing Crowe the paper she just took from her table. “Men like me? A lecher to the bone with ill manners and sloppy dress code is what the Sakura Empire needs? I’m sure there are better candidates.” Crowe chuckles as he takes the paper from Mikasa and reads what’s on it. “Letter of recommendation for a naval officer candidate at the Sakura Empire Academy. Signed, IJN Mikasa” “Those new habits of yours could be corrected once Takao gets her hands on you, I’m sure she would be more than happy to…...after she wipe the floor with you, of course.” Mikasa said as she hands Crowe an ink pen. “Would you come back to us already, Shikikan-dono?” ----- Faced with the sudden offer Mikasa throws his way, Crowe chooses to; [A: Consider the offer] [B: Reject the offer] ----- [Choice A: Consider Mikasa’s offer] “You think Takao will let me off after a few strikes?” Crowe asks nervously as he signs the letter and hand it back to Mikasa who is smiling in satisfaction. “Well, that depends on you, Shikikan-dono. You did hide the fact that you're still alive from her, after all.” Mikasa said as she grabs Crowe by his hand. “But I’m sure she will be happy to see you like I was.” “Remember, Mikasa. I’m no longer the commander you used to know.” Crowe chuckles as he stands up from the sofa with a determined look on his face. “I’ve learned a few things from my otherworldly trips, and I intend to use them to their full effects.” Mikasa shoots him an intrigued look. “Then I will place my expectation a little higher, Shikikan-dono.” ----- Two years later True to his word, Crowe used every knowledge and tricks he learned during his time in the Siren portal to its full effects. He quickly caught up with Arisaka in her class and graduated from the Sakura Academy in record time, rising up the ranks in their navy until he found himself a comfortable position as a fleet commander of Mikasa’s port. After that, he continued to build his fleet back to its former strength by recruiting abandoned KANSENs from all over the world and giving them a place to stay in his newly built home base on the old Azur Lane’s HQ. There were obstacles, of course. Mostly from the jealous snobs that didn’t even think of working hard to get their high positions in the first place and the human leaders who saw him as a threat, but the worst they could do was slander Crowe with unfounded allegations or send incompetent assassins after him. Both of which are dealt with promptly, in a way that would leave the prepetators think twice before attempting it again. The real threat to him actually came in the form of his KANSENs, most of the time by Takao and Zuikaku who reacted rather harshly to his identity reveal. And while the former one eventually mellowed out after several life-threatening therapeutic sessions together, the latter is still hounding him for aerial duels to this day. Still, Crowe considered the choice he made two years ago a great success, he has a solid home base, reliable friends, and now he is in the position to help improve the KANSEN’s situation as he sees fit. ----- “Admiral Arisaka, I’m happy to see you in good health.” Crowe does a sharp salute at the newly appointed admiral as she disembarks from her vessel in full regalia with two bodyguards on her side. “At ease, Crowe-san.” The admiral, Arisaka Michiru returns his salute with one of her own as she looks around the port, bustling with both KANSENs and human staffs alike. “I see you have been working hard to restore this base too, how have you been?” “Things are moving along just fine, admiral.” Crowe bows his head respectfully and gesture Michiru towards his office building, which is decorated in the four faction’s flags, Eagle Union, Sakura Empire, Ironblood, and the Royal Navy. “Please, follow me.” Michiru could only stare in awe at the sight of countless chicken-like creatures that roams the hall performing maintenance duties, she could only wonder what kind of strings Crowe had to pull in order to get each of the major factions to agree on giving him back the position of Azur Lane’s sole commander. But most of all, she could only shudder at the enormous fleet of KANSENs Crowe has under his command, most of whom are fanatically loyal to him even with their control modules removed. “C-Crowe san….can we speak in private?” Michiru asks nervously as she feels the gazes of every KANSENs nearby burning into her back, most with curiosity, some with stronger feelings behind them. “That is inadvisable, admiral Arisaka” One of the bodyguards interjected. “This man has been blacklisted on every nation’s entry for a reason.” “We are only here for a negotiation per the Grand Admiral’s command.” The second bodyguard adds as he places his hand on his sidearm. “There will be no…” *Thud* *Crash\* There was no time for the two bodyguards to react as they were sent flying into the wall by the two Sakura KANSENs standing in their place, both sporting their signature katana and wearing a nasty look on their face as they sneer at the unconscious humans sliding down from the dented wall. “Takao…..Zuikaku…..” Crowe could only sigh at his two KANSENs while he comforts the trembling Michiru in his arms. “They were threatening you, Shikikan-dono.” Takao retorted as she signals the Manjuus to bring the bodyguards back to their vessel. “No one threatens you under my watch.” “They asked for it, too. What kind of negotiators would bring weapons with them!” Zuikaku added as she sends out her origamis. “Sakura fleet approaching from the west, Shikikan. They are preparing for an all-out assault on our base. Some of the leftover KANSENs are leading the charge too, with explosive collars…..damned cowards….” Crowe sighed again as he grabs Michiru by her shoulder. “Michiru, please stay inside my room until the alarm’s off. We can talk after I get rid of those meatbags. Takao, keep her safe with your life.” “Understood, but do remember that your life holds more meaning to me than hers, Shikikan-dono. I will prioritize your safety above all else.” Takao declared flatly as she turns on her heel, beckoning Michiru to follow her with an indifferent look on her face. “O…Okay, Crowe-san. I’ll wait for you.” Michiru said nervously as she followed Takao to Crowe’s office. “Now, Zuikaku.” Crowe cracked his fists as he turns toward the Carrier beside him and grins devilishly. “Let’s see how those idiots fare against a real challenge.” “No quarters?” Zuikaku asks as she sharpens her katana, wearing the same look Crowe has on his face. “This is just a combat drill, Zuikaku.” Crowe chuckles. “Give them some handicaps and call it a day. Oh, be sure to bring those girls to our side too while you’re at it.” “Hehe…Your wish is my will, Shikikan-sama.” [Holy Moly…. She actually beat them all half to death] [I’m more interested in this Crowe guy…. world domination in just two years? How the hell did he even get code T to work for him?] [Indeed, after that fiasco with Ayanami I thought she was going to kill every human on sight.] [This cycle is going to be interesting, a shame she couldn’t be part of it] Alternate End: Tyrant Crowe (Sakura version) ----- [Choice B: Reject the offer] “Sorry Mikasa-san, I’m afraid I’ll have to decline.” Crowe replied, bowing his head slightly at the veteran battleship and returned the letter to her. “May I ask why?” Mikasa asks as she takes the letter back with a disappointed look on her face. “I’m doing just fine with all these commissions, see no need to anchor myself anywhere for the time being.” Crowe said as he flashes his full purse of gold coin. “Besides, I’m not really cut out for commanding KANSENs around anymore.” “Crowe, I’ve served under you.” Mikasa narrows her eyes at Crowe and crosses her arms. “That excuse won’t work. Hero of the Siren war.” “Exaggerations to the highest degree that one. I’m just lucky whatever I touched in that portal managed to shut the rest down.” Crowe replied nervously, thinking back to his bizarre experience in the siren portal. “The amount of commissions you have completed this year alone, plus the result of this morning’s combat drill would suggest otherwise.” Mikasa said. “Despite your current demeanor, you are as good a commander that you were, on this I insist.” “Oh, I’m not the commander you or the girls looked up to anymore, Mikasa-san. See? I don’t even look the same.” Crowe retorts as he points to his hair and eyes. “Aside from you, no one has even noticed yet and I plan on keeping a low profile since the chaps over at the Royal Navy would likely throw me into one of their political games if they know that I’m back from the dead." "Seriously, it would only give me more headache than I care to deal with.” Crowe smiles as he spins one of the gold coins around his fingers. “So that is why you refused to contact the Royal Navy?” Mikasa widen her eyes at Crowe’s confessions. “I’m sure that If her majesty hears of this, she would send the whole fleet after you.” “That’s what I’m trying to prevent here, Mikasa-san.” Crowe said as he continue to play with the coin. “Aside from the Royal Navy, the human leaders would not take kindly to me disturbing their pecking order by hogging up their KANSEN’s attention.” Crowe sighed as he imagines what kind of trouble his “resurrection” would bring to this already shaky world. Not just for the Royal Navy, but for every factions that he had helped out during the war. He knew that the ones who had served directly under him like Mikasa would somehow realize who he is and would come running, making the ones that follow them come after out of respect and curiosity. If he didn’t know better, he would think that he could just take over the world and solve the problem of KANSEN slavery that way, but alas, the world is not so simple. “But know this, Mikasa-san." Crowe said in a deep, commanding voice, making Mikasa's shoulders jolt in response. "While I don’t plan on becoming a fleet commander again, I will do something about those blasted control modules. Of this, I promise.” Crowe said as he clenches the gold coin in his hand and stares intently into Mikasa's eyes. “I....see." Mikasa replied as she feels her wisdom cube resonates with Crowe's voices. The nostalgic sensation of hearing her old shikikan's commanding voice sent waves of positive emotions throughout her body. Positive emotions...like butterflies in her tummies.... "With that said, can I get the gems now? Gotta go back home before dinner." Crowe winks at the veteran KANSEN who has a slight blush on her cheeks. "Ha..!!" Mikasa yelped as she realized she has a sloppy look on her face. "Ghh...can't believe I let you sway me like that...." Mikasa grimaced as she realizes that she had been played by him again. “Here’s your payment you brat.....stay safe this time, will you?” “Thank you for the patronage, Mikasa-san.” Crowe chuckles as he takes the box of red gems Mikasa prepared as payment for his commission. “And don't worry about me, I plan on having a peaceful retirement after I deal with the wankers who enslaved you all”. He gives Mikasa one final bow before leaving her office with a wide smile on his face. ----- The Hellcat’s engines make a satisfying roar as Crowe turns the power on. It’s full-flap metallic wings let out small creaking sounds as the wind blows against them. “System’s all green. Ready for takeoff.” Crowe said to the radio in front of him, which is linked to the flight control tower on Shouhou’s deck. “Have a safe flight, mister!!” “Crowe-san!! I’ll be waiting for our date!!” “You won’t get the drop on me next time we fight!!” Crowe could only laugh at the combat drill trio waving their hands at him from the bridge, seeing them together like this reminded him of how relationship between humans and KANSENs used to be, an equal partner…..not master and slave as they seem to be right now. “Crowe!!” The fourth voice came from Mikasa, who sounds more worried than usual. Crowe quickly switches over to his personal channel to answer her. “Mikasa-san? What happened?” “When you fly over the border, would you please look for a small patrol of two KANSENs? Their communication’s been cut for some reason.” “They run into one of those Siren clouds?” Crowe asks worriedly. “Possibly, their last transmission mentioned something about unusual thunderstorms too.” Mikasa replied. “Got it, I’ll look around and tell you once I’ve got something. Keep the channel open and have medical teams ready for treatment. If I don’t contact you back then assume the worst and send out the search parties with two heavy cruisers and a carrier support. Get Zuikaku on the job, she will be more than happy to help.” “See, shikikan-dono? You’ve still got it.” Mikasa chuckles at Crowe’s spitfire orders. “Or the patrol could already be on their way back, who knows?” Crowe laughs heartily as he takes off from the flight deck towards the direction of the Sakura border. “And it’s just Crowe now, catch you later, Mikasa-san.” ----- “Well that is a Siren cloud alright.” Crowe curses his luck as he observes the raging thunderstorm before him. It has been a few hours since he left Mikasa’s port in order to return to his workshop, but he took a detour to look for Mikasa’s missing patrol group. Now where is that patrol…..hm!?” Crowe’s squinted eyes widen in surprise as he realized that a lone KANSEN destroyer is fighting for her dear life among the crashing waves just ahead of him, pursued by five Siren ships. A single destroyer? Where is her support group!!? Crowe curses as he flies his Hellcat downwards. “Hey! Can you hear me!?” Crowe yelled through his IJN comms frequency at the girl beneath him, only to get statics as answers. Insufficient combat gears, damaged riggings, alone with no support ships…commander must be a real ass or he must have wanted this girl dead. Crowe grits his teeth as he lay out the possibilities. “Damn it…. Repeat! Sakura destroyer down there!! Can you hear me!!?” Crowe yelled out again and this time he finally got something in return. What he heard from the comms however, turned his guts inside out. [Shikikan, authorization to use combat gears please!!] [Huh? I thought I told you to scout, what the hell did you do?] [The Sirens woke up, desu!! Authorization to use….] [Denied!! You have your sword and that should be enough to disable those ships. Now stop bothering me!!] That girl’s gonna die at this rate… Crowe frowns at the gruesome sight below him as he hovers above her. There is no possible avenue of exit for this girl, she is alone without support from her group, her shittykan wouldn’t even let her fight at full strength and the other KANSEN is nowhere to be seen. Even if he wants to guide her out of the storm, he can’t communicate with her properly due to her damaged riggings. Even if he wants to help her fight, his Hellcat machine guns won’t do any good against the Siren ship’s armored hulls and his single payload is barely enough to disable one of them. The pained scream from the destroyer that flows into his comms also doesn’t help, but he couldn’t just shut her off and leave her to die alone. “Think…Crowe. You’ve survived five apocalypses already…. think, you idiot…” Crowe racks his head as he continued to curse his powerlessness. It has always been like this for him, whenever he gets into a pinch, he would somehow find a way to get out of it alive, but when it comes to saving others…. he couldn’t do anything more than his “best”. It was the same for his conscript friends when they faced off against their first Siren ship, his “best” couldn’t save them from drowning even though he got himself out. It was the same when he was caught in the Siren’s trap, his “best” couldn’t help the rest of his crew when they were fried to death. Even in the different worlds he finds himself in when he was inside that portal, it was the same…. even with all the allies and powerful weapons on his side, he couldn’t save anyone but himself in the end. His “best” amounted to fuck-all every single time it counted, and now he is witnessing another one of that moment right in front of him. The moment when his “best” is basically useless in the grand scheme of things. “Give me something…come on!!” Crowe curses as he focuses deeper into his thoughts, shutting off almost everything except for the destroyer’s cry for help below him. “Hero of the Siren war, my ass….” Then, as if to answer his call, a shrill voice rings inside his head. ----- [Siren hulls…..laser penetration……movement-based targeting….] [Payload….Decoy……Opening……] ----- Crowe shudders at the sudden cryptic voice, he had no idea where it came from but there was no more time to think anymore. The voice gave him some ideas, and now he knows what to do. *Whoosh\* Crowe flies his sturdy Hellcat right into the thunderstorm where the destroyer girl is. She is still fighting for her life, narrowly dodging the Siren laser cannons and shielding the impact with her worn-out sword. But it was only a matter of time before she slips, so Crowe quickly put his hastily-formed plan into motion. As one of the Siren ships on the backline takes its aim on the destroyer, Crowe flies his Hellcat daringly right in front of its primed barrels, tilting his fighter ever so lightly so that it barely dodged the laser blast and gaining its attention. That single siren ship quickly changed its target and kept on firing relentlessly, each shot grazing Crowe’s Hellcat by a hair’s breadth and making him feel the heat shooting right over his head, and that was what he intended. He kept on flying dangerously close it its primed barrels and fired his machineguns back from time to time, toying around with the significantly larger vessel until it started to change its original course and pursue him instead. Once he was sure that the Siren ship has its eyes on him, Crowe pulls up and disappeared into the thunderous clouds above the ship, prompting it to shoot its lasers upwards repeatedly and lighting the dark clouds up in a spectacular red hue. With both the Siren laser and the thunderclaps coming after him, Crowe had to keep himself on edge every single passing seconds, one hit from either of those would put him out of commission. If that happens, he would die, the Sakura destroyer he wanted to save would also die, and his friends will remain as slaves to the worthless meatbags forever with no one to help them. “Screw that…. I’m going to save them all…. starting with this one!” Crowe yelled out loudly as he continued to dodge the lasers and thunderclaps, feeling a mix of rage, excitement, and fear for his life mixing up in one messed-up whirlpool of emotion that a pilot shouldn’t have when he’s flying in hostile environment. He kept on narrowly dodging everything this world throws at him until he noticed that the lasers started to come at him in a significantly lower interval and a loud warning sound could be heard from below him. “Let’s go then….” Crowe grins as he pops one of Mutsuki’s lemon candies inside his mouth and dives down from the cloud, his eyes fixed on the Siren ship that is still firing at him, significantly slower than before with its burning barrels. As he continued his descent, Crowe eyes another Siren ship that has the Sakura destroyer surrounded, he shifts his fighter slowly towards its direction as he continued to dodge the slowed laser blast from the one that’s still firing. When he finally got to the altitude thar he wanted, Crowe quickly pulls his Hellcat up and let the payload go. “Boom\* The sound of high-explosive payload crashing on metallic hull would turn every head to its direction if not for the thunderstorms and raging waves drowning it out, and that was what Crowe was betting on. Out of the five Siren ships that had the Sakura destroyer cornered, two is now focused on Crowe and his Hellcat, firing their lasers at him sloppily as one had a burning barrel from overheating and the other one had its targeting systems disabled from Crowe’s payload. Normally, he would already be satisfied and let his KANSENs finish the job, but this time it is different, he had to finish them off by himself and give the struggling Sakura destroyer the opening to escape. “Come get me, clankers…” Crowe chuckles as he circles around both Siren ships, painting him as their targets and dodging their laser blasts without a hitch, he then circles around and lowers his altitude so that he could position himself right between their barrels. “Whoom* * Pshhh\* The two Siren ships that had him sandwiched fired their laser simultaneously at their target, their algorithms calculated its certain destruction. Crowe could feel the heat of the lasers approaching him from both sides, then he grins. “Friendly fire…incoming.” Crowe pulls his Hellcat up with everything that he has got, feeling the lasers grazing barely past his cockpit’s window and burning some of the glasses off. The sudden impact of the wind coming through the glass hole shook him up a little, but Crowe quickly recovered and turns his Hellcat around to observe the labor of his works. *Bzzt* *Crash\* The two Siren ships that had fired at him now has a large gaping hole on both of their hulls, letting out a nasty electric buzzing along with loud warning sounds that would have penetrated Crowe’s ears if not for the wind blowing through his cockpit. Crowe smiles at the sight of his work and turns towards where the Sakura destroyer was, she seemed to have noticed the opening he had created for her and has started to dash towards the exit. With the immediate threat to her life gone, Crowe quickly gained altitude and followed the Sakura destroyer behind, keeping his eyes on her just in case. ----- [Sakura KANSEN……partially damaged…maintenance advised] [Pilot vitals…elevated….8 hours rest advised] ----- Crowe was startled as the voices in his head suddenly came back again, but he was too tired to think about it after the stunts he pulled inside just minutes ago. His sole focus is on the Sakura destroyer below him, speeding through the storm like her life depends on it. Crowe tried listening in on the IJN comms channel again, this time he hears something that sounds like music to his ears [IJN Ayanami, where the hell are you going?] [Escaping. Too many Sirens, weird thunderstorm, Ayanami can’t fight properly because shikikan won’t let her. Shikikan is the worst, desu.] Crowe chuckles at the words the destroyer just said and closed his comms, letting out a relieved sigh as the girl finally pushed through the storm and kept on moving full speed ahead. “Atta girl, you’ll be fine now.” Crowe murmurs to himself as the strain of his aerial maneuvers coupled with the headwind blowing into his face makes him dizzy and blurring his sight. But he was content, he managed to save that destroyer, Ayanami, from certain death. “Now I gotta find somewhere to land….” Crowe groans tiredly as he forces his eyes open, only to be met with one of the most bizarre things he has ever seen in his entire life. That destroyer he just saved….. she is flying up….. …right into his Hellcat!! “UWAHHHHH” “Wha…” *Crash**splash\* ----- [Crowe, huh? Who exactly is he…] [Who cares, he’s just a dumb human.] [One that tricked our drones into shooting themselves, Purifier.] [He did? You sure that wasn’t just his dumb luck?] [That is what I intend to find out. Send another fleet at them, run the scans this time] To be continued.
2020.06.01 01:16 BlugenesiMan, Thanks for the fair use, Toho. A little bit of a rant
I gotta be honest, i’m really upset about this. I don’t know if this breaks any rules, nor am I here to advertise my channel. I’m just very angry with the company that owns this property that we all love, and I wanted to share my frustrations. I run a very small channel right now, but I love doing it to entertain. I want my channel to be about my interests, which mostly pertain to older movies like the universal horror films and other monster movies of the era and beyond, cartoons, and video games. It’s no secret based on my username what kind of games are my favourites. Again, I am not doing this to advertise, i’m only explaining the context. I did a king kong retrospective not too long ago as my first scripted video and although it’s not perfect by any means, I’m proud of it as a first attempt. Since then I did two game related videos that aren’t important to the story, but I really wanted to do a video on the original godzilla. Surprisingly, I found it harder to do with the darker subject matter, and it was hard to write a script that wasn’t too depressing. after all, the way the world is right now, I don’t want to be another depressing voice. Now, with Kong, sure it got copyright striked. I knew that going in, but I didn’t care, as I am not nearly big enough to be partnered, nor was I suprised. I used the original score in the background. what was really important was that I could share the video with everyone. I was kind of worried with this one, however, So I made my video without using any of the original score, no video audio, nothing. I used about 6 minutes maybe of footage, since I wanted to make this one shorter then my big kong video because there was less to talk about. I uploaded it early so it could air when I wanted it to, trying to fit on schedule. It was immediately blocked. Of course I was pretty frustrated. I mean, first of all, i’m a huge fan of the series. I bought the nearly 300 dollar in canadian showa era set, and I own most of the other era godzilla movies too. Then you have to remember I used 6 minutes or less of silent footage without subtitles (90% of the video is focused on the japanese version) of a nearly 70 year old film. there’s no audio from the movie, and if they put ads on it, that would be one thing. But the video is blocked meaning no one can see the content I worked really hard on getting done on time. So what did I do? I re edited it. I and my friend who’s better at editing then me made the video smaller, added a 35 mm video border, and flipped the whole video besides pictures. We put hours into fixing it, thinking it would be safe. I really didn’t want to turn the video into a slideshow, to be entertaining to the viewer. The video was finally finished 5 am Mountain time today, and I had to download it since my friend lives out of town and I finally got it uploaded 4 pm. about two hours late. It was still blocked. Now, maybe i’m still wet behind the ears with this. Maybe you consider me stupid for even thinking that would work. and that’s okay. I have thought of every bad name for myself in the hour or so since I got the news. So I have no choice. I have to re edit it again, and make the whole video a slideshow. And I don’t know what it means with future movie reviews. I expected problems with newer movies, but I never expected the trouble with The original godzilla. And what about the universal movies like Dracula? It’s really discouraging and honestly I love making these videos, but it sucks that I really have no way to defend myself. This is unrelated, but I did a few parts of a donkey kong country two let’s play, my normal unscripted type of content on week days, and the video was claimed for ad revenue by some asshole who made the slightest remix of stickerbrush symphony. So now I have to wait a month before the ass stops making money off of my video. Again, I hope this doesn’t come off as me advertising. I do like to share my content on these reddit pages other times, only when it fits in the subreddit, but today, I just wanted to get this thing off my chest. I hope you all understand. Thank you so much for reading this guys. Note: Reuploaded and deleted the original because I forgot the title was unfinished. Sorry about that
2020.05.31 06:14 MayChantWhat's this sub's take on the way localization teams change the game where it's not necessary?
I started this game in English and switched over to Trad Chinese during the fishing contest (since having less characters in the dialogues allowed me to catch one more fish than in English). Since then I've noticed a lot of differences:
Dialogues at the airport/with Wilbur are way longer in English. That includes Wilbur using code names for islands and explaining that the plane is a sea plane. Not sure if the code names were in the original version, too since I don't speak Japanese.
C.J. is only a streamer in English... Because the pun only exists in English. Consequentially his dialogues are longer in English, too, since he's constantly talking about his streaming career. (Plus, just to address the elephant in the room, no matter if the English localization team meant "business partner" or "romantic partner" by using "partner", it absolutely does not mean either "childhood friend" or "roommate", which is from the original text. So they did change the meanings of the dialogues here, no matter what the intention was.)
Saharah's gender is male in Trad Chinese (same as in the original) but female in English.
It's a minor detail I've noticed. In a certain dialogue between peppy and smug villagers, the peppy villager yells "I WANT TO DANCE", but in the Trad Chinese version of the same dialogue, it's something like "I WANT TO GET A DATE". The peppy villager may also mention that she was dumped recently. Again, not sure which version is altered here but it's clear that they're say different things.
Personally, when I play a game I want to experience the original developers' creation. I think the localization team's job is not to essentially create their own little subversion of the game by tweaking here and there, but to translate the piece of work and keep its original meaning as much as possible, unless it's hard to understand in the language/region the work is being localized into. For example, "Comrade K.K." is originally "Showa K.K. Ballad", but this name would be hard to grasp without the cultural background. So it's justified to change it. But there's just so many minor changes that builds up a wall, instead of a bridge, between me and the "original" game. So I'm wondering if the majority of you have the same opinion, or the majority of you don't mind/like these changes?

2020.03.28 15:07 Friedrich_von_EbertProgress Report 47: Land of the Blinding Sun (Japan Pt.1)
Hello and welcome to Progress Report 47 for Calm Before the Storm. I am Friedrich_von_Ebert, the current Developer for the Greater Japanese sphere. Today, in our first Japanese PR, we will take a look at the National Unity Government (1933-36). As a consequence of the Manchurian Incident in 1931 and the 5.15 incident in 1932, Japan's democracy began to falter, and the Emperor, along with senior politicians called "Genro," organized the National Unity Cabinet, led by naval figures in an attempt to save democracy. But as you all know, the 2.26 Incident took place and the government collapsed. This is the first of the planned Progress Reports on Japan. The other planned ones are:
National Unity Government (1933-36) (this PR)
Toseiha Regime (Hirota Koki, Konoe Fumimaro, Hiranuma Kiichiro, and etc.)
Kodoha Regime (Kita Ikki, Araki Sadao, Ishiwara Kanji, and etc.)
Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-45, which will be written with our Chinese devs)
Each path will have a seperate focus tree, and my goal is to complete the content covered by those four PRs by the time of the release of 0.1. So, let us begin! Disclaimer: No one in the CBtS development team supports the Empire of Japan's war of aggression and its accompanying war crimes in any form.
In 1868, the Tokugawa Shogunate, which had lasted for 250 years, collapsed as a result of the Boshin War, leading to the formation of a Japanese empire centered around an emperor who had not been involved in politics for close to a thousand years. The Japanese Empire successfully completed its transition from a pre-modern feudal state to a modern national state, but modernization was done too quickly compared to other European countries, and only 65 years before CBtS starts. This is known as the "Meiji Restoration" of 1868. Furthermore, Japan used Britain as a model for its country, calling itself the "Britain of the East," but the Meiji Constitution, which was enshrined in 1889, was modeled on the Prussian Constitution. The constitution, which introduced the abnormally powerful Prussian constitutionalism with the Emperor's power, was a structure not compatible with democracy from the start, and like Germany, had a tendency of allowing Generals far too much power. But unlike Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who plunged the nation into ruin, Emperor Meiji and his successors, Emperors Taisho and Showa preferred not to intervene in politics. The military's power, which has been excessively increased since the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1905, has, however faced strong resistance from civil society, which has grown with the Meiji Restoration. The establishment of the first party cabinet, the Hara Takashi Cabinet, in 1918 marks the golden age of prewar Japanese politics, commonly called "Taisho Democracy". There are differences over when the Taisho Democracy ended. Some say 1925 when the Peace Preservation Law was created, some say at the end of 1927 when the Showa Economic Crisis occurred, but they all agree that Taisho Democracy had definitely ended by the time of the Manchurian Incident of 1931 and the 5.15 incident of 1932. The short golden age of Japanese democracy was over, and the military, which had not been at the forefront of politics since 1912, had again emerged as a force to save the country from ruin.
Japan's democracy, already shaken by the Manchurian Incident of 1931 and the subsequent 5.15 incident in 1932, has certainly begun to fluctuate. To defend unstable democracy and prevent the military from taking full power, the Emperor and Genro ironically appointed a naval figure, Saito Makoto, as Prime Minister. It has already been six months since the establishment of the Saito Cabinet in May 1932, but Japanese society is still full of anxiety. The Showa Economic Crisis in 1927 has yet to be fully resolved, right-wingers are constantly seeking coups, and riots, demonstrations, and strikes are frequent. The mission of the National Unity Government is to stabilize Japanese society and keep it from falling into extremism. Japan starts with the following national spirits:
Rising Militarism: When the people lost faith in the civilian government, officers naturally began to rise to power. This can be dealt with after the event chain of July 1933 ends.
Divided Army: Represents the famous conflict between the Kodoha and Toseiha factions. Unfortunately, this will not be resolved until 1936.
Chinese Expansion: Represents Japan's continued expansion into China since 1931. It doesn't have any effect at the beginning, but it will change when Japan takes more land in China.
The focus tree of the National Unity Government is divided into two major branches: politics and economics. Originally, there was supposed to be a branch dealing with foreign and colonial policies, but it was deleted and replaced with decisions and events. Also, please note that it is difficult to take all of these focuses before February 26, 1936. You need to prioritize and think ahead about what kind of government you want to have after 1936.
The main goal of the National Unity Government is to solve the problems of Japanese society as of 1933, and save democracy from the military and their supporters. But it is very easy to solve this through the focus tree in-game; all you have to do is just take the focus and wait. However, various incidents will hamper the government's efforts to stabilize Japan, and as a result, the government's efforts may be vain… The political focus tree is also divided into three small parts, each addressing the issues of Rising Militarism, Fading Democracy, and Prevailing Social Anxiety. But the real purpose of NUG political focus is not to fix these debuffs. Instead, the aim is to control the influence of each political faction that will emerge after 1936, which will ultimately determine who will take over the Japanese government. Of course, if Kodoha comes to power as a result of the 2.26 Incident, influence will be meaningless. The factions will be explained through the decision part below. The most important part of this focus tree is which of the three focus points in the middle, which, as described above, depend on how the event chain, which begins in July 1933, ends. The leftmost focus aims to solve the problems currently facing the government with the cooperation of the military, and the middle focus is historic, choosing not to enlist the cooperation of bureaucrats and the military, or to borrow both, and the rightmost focus is to win the cooperation of bureaucrats. Whatever you choose among the three doesn't really affect the outcome, since the factional influence is the main content. Here’s the full political tree.
In 1933, Japan's finance minister was Takahashi Korekiyo, who is regarded as the first person in the world to adopt Keynesian economic policies. While FDR began his New Deal policy in 1933, Takahashi has already been addressing the 1927 economic crisis with Keynesian economic policies since 1928. Japan’s economy in 1933 was almost on stable ground, and after the "The Crisis is Over" focus, the economic crisis will be over, and additional economic policies may be implemented. There are also three economic policies that Japan may take after that, and they have a huge impact on the factional mechanics. The far-left focus will maintain the Keynesian economic policies that Takahashi has taken so far, but will cut military spending and thus make the armed forces very angry. The middle is the historical route: maintaining a Keynesian economic policy, but following a fiscal policy that won't anger the armed forces. The right-most focus is the opposite of what Takahashi has done: increasing military spending and fostering heavy industry. Of course, unlike the political focuses, the economic focuses will have a completely different outcome depending on which policy you take. Keynesian policy ultimately makes the economy better, but it's completely different from what most people want, so stability and war support will go down. This tree is not recommended if you want to focus on military industry. The rightmost tree has the opposite effect. The trade-off for this would be having to sacrifice modifiers like industrial efficiency and factory output. The middle tree is the most balanced and historically appropriate. Here’s the full economics tree.
Contrary to the government's expectation of avoiding war and restoring stability to the economy and society, Japan from 1933 to 1936 moved in the opposite direction. The people condemned the incompetent government and supported militarism, and consequently forces in the military began to move without the government’s permission. I have chosen to set the player as "The Emperor," and since all these actions would not have been possible without the Emperor's tacit consent, I decided to implement the incidents caused by the Japanese military as decisions, instead of controlling everything with forced events that the Japanese player would have no control over.
Japan’s events in 1933 start with Operation Nekka. And from then on, there will be a number of different events that will try to undermine the stability of this country and overthrow the regime. And while there are a variety of flavor events, to give the player additional things to do, there will not be many events that have a positive effect. The most notable issue is the Go-Stop Incident event chain, which has been mentioned previously. A soldier on vacation started jaywalking and was stopped by a policeman, which led to a major clash between the entire Japanese bureaucracy and IJA. There are a total of three outcomes, and as you may have noticed, the results limit the political focuses you can take. If you've raised your army's hand, the left focus will open, if you've held the bureaucrats’ hand, you can take the right focus, if you've ordered a compromise, you'll be able to take the focus in the middle.
Things that were not under the control of the government or done by the government in real history, for example, the Bank of Japan or the Governor-General of Korea, are controlled by decisions. I originally intended to put more decisions in, however the decisions which are sure to be in 0.1 are: A total of three Political Factions, representing the groups that can take power after 1936. They are as follows: The Kyowa Faction, Led by Hirota Koki The Yokusan Faction, Led by Konoe Fumimaro The Kannen Faction, Led by Hiranuma Kiichiro You can raise or lower their influence through decisions. You can make them Prime Ministers, or limit their influence through special mechanics after 1936. This will be covered in future progress reports, but keep in mind that before 1936, their influence can still be controlled. The Government-General of Korea was originally planned to be on the foreign policy focus tree but was moved to a decision because it was clear players would not take it. Players can build infrastructure in Korea by paying political power and civilian factories (because it's clear that players will not build infrastructure in Korea as well). You can also see numbers that seem to be familiar. By adjusting those, you can successfully keep your authority in Korea, but if you fail, there may be terrible consequences… The North China Buffer State Strategy begins in early 1935, which aims to establish independent countries to drive out Kuomintang by uniting with warlords in an area called North China (Hebei). There are a total of five decisions at the moment. This will stir up anti-Japanese sentiment in China and could be a fatal blow to Chiang Kai-shek. While these three decision categories will be all for now, there will be more decisions after 0.1 to make pre-1936 Japan more flavorful.
Will there be a left-wing path?
No and Never.
What was the rationale behind Koki Hirota taking the helm as a major faction within Japan? OTL he was just merely another diplomat and, while he indeed became Prime Minister, was merely a dude who placated the military and gave in to many of their demands.
Because Hirota was a very unusual figure, supported by the Emperor and Genro, he was the leader of the orthodox bureaucrats who opposed the reform bureaucrats. And because I've decided to make a political faction mechanics, I had to put in three different ideologies and factions, and I thought that Hirota was the right person to be the head of a faction because he was actually the Prime Minister OTL.
In the National Unity Government tree, why is there an option wherein the NUC will accept military superiority? No one in the NUC would ever dare openly advocate military superiority, especially since the last Genro, Saionji Kinmochi, would never allow it to happen. Even the Emperor himself during the early 30s was pretty adamant about his denial of militarist takeover.
“Accept Military Superiority” does not necessarily mean letting soldiers into politics. This is an admission that the military is a force to be reckoned with in Japanese politics, and as you can see from the focus, the government is not succumbing to the military, as it expands the Kempeitai and draws the line between bureaucrats and the military to prevent further confusion. It's my fault if the meaning isn't properly conveyed.
Would a """democratic""" path (aka a return to the two-party system that dominated the 20s) be possible in the game?
We have seen that many are interested in this question, but it will not be available in 0.1.
Why were the Reform Bureaucrats called "Innovation Officials/Innovation Bureaucrats"? It's not much of a concern for me personally it's just that most academic sources referred to them as Reform Bureaucrats.
Because the term Reform(ist) and Innovation (or -tive) in Japanese is pretty similar, as the term “Kakushin (革新)” covers both of them. So I just use both of those terms, because why not?
In the "Factionalism in Japan" event, it is stated that Konoe's Yokusankai would be able to complement party politics. Would this mean that Fumimaro Konoe would be able to reform and proletarianize Japanese Democracy like in his original goals? Or would it be similar to OTL where the military and bureaucracy threw everything out of the window?
Aside from the fact that this question deals with post-1936 content, I will make it possible to create the Great Japan Party (大日本黨), which Konoe actually tried to make. In OTL, Yokusankai was a product of compromise with old officials and Zaibatsu, and thus did not function well.
In the Prime Minister list, it was shown that Tetsuzan Nagata is a potential PM, yet he died very early on. Would this mean that the Toseiha have a potential early on a chance to gain power?
Not in 0.1, however Nagata can survive the Aizawa Incident in further versions.
Would incidents like the various battles between Japan and her puppets versus China, like the Defense of the Great Wall and the Battle of Rehe, be handled with border disputes?
No, it will be handled as full-scale war, and other conflicts will be represented by decisions and border wars.
If Japan gets puppeted by a communist country, will they be allowed to keep the Emperor? Sanzō Nosaka, one of the founders of the Japanese Communist Party who got Stalin's endorsement for the leadership of the Japanese Communist Party, wanted to keep the monarchy but have Hirohito replaced with Akihito instead.
Post-1936, and TBD.
Is there a way for Japan to rekindle the old alliance with Britain and join the Allies?
No, they cannot join the Allies in 0.1, and I’m opposed to the possibility. However the Kodoha will want to sign a non-aggression pact with them because they want to make the rear safe when they attack the Soviet Union.
How will Japan interact with Germany?
Not much, actually, because they didn’t interact that much with each other. However Japan will have a focus to sign the Anti-Comintern Pact and attack Singapore to fulfill the Germans’ demand.
Is there a way to "win" the war as Japan (which includes beating the US or at least the UK in Australia and India)?
Though this is Post-1936, I’m thinking of making a scripted peace deal if Japan takes Calcutta, Darwin or Hawaii, but basically TBD. And of course, it will be very hard.
Is there flavor for the Japanese actions in India?
If you meant the Azad Hind and Indian National Army, then there might be. However it is still TBD.
How large can the Co-Prosperity Sphere become?
The same as the size of Japanese expansion.
Paths for Japan?
Sorry, post-1936 and it’s very much TBD.
Also is there content for the Japanese various puppet governments?
This is post-1936, and Japan can definitely establish them, however TBD.
What would be the most radical or worse path for Japan to take?
Kita Ikki’s Japan? I can’t answer properly because wasn’t Japan bad enough in OTL?
Will the US/MacArthur's military occupation be shown or is that out of the timespan?
Very post-1936, and yes, it will be shown.
Any chance to be friendly with China and/or Release Korea and return Taiwan?
Friendly with China? Probably. Release Korea and return Taiwan? NEVER!
I assume the three main paths are gonna be democratic, monarchist, and fascist, right? The commies didn't have much popularity in Japan. And I assume that the first two have some sort of option for reconciliation with America, yes?
The main paths are basically Toseiha, Kodoha in 0.1 and I’m considering democracy but not very likely. Toseiha contains Authoritarian, Autocratic Despotism, and Far-Right Authoritarian. And every politician and military figure in Japan hopes to avoid war with America, basically.
Who can join Japan's Co-Prosperity Sphere?
Everyone who can be conquered or already is conquered.
With the invasion of Manchuria in 31 essentially exposing the civilian government as powerless to stop/reign in their military, what events happen between 33 and 36 that can be used as justification to being Japan back towards civilian authority and lessen military influence? Lots of questions here regard a democratic path for Japan, so i’m curious about how exactly Japanese leaders could make this happen.
Very hard question to answer, however I already put some coup and assassination attempts like Shinpeitai Incident and Aizawa Incident, so I think they can be the answer.
Will there be possibilities of an early war against Soviets/China/Netherlands/UK?
Kodoha will try to attack the Soviets before the Soviets attack them, and wasn’t the war in China already early? However Operation Nekka can be escalated to full-scale war between JAP and CHI, but not in 0.1. And I can’t find a reason why Japan attacked the UK and the Netherlands before 1941.
Will Japan’s expansion options be locked into either southern or northern expansion or can Japan do both?
Depends on what path you chose, however it is pretty post-1936, so this can be answered in another PR.
Can Japan be allies with the UK/US, or at least friendly, and can Japan take a different approach to dealing with China?
Kodoha wants to ally with China, and of course, everyone in Japan wants to be friendly with the UK and US, however the circumstances didn’t let them. It depends on the UK and US rather than Japan.
Will it be possible to make the 1934 military academy coup successful or at least make so that attempts by radical elements of the Imperial Japanese Army in creating the Showa Restoration be possible?
No, only the 2.26 Incident can succeed. The other ones were very unorganized and therefore unlikely to succeed. Of course, 2.26 was also very roughly handled by the government. However after 0.1, I’m planning to make a decision category handling the Kodoha and Toseiha conflict, and that might be your answer.
Will it be possible to bring the Kodoha faction to power?
Will it be possible to make Manchukuo, Mengjiang and maybe Korea equal partners to Japan?
Mr. Ishiwara, here’s your partner!
What other political paths, if any, are there besides the strictly historical Fascist path?
The historical path (Konoe and his Yokusankai) is regarded as Autocratic Despotist in-game. And I already answered this question though, will be in another PR.
Will Ryukyu be releasable?
Why? Do you want to achieve the Three Mountains achievement in HOI4?

2020.02.17 07:51 capsicumnugget3 week Japan trip (end of Dec 2019 - early Jan 2020) report
Arrived to Narita on the 21st Dec 2019 and left on the 11th Jan 2020.
We stayed in Tokyo, Shirakawago, Shin-hotaka, Takayama, Sendai, Fukushima, Naoshima and Hiroshima.
I have travelled to Japan many times before but it was my partner’s first time.
Snow season started late this time so we didn’t see snow in a few places that we expected to but we still had pretty good experience with heavy snow falls in other places.
Partner isn’t interested in temples and shrines and I’ve seen enough so we only went to a few small ones on our way.
We did a lot of shopping and also had a few lazy days when we could sleep in and only have 1 or 2 plans for the day.
I did a 2 years Japanese language course and spoke a little so it wasn’t too bad travelling around.
When we were planning the trip, my relatives from Vietnam were planning to come to Tokyo during this period too. That’s why I decided to stay in Tokyo for 4 nights before we headed down south so I could hang out with them. Unfortunately, my relatives cancelled their trip last minute and we couldn’t be bothered changing our itinerary anymore.
Some tips: - Since we travelled between cities a lot, we decided to just stay in hotels near the stations rather than airbnbs. That also means we didn’t need to pack our pyjamas and some toiletry stuff. Most hotels also come with massage chairs for ¥200-300/15 mins, one hotel offered free massage chair in the common area. We stayed in Shinagawa for most of the time in Tokyo since it’s also one of the main shinkansen stops. - For the night before our departure day, we stayed in Oosaki, where we could easily find a bus to Narita airport for ¥1,000 per person. - Took the bus from Narita to Shinagawa, chucked all our suitcases in the bus, had a good nap without worries and the bus arrived at right in front of our hotel. - Shopping at this time was amazing, most things were 40-60% off for end of the yeanew year sale. - Can’t trust google on opening and closing hours during the new year holiday. Do check the stores/ restaurants’ websites or social media to be sure. - Make sure to do some research for special bus packages if you visit Takayama and the alps. - Sendai is such a good place for shopping without the crowds and impolite chinese tourists. - Most hotels provided umbrellas when it’s snowing or raining. - We used our debit card which doesn’t have any hidden fees so withdrawing cash or paying by card was so easy. It was also convenient using our Suica cards at conbinis or vending machines.
Day 1: Tokyo Arrive around 9am and pick our sim-card up at the airport post office. Took bus to Shinagawa. Left luggage at the hotel and went to the station to take care of JR pass and reserve Shinkansen tickets. After lunch we headed to Yayoi Kusama museum, tickets were reserved online for the 3pm session. Headed to Shinjuku central afterward to exchange money and had some drinks at a small local bar in an old and depressing building. Nice cocktails and good selection of Japanese whiskey for reasonable prices. Went to winter illumination nearby in Shinjuku before heading back to our hotel. Day2: Tokyo Got up early and head to Aomi station in Odaiba for Teamlab Borderless at 10am. The queue was quite long when we got there. Spent 3 hours there and then proceeded to Teamlab Planet. We got tickets for the 1:30pm session. Lunch at the food stall at Teamlab Planets. Spent about 1,5 hour there. Went to DiverCity for the giant gundam figure and headed to Yurakucho station to meet a friend for dinner. Went to Shibuya to see another friend at Tsutaya, had dessert and drinks at the cafe on the 7th floor, nice vibe. Went to Tower Records and the Don quijote to get some stuff for winter (heated foot pads, gel, eyemasks, foot masks, etc). Day 3: Shirakawago Took the train from Shinagawa station in the morning. Arrived to Toyama and got bus tickets to Shirakawago. Arrived around 1:20pm. It wasn’t snowing there at all. We left the luggage at Shirakawago no yu ryokan and went to get lunch and walked around town. The weather was pleasant, it wasn’t as cold as we expected. We took a pleasant walk to the observatory and back to the village around 4pm. Took a bath at the onsen after we got back from our walk. It was less crowded then. I’ve been to this hotel before and realised they lifted the tattoo ban in the onsen. We did another evening walk after dinner and returned early to rest. Day 4: ShinHotaka Left Shirakawago at 10:20am to Takayama. Got the Okuhida Marugoto 3 days value tickets. Leave for Okuhida on the 11:40am bus. Started seeing a lot of snow on the way. Got to Shinhotaka ropeway bus stop around 1:30pm. Left luggage at Hotel Hotaka and went to Ropeway terminal to have lunch at the restaurant there. The food wasn’t bad at all. The mountain was covered in snow so it was quite nice for a walk before we checked in. We decided before the trip to spend a quiet and peaceful Christmas in the mountain and rest up after all the travelling so we booked a room for 2 nights here. The rate is AUD720 for a room with views for 2 nights including breakfasts and dinners. The onsen was top notch. Clean and well taken care of. I tried to go early before dinner and I had the whole female bath for myself. The outdoor onsen was beautiful with mountains covered in snow views and their amenity was excellent. Dinner was delightful with so many local dishes. A staff dressed in Santa Claus outfit went around the tables giving out small packs of Christmas treats as presents. There wasn’t much to do around. My partner went to the onsen while I spent time on the massage chair. We bought some beer and enjoyed a slow and quiet Christmas’s eve in front of the fireplace at the lounge. Day 5: ShinHotaka (Okuhida) Woke up with the view of the mountain covered in thick snow and a peak of the alps. Went back to bed after breakfast because we were lazy. Took the bus to Hiruya onsen and had lunch at a restaurant near the bus terminal. Walked around town, had some onsen eggs, did some souvenirs shopping and bought some beer at a convenient store. It’s way cheaper than getting anything from ShinHotaka ropeway as there were no convenient stores nearby. We just enjoyed the snow and played with some Shiba inus on the streets lol. Had cake in a cafe near the bus stop and got back to ShinHotaka ropeway terminal around 4:30pm. More relaxing time at the onsen. Dinner at the hotel and went to star gazing at 9pm, this was organised by the hotel. Day 6: ShinHotaka - Takayama Went to ShinHotaka Ropeway in the morning. It was very cloudy and misty. We couldn’t see the alps at the lookout but it was snowing quite heavily and we went for a walk at the park outside the ropeway station. Had lunch at the ropeway station. Took the bus to Takayama around 2pm and got to the city around 3:45pm. Checked in at the hotel and went to a late lunch/early dinner at a place called Kyouya. Lucky we went early as you need a reservation for dinner. The food was good, we had more Hida beef yakiniku and tried some local beer. The owner and staff were very friendly and chatty. Went back to the main shopping district and walked around after dinner. Went to the hotel’s public bath and around 10pm we felt a bit hungry. It was raining at the time but we decided to go to Dekonaru yokocho for supper, it was 7 mins walk from the hotel. We settled in an oden place which sat comfortably 8 customers at a time. There was English menu and the owner spoke English just fine. She used to study English in Melbourne (AUS) and we had a lot to share about the city. Some young customers were interested and tried to speak English to us too. The owner also tried to make us feel included in every conversation with other local customers. We had a lot to drink and left when it was almost 1am. Day 7: Takayama Had a bit of a hangover in the morning so we slept in. Went to a place called Ryu Ryu for lunch. Ordered Hida beef ramen and it was so good. I decided to do a little food tour around Takayama old town. Went to Pudding Tei and tried their Snow pudding which was good too. Had Hida beef gyuman, Hida beef croquette, pumpkin cheesecake, Hida beef sushi, dango and sake tasting. Went to the Showa museum and it was so much fun, especially since I was exposed to Japanese media/culture since the 80s-90s. It was snowing very heavily in Takayama. And the old town was flooded with so many tourists. Shops started to close around 5pm. We went back to our hotel for a bath and went to a sushi bar in Dekonaru for dinner around 10:30pm. The sushi bar sat about 8 people max. Sushi chef spoke fluent English and showed us an English menu. We ordered the premium set and it was delicious. Chef wasn’t very chatty but he was really attentive and polite. The food was great for 2 people for 50AUD. Day 8: Sendai Took the train at 11am to Toyama. From Toyama took another train to Omiya and then to Sendai. Went to the shopping centre next to Sendai station to find food but ended up doing a lot of shopping. There are a lot of good Japanese brands and brands from Europe. Shopping was a lot easier in Sendai since it doesn’t seem to be a big tourist spot or popular with Chinese tourists. Had pizza for dinner and it was really good. Went to the arcade and spent an hour or more there. Met up with a friend from Sendai for a drink in Aoba. Day 9: Sendai Took the train to Matsushima in the afternoon because we were dead tired from the day before and decided to sleep in. Went to have “all you can eat” oysters (¥2000 for 40 mins) and it was good fun. I was so bad at opening up the shells and the Japanese girl sitting across me must have felt bad watching me. She signalled me to follow how she did and I master the art of eating oysters lol. After 30 mins I already got sick of oysters and thought I would never wanna eat oysters again for at least a month or two. Visited the Date Masamune museum. It was a nice sunny day but the wind at the bay was quite chilly. We wanted to take the ferry around the bay but we got lazy and wanna walk around town instead. We tried some other local snacks like the huge rice cracker and fish cake. Got back to Sendai and did more shopping. So much better than shopping in Tokyo or Osaka since there were like 85% less crowded. We found some vintage stores too with so many items in good quality. Stumbled upon a hedgehog cafe. Late Yakiniku dinner near our hotel. Sendai beef was so good too. I only knew about Sendai gyutan before this trip and was pleasantly surprised about how good Sendai wagyu was. Day 10: Sendai We slept in again. Queued up for almost 50 mins for gyutan at a popular place right next to our hotel. Went to Aoba Castle area. Did more shopping. Went back to the yakiniku near our hotel since most restaurants are fully booked. The owner recognised me from the night before and I wrote a good review for them on google and he gave us free dessert as a treat. Day 11: Aizu-Miyashita (Fukushima) We went to the station early for breakfast. Then took the 10:40am train to Fukushima and arrived at Aizu-Miyashita around 2:30pm. Our train from Koriyama arrived later than the schedule and we almost missed the Tadami train from Aizu-Wakamatsu. Train only came once every hour so the staff actually waited for people to board the train. Views from Tadami train were lovely. It started snowing heavily on our way to Aizu-Miyashita too. My friend in Japan helped me to book a guest house which is less than 5 mins from the station. It was a small guesthouse with 3-4 rooms and ran by one old lady. She single-handedly prepared all breakfasts and dinners and also tried to use a Japanese - English translator to communicate with guests. It was snowing really heavily so we only did a short walk to the Triple Arch Bridges. The town was so quiet. The only conbini opens until 7pm by an elder man. We stocked up as many drinks and snacks as it was the last day of the year and everywhere else would be closed for new year. We had dinner at the guesthouses with other guests and exchanged our stories. The owner lady prepared dishes that Japanese always have for new year. There was a fireplace in the dining room and we just relaxed there drinking beer while watching Gaki no tsukai. We wanted a quiet new year and that was it. In a town that the majority of the population is elderly, most shops and restaurants were closed for the new year holiday. Guess what we did for our new year’s eve? Watching NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen and other gameshows on TV lol. Day 12: Aizu-Miyashita (Fukushima) We had a late breakfast and walked to the nearest shrine. Snow started melting then :( Then we took a walk to the famous viewpoint of the Tadami river’s bridge. Took almost 50 mins since the roads were covered with snow and ice. By the time we reached the viewpoints, the next train was coming in an hour or so. We basically just sat around waiting for the train to pass. Had some good views of the bridge but snow already melted a lot and it was quite windy so the water wasn’t very still. Walked back to town and went to check out the onsen in a ryokan nearby. Went to another viewpoint for another train passing by. This viewpoint is only 20 mins walk from the guest house so it was easy to get there. We went back to our guesthouse and it started snowing again. Had dinner and rested up early since we were taking an early train the next day. Day 13: Tokyo Breakfast at 7am and we took the 9am train back to Tokyo. Got to Shinagawa around 2pm and checked in to our hotel. Had a quick lunch in Ebisu and walked around Ebisu before going to Roppongi Hills for Mori Art Museum. The queue was a bit long since it was public holiday. We spent about 2 hours there and took a walk around Roppongi Hills. Had dinner in an udon restaurant in Roppongi. Went back to the hotel early and had couple of drinks in a bar near the station Day 14: Tokyo I wanted to take my partner to Meiji jingu. I don’t feel bad if he comes to Japan and not visited any of the major attractions but by the time we got to Harajuku station, it was flooded with people going to Meiji jingu. It was so crowded it probably would take up 30 mins to move for 100 metres. So yeah, screw it we went shopping. We spent the whole day from Harajuku to Omotesando and then Aoyama then back to Harajuku. Motsunabe for dinner. Well, my partner can’t eat this so he ordered something else and I was craving for motsunabe since I was in Sendai. However, most restaurants required at least 2 people for the dish and I couldn’t order motsunabe for one and I ended up finishing the whole pot for 2. I wanted to check out some clubs in Tokyo but walking the whole day for shopping wore us out so much we ended up going back to the hotel to rest. Day 15: Tokyo Headed to Harajuku again because some shops were closed on the previous days. If you are interested in Japanese designer brands, check out Studious stores in Harajuku. Went to Shimokitazawa for vintage clothings and had a couple of drinks in a bar there. Went to Shinjuku to exchange for more cash and showed my partner Kabukicho at night. Went to Ebisu so I can have Afuri ramen. It’s always my favourite ramen chain in Tokyo. Day 16: Naoshima From Shinagawa we took the 8am train to Uno station. Arrived at Naoshima around 2pm. We rented a bike and left our suitcases at the bike shop. Our luggage was delivered to the hotel by the bike shop staff. Went to Chichu Art museum and had lunch there. Went to the yellow pumpkin and then Benness house. Cycled to our hotel which is nearer to Honmura area. The italian restaurant attached to the hotel was actually really good. The pizzas were delicious and the dessert was beautiful. Day 17: Inujima and Teshima Took the 9:20am ferry from Naoshima to Inujima. Visited Seirensho Art Museum. Walked around the island for the "Art House Project" and the dog statue. Had lunch at Ticket center cafe. I quite enjoyed Inujima, there aren’t many artworks on the island but every single one of them was memorable. The island population is only 50-70 people and majority of them are over 50-60 years old. We met some local who were very friendly to tourists. I’m glad this art project was done in this island and attracting more visitors. It felt very tranquil there. Got to Teshima around 1:35pm. From the port we did a short walk to Yokoo house. We walked back to the port and took the bus to Teshima Art Museum. The architecture was impressive. We took the bus back to the port and got back to Naoshima around 4:40pm. Went to Naoshima famous public bath house “I Love Yu”. Got back to the hotel and went to the nearby okonomiyaki restaurant for dinner. Food was delicious. Day 18: Naoshima - Okayama - Onomichi In the morning we walked to Honmura for Naoshima Art House Project. Personally I like every single art house project we visited that day. The staff was very attentive and informative and that helped us to understand the art works better. Visited Ando museum. It’s a small building showcasing most of his works on the island and nearby islands. For someone who wasn’t familiar with him before, it was a good to visit the museum after actually seeing his works in person. We walked back to the hotel and called for a cab to the port. Left Naoshima around noon. My partner wanted to get some jeans from Momotaro jeans but we couldn’t find his size in Tokyo. We decided to stop by Okayama and went to the flagship store there. We walked around the main shopping district near Okayama station and had lunch there. Arrived to Onomichi around 4pm. Walked around the town centre and ended up having dinner in a modern looking restaurant that opens till late. We had different kamameshi sets with some drinks. Hiroshima lemon cocktails were so delicious. Day 19: Onomichi The weather was terrible. It was raining heavily since the morning and was very windy. We went to Onomichi museum of art in the morning. Another building by Tadao Ando, it’s smaller than we expected. We walked around the area for half an hour and ended up having lunch at the cafe nearby. I also got to try my favourite Yamaneko pudding near the station. Despite the weather, we decided to follow our itinerary and visited Okunoshima in the afternoon. We got to the island around 2:30pm, had fun watching and feeding the rabbits and the poison gas museum. We didn’t actually read about the museum’s existence so it was quite interesting to see a dark past of Japan on an island full of wild rabbits. We got back to Tadanoumi Port around 4pm. I saw on google map there was Princess Kaguya museum nearby so we took a walk there. It was a small old building but it was cute seeing all little details about the folklore. Arrived to Onomichi around 7pm and I had Onomichi ramen in the shopping district while my partner opted for pizza in another italian place and it was surprisingly so good. For such a small town, there are quite MANY Italian restaurants. Onomichi is really a quiet town, shops open late and close early, I wonder how they do business there. It didn’t look like there were many tourists either. When I first came to Japan 5 years ago, my friend and I accidentally booked a hostel in Onomichi instead of Hiroshima center. We only stayed for 1 night but I had a good impression of the town and its people. That’s why I decided to come back to visit. Well, that’s not entirely true, another factor was that I’m a big fan of the Yakuza game franchise and Onomichi was one of the main locations featured in Yakuza 6 and I would love to visit and walk through the paths in the game. It was fascinating to see how students taking the train back to Onomichi then waited for the ferry to return to their homes on another island. I remember taking a 15 mins direct bus to school back in highschool and I was often late or lazy to go to school then. Onomichi is a really small city with not a lot to do to be honest. There were some new trendy-looking cafes popping up, good food and it made me feel like I could actually slow down and relax there. Will I come back? Definitely! And next time I would rent a bike and do the biking trails. Day 20: Miyajima and Hiroshima We visited Miyajima in the morning. Got to the island around 10:40am. I already read about the torii is currently under renovation but my main objective here is to try the oysters on Miyajima. And I thought I already got sick of oysters from Matsushima. How wrong I was… Headed straight to Kakiya Honten for an early lunch and to beat the crowd too. Got a special set with lemon beer. It was so satisfying. We walked to Daishoin Temple and Itsukushima Shrine. I got attacked by deers :( They tried to eat my paper map and my coat. Tried oyster bun and more oyster snacks on the way back to the port. We got to Hiroshima around 2pm. Took my partner to Peace memorial museum and even though I had been there 3 times, I still got so emotional. We took a walk to the park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. We checked out the shopping district and had Hiroshima okonomiyaki for dinner. Returned to Onomichi around 10pm. Day 21: Tokyo We were supposed to take the 9:30am train to leave Onomichi and we got to the station almost 20 mins early, and then we took the wrong train lol. Neither of us realised that we took the train from the wrong platform even though I checked my tickets several times. Brain fart moment there. We were desperate to take the train back at the next stop but guess what, every stop on from that train line is 12-15 mins apart from each other. By the time we arrived at the next stop, we were already late for our train. We still managed to rebook our tickets at Fukuyama JR station and ended up arriving at Tokyo around 4pm. We returned to Harajuku because I wanted to get some coat from a shop there. Unfortunately the coat was sold out and the only place that had it in stock is in Takashimaya Shinjuku. We went to Shibuya to get some basketball cards for our friend and then headed to Shinjuku for last day shopping. Apparently there was a 50% off for the coat I love after I left Tokyo earlier. So instead of buying 1 coat, I ended up getting 2 different ones :) We went to Don Quijote for some souvenir shopping and bought a small suitcase. Returned to our hotel in Oosaki and started packing :( Day 22: Last day in Tokyo Our flight was at 7:30pm so we had the whole morning hanging around the Ginza for window shopping. Had my favourite chirashi don for lunch in a sushi restaurant while my partner opted for wagyu burger in another place. Ginza Dover street market & Ginza 6 were such a temptation since almost everything was on sale. We got back to our hotel around 3:30pm, picked up the suitcases from the hotel staff and took a 5 mins walk to the airport bus stop. We got tickets for 4pm bus and arrived at the airport around 5:30pm. More souvenir shopping at the airport and i had some ramen as my last meal. Surprisingly it was quite decent, not the best ramen but definitely the best airport meal I have had. Some photos from the trippart 1part 2part 3
2019.11.26 13:01 johnknight648What if some motif from few heisei/reiwa kamen rider shows can be used for the revival of other ishinomori toku properties
Hey guys, Watching some of the heisei and reiwa kamen rider series ,I think some of these motifs might have been used for a revival of other ishinomori toku properties. So in this thread I will explain what happens if some motif from few heisei/reiwa kamen rider shows that can be used for the revival of other ishinomori toku properties. Inazuman Since Kamen rider 555 (or faiz) has the Orphnochs which has humans turns into beast and has an orphnoch become a rider (a descendant of cyborg rider motif from the showa rider era) ,How about maybe it can be used as a motif for an inazuman series where it has an Orphnochs theme but has one of them be an inazuman form where its first form will be a gray like scale monster similar to inazuman's form Sanagiman but can break its shell to reveal the faiz version of inazuman but with wings giving the theme of angels (like goseiger) especially that he resemble a human being just to show his care for humans and humanity Kamen rider Kiva has the vampire monsters called Fangire so what if we used the fangire thing in another inazuman revival series but instead of kiva it should be an inazuman protagonist who is half fangire and Half human as he changes into the form of inazuman but vampire themed similar to Kiva and with a alternate personality like jekyll and hyde Robot detective K Since Both Kamen rider W and Drive have police and detective theme,I think that it can be used as a revival series for Robot detective K Like for example if a Robot Detective K series will be similar to Kamen rider W,The main hero will be a hard boiled detective with a trench coat and hat in civilian form and will be joined by two other robot detective to take down enemies.he can write down the case in his computer at the end of every two part episode arc except the penultimate one where its the other robot detective who finish recording on what is considered to be his last case though he will come back alive in the finale. The title might be called Robot Detective J And if a Robot detective series will be similar to Kamen rider drive,It will have a human teaming up with a robot detective who has similar memories to his deceased partner and take down the Roidmudes and can drive his car. Also each robot detective might team up with the original robot detective K in a special crossover movie and maybe focus on each of them in a manga similar to the futo detective series Henshin ninja Arashi Since both Kamen rider Hibiki and Gaim has the samurai/ninja theme ,I thought maybe what happens if both themes might be used as a revival for a Henshin ninja Arashi series and also I think Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya should have been part of the franchise ,if it has the bird theme but will be set in the then present that is the 1980s For the hibiki series,I think it might be a sequel for the henshin ninja arashi series but set in the present time and similar to the original plot of hibiki where it involves a young boy who becomes apprentice with a arashi ninja who has a motif of a raven and will involve a clan that consists of arashi bird like ninjas while battling against monsters. For the Gaim series similar to the Kamen rider gaim series but different, the story will be a sequel to the original arashi and set in the 1970s since the original aired on that era , it will focus on the descendant of arashi himself as he and the townsfolk use Kendo to fight in a local tournament instead of the street dance one in gaim ,The protagonist will turn into a newest incarnation of Arashi since birds and animals will be the motif instead of fruits and will have guidance of the original but now deceased spirit of Arashi in the form of a bird to fight against the mysterious monsters, there will be other ninja and fighters in the form of birds and animals including one that pays homage to Shinsei. The last arc would have the gaim arashi sacrifice himself to defeat the monster big bad but results in his death and is mourned by his fellow ninja and allies and the final episode will be set in the present where his spirit help his descendant use his power to take down the last surviving monster And I think a crossover film for the arashi franchise will have the arashi ninjas that will have the original arashi, the Jiraiya arashi, the hibiki arashi and the gaim arashi summoned in a mysterious dimension to fight in a mysterious kendo like tournament to be the best while fighting against the true antagonist Space Ironmen Kyodain Since Kamen rider Fourze has a space theme especially that its suit design resemble one of the Kyodain from ishinomori's Space Ironmen Kyodain,I think that motif could have been used as a revival for a Space Ironmen Kyodain,Where the plot is similar to the original fourze but will have two high school students the fun loving jerk with a heart of gold like Gentaro Kisaragi and a serious loner like Kengo Utahoshi as their bodies transform into a modern version of Space Ironmen Kyodain to take down zodiarcts and they can fuze into one mecha being. Kikaider Since Humangears who are robots are used in the first reiwa era kamen rider series zero one ,what if this motif could have been used for a revival of the kikaider series where it involves a Kikaider robot who is one of the prototype humangear since he has red and blue color on both sides as he must take down the rogue humangear called Magia,The story will be similar to the Zero one story will focus on a female college student who ends up being appointed as the CEO of a company to take her deceased grandfather's place. She also has a brother who is a middle school student but then the company was attacked by rogue Humangears called Magia led by the mysterious 'MetsubouJinrai.net'. In desperate need she awakens one of the prototype Humangear created by her grandfather called Kikaider whose purpose is to protect the grand children of his creator while fighting against the Magia ,He will use a human guise based on the younger appearance of his creator and try to understand about human life and its surroundings. The story will have three type of humangears protagonists who are considered the kikaiders modeled after the classic ones The zero one kikaider-Based on the original kikaider , He will have a red half and blue half which might be that they are the fusion of the two prototype humangears who must have caused some incident so long ago.He can protect the granddaughter of his creator and the company while trying to protect innocent lives against the Magia ,he can also take on the form of his creators young appearance as his human guise . he can use progrise keys to take on various forms .His allies must be the granddaughter of his creator and her middle school brother similar to the allies of the original kikaider The vulcan kikaider-I think he might be one of the law enforcement humangears based on Kikaider 01 though he will remain blue as it is to indicate his status as a police officer ,he will have human emotions and will be considered a veteran and might sometimes have a tsundere friend relationship with the zero one kikaider ,His human allies are a female and a male detective of the police. and he can also use his progrise keys to take on various forms Horobi Hakaider-Similar to Horobi from zero one ,he will be based on hakaider who will lead his fellow rogue humangears 'MetsubouJinrai.net' against humanity and he will be colored black with yellow stripes around his face like the original hakaider but no brain and he can also use progrise keys to change to various forms. Also off topic that I think Metalder and the kikaider reboot should have been part of the kikaider franchise which the latter already is ,The theme from ryuki should have been used for a kikaider revival series since it is robotic and metallic and I think a kamen rider reiwa generation like movie will be about the zero one kikaider teaming up with the original kikaider trying to save both dimensions. And thats all I can explain about what happens if some of the motif from few heisei/reiwa kamen rider shows that can be used for the revival of other ishinomori toku properties. What do you think?
