2020.03.10 00:44 Garbage940 My story

I am now 28, from the UK if anyone cares. I have been visiting prostitutes since I was 19.
It started when I was I college and everyone around me was talking (bragging) about how many girls they'd had sex with or, for some, the fact that they'd had sex at all. So I did some research and found out about a brothel in my local town (small city really). And I went there.
It was a bit dingy, and all I had was a massage with a "happy ending". But I was the first kind of sexual contact I'd ever had with a woman in my life.
Before this the only sexual activity I'd ever partaken in was receiving oral and anal sex from a man I'd met on the internet. I thought I was gay, I'm not.
I visited the same establishment a few months where I lost my "true" virginity to a young woman from Taiwan.
Since then I've visited probably over 20 different women who sell sex. I've visited women who've indulged my crossdressing fantasies, I've visited women who've acted timid, I've visited who are so dominant I became their plaything, I've had threesomes with women and men, I've had sex with transexual women, women have spat on me and in my mouth, I've been made to choke on sex toys, I've spanked and been spanked, I've had my hair pulled and I've pulled hair myself, all 3 of my sexual organs (mouth, penis, and anus) have had a mouth, penis, or sex toy in or on them at some point. I've indulged my sexual appetites to an almost De Sadian degree.
To this date I've never had sex with a woman without money changing hands at some point. And I worry I'll never be able to have an honest relationship with a women, because at some point they'll ask me "How did you lose your virginity?" and I won't have the strength to tell them the truth. And I worry I'll never be able to settle down with one woman given the life I've led.
But I do think that it's been good for me overall. If I wasn't able to have sex with and talk with women without social subtext, I would be a worse person for it.
Having sex with prostitutes on a regular basis has taught me that the physical act of sex is meaningless in and of itself. Love it what makes it more than just a biological process. If I'd never had sex, I'd probably still see it as the ultimate goal of, and reason for, a relationship, rather than knowing it's just a small part of knowing and truly loving another human being.
When I was a teenager I was bullied, reclusive, with poor personnal hygeine, niche interests, and no interest in working for a living. I couldn't see why girls didn't look at me twice *rolls eyes* It had nothing to do with the above problems, if they'd just look past the horrific exterior they'd see the real me. Never mind that I'd never given them a reason to look, and as far as I was concerned women were a different bloody species at best, and walking vaginas at worst. I was a trainwreck, and continued to be one into my twenties.
If it wasn't for a Tiawanese prostitute named Mimi, I'd be a redpilled, incel, 'niceguy' telling everyone that women are inherently evil because they won't have sex with me.
I'm a much better person now. I have a steady job I'm good at, people like to be around me and work with me (apparently I'm a calming presence), I see women for the people they are rather than as another species or something to be conquered.
I can't honestly say I'm proud of my sexual life. Sex isn't something you should be 'proud of', it just is. But at this moment in my life I am happy. Is that wrong do you think? Or is it more simply a sign that I'm truly lost to my own immorality?
I'll also ask; Did you have a knee-jerk reaction to the title of this post? And what was it? Was it along the lines of this quote from the recent BBC drama 'The Trial Of Christine Keeler'
" ...the fact you've had experiences these people can scarcely admit they envy only pours fuel on the roaring bonfire of your depravity,"
Or was it something else? I'd like to know what people think of my story.

2019.12.31 08:58 sehts_shadow Why I'm not a big fan of my LBGT+ irls.

Disclaimer: This does have themes about r*pe, sexual assault and suicide. The people I know in real life are... not too great.
For reference, I'm a straight white cis 16-year-old from Southern England. I'm atheist, like to draw, and play too many video games. Despite that, I have As and Bs in every subject, despite maths which is a C. This post does not mean I hate the LGBT community. Some of my long term friends have been LGBT, and I even considered myself part of the community at multiple times of my life.
I hate that I've known three trans male people growing up, both the same age as me. I'm still in school. As soon as we left primary school, one of my friends came out as non-binary, then bullied me into identifying as that as well because "straight cis woman are scary and bad". Then, two years later, they cut off their hair and say they're a guy, then get homeschooled because "I'm a horrible bully who is transphobic and hate lesbians"? I have a distinct memory of sitting in my room with this person, and them taking out a sharpener blade and saying "use it, you'll feel better." I was extremely hesitant about it, and they yelled at me. My mum was downstairs so to prevent her from yelling, I cut the top side of my right hand. Only a tiny cut, but it happened. We were about 12-13. I still have a minor scar from it now, even though it was minor (I have an impulse to bite or scrape and pick at scabs and healing wounds on my own body, hence the numerous small scars on my arms and legs.) This person however also fetishised also lesbians and r*pe. I could write an entire essay on why this person is such a terrible person but I've long since cut off contact with them, and last I heard they had attempted suicide. This was a year ago.
Another person who has possibly taken most strides to appear male as possible, again also my year group, is 15 almost 16, dating a 12-year-old. According to him, saying that a 12-year-old and 15-year-old dating is wrong is transphobic. My Health and Social Care teacher said that my country's law states that anyone under 13 years old is too young to consent to even a mouth-to-mouth kiss. It is considered sexual assault or r*pe. Especially if anything actually sexual is done between the two. Knowing a small portion of this transgender student's past, I believe it likely that they have done something sexually inappropriate for her age. Then later, another one of my friends comes out as a trans man, throws a tantrum when someone mistakenly uses female pronouns and then again gets homeschooled because my school "does not care about transgender students". We live in the UK. Our school runs support groups and writes notes to doctors for students who have said that they don't feel that they're their assigned birth gender or heterosexual.I don't hate transgender and transexual people. Hell, I'm subscribed to Blaire and my favourite artist is a trans man who has recently had his top surgery. I just hate when children (these people came out between 11-14 and started transitioning then) bully other people into becoming their identities too. My school has a religious minority since we're a Southern English school, and an ethnic minority. We don't have many people of colour enrolled here. We only recently (in the last two years) had lots of LGBT students enrol here. It ranges from 11 to 16-year-olds. We are too young to decide. Our brains are still developing. I'm the oldest in my year group and I still don't know who I am. When I was friends with the first trans person I spoke about, I was extremely confused with my sexuality and gender, going as far as to try and make binders out of old stretchy trousers and tights for myself, preventing myself from being able to breathe properly. I've also had many panic attacks and mental breakdowns simply over my long hair. I've fluctuated between calling myself a lesbian, bisexual and straight for years now, and still feel pressure to call myself bisexual because of the aura in my school. My friend group yells if I'm not a member of the LGBT community. I've fallen out with this friend group multiple times about preferring to date guys. And it's dumb. I wish I never knew those trans people to be honest - they gave me a negative outlook on the LGBT community. I'm not religious in any way, and I hate the ideals of religion for personal reasons. Everyone has their own reasons to identify as something. But I believe that trans people have to have dysphoria. These people I knew maybe did have dysphoria, I'm not a therapist or medical professional of any sort to know. I've known amazing LGBT people, and cherish my old friendships with them (or current friendships regarding people I've met online). But basically, I wish I never knew these people. They're horrible people, sometimes extremely selfish. Though they are also struggling with mental issues. The first and third person have both been diagnosed with autism, and I think that has a large part to play. I do not hate transgender people. I hate these transgender people. I do not hate anyone in the LGBT community. I hate people who say they're in the LGBT community for attention, fame, or to open the ability to get closer to younger people. I hate people who are in the LGBT community who say that being cis or straight is bad. I want these people I've spoken about to get help. I hope they get a councillor or therapist. I can't wait to get into College. Two of my subject's final exams start in January, and the rest are in June. Then I'm gone. Then I can cut off complete ties and never have to meet these people ever again. I honestly cannot wait.

2018.12.17 20:05 DoctorMTobogganMD There should be more nudity on American television

One of the best shows here in the UK is a dating show called naked attraction. Basically it goes like this, a lady or gentleman comes on. They're surrounded by 5 people hidden behind screens. The screens are gradually raised up revealing firstly the naked half of the person's body. They inspect the genitals and arses of everyone, have a chat with the host about what kind of willies and vaginas they like and then eliminate the one they like the least. Then the screens are raised further exposing the breasts (if female) or bare chest if male and they have another wander around with the host discussing their naked bodies before eliminating someone else. Then the screens are fully raised and they eliminate someone else. At this point the person doing the choosing nips backstage, and pops back also in the buff before having a close up inspection of the last two people before choosing their date. It's quite nice because every time someone is eliminated they walk offstage with the camera following giving a really nice view of their bottoms. Also these are really normal people of all shapes and sizes, with body modifications or not, short, tall, thin, overweight and sometimes it's guys picking girls or vice versa or guys picking guys or girls picking girls. One time it was a couple picking a girl to join their polyamorous living situation. Other times there's transexual or disabled contestants. So it's actually a really progressive show with something for everyone. There is absolutely no blurring or censorship you get to see everything.
So it's really quite enjoyable to watch and I just think it's such a shame that in America there is so much prudishness about the naked human form, even though this is our natural state, and it's really difficult to find uncensored nudity on American television. I mean does it really hurt anyone?

2017.11.24 20:13 woop_boop Fact checking the 5v1 [Long] (ft. arguments from Lauren Southern, Roaming Millennial, Theryn Meyer, Nicholas Fuentes, and NoBullshit)

Some people on Twitter have problems with some of my points. I invite you to leave a comment; I respond to criticism, even 22 days later.

This is a long 15 minute read, but since Steven's points seem to echo across the skeptosphere, I wanted to be thorough. I'll acknowledge when the skeptics make legitimate points; this will not be a circlejerk. I'm also going to ignore Fuentes's points that are addressed in Steven's document.
The focus will be on the US since every participant was either American or Canadian. The European statistics will invariably differ significantly from American ones. However, since each participant's audience is probably American/Canadian, arguing about the statistics and policies of Europe is about as silly as arguing about the statistics and policies of South Korea or Indonesia. Was the 5v1 discussing American Black crime or European Black crime? The tendency of American Asians to form enclaves or European Asians? Silliness. The elephant in the room is terrorism, so let's address that:
Member States reported that 142 victims died as a result of terrorist attacks and 379 people were injured [for 2017]. Nearly all reported fatalities and most of the casualties were the result of jihadist terrorist attacks. The EU's Terrorism Situation and Trend Report, 2017.
The largest number of attacks in which the terrorist affiliation could be identified were carried out by ethno-nationalist and separatist extremists (99).
which is distinct from
The number of jihadist terrorist attacks decreased from 17 in 2015 to 13 in 2016, of which 6 were linked to the so-called Islamic State (IS).
In the US:
From September 12, 2001 through December 31, 2016, attacks by domestic or “homegrown” violent extremists in the US resulted in 225 fatalities... Of these, 106 were killed by far right violent extremists in 62 separate incidents, and 119 were victims of radical Islamist violent extremists in 23 separate incidents... activities of far left wing violent extremist groups did not result in any fatalities during this period. US Government Accountability Office.
In both the EU and the US, there are more occurrences of domestic terrorism, though the Islamic attacks cause more deaths. The remainder of this post (unless otherwise specified) will be US oriented.

(0:08:11) (0:27:23) Bonnell: What is American culture? What do immigrants need to integrate into?

What is beauty? Smooth skin? A setting sun? A soaring cello? Beauty exists, though it's hard to define. So does culture. I'll repeat this post's tldr:
My big point is just flat out denying the existence american culture is wrong and that it hurts your case.
Regardless, I think people care more about immigrants' values than culture. Few get kerfuffled over hummus; more get testicletwisted over veils. So here are some values:
Nearly three-quarters (74%) of Muslim Americans endorse the idea that most people can get ahead if they are willing to work hard; just 26% say hard work is no guarantee of success. Among the general public, somewhat fewer (62%) say that most people who work hard can get ahead. Pew.

In sharp contrast with Americans who identify themselves with other faith groups, Muslim Americans are more likely to say military attacks on civilians are never justified (78%) than sometimes justified (21%). Respondents from other faith groups, particularly Mormon Americans, are more likely to say military attacks are sometimes justified than never justified. Gallup

While there is widespread agreement on these core tenets of Islam, most US Muslims (57%) also say there is more than one true way to interpret the teachings of Islam; far fewer (37%) say there is only one true interpretation of Islam. Compared with the US population as a whole, more Muslims say there is only one true way to interpret their faith; among all Americans affiliated with a religion, 27% say there is just one true way to interpret their own faith. Pew

(0:09:40) Southern: The difference between my views and Muslims is choice. Muslims stone.

The countries that permit stoning are indeed majority Muslim. However, since the topic is literally "the future that each individual in this conversation wants to see for western civilization", the civilization of the middle east is irrelevant. It could be argued that middle eastern culture is influencing western culture, but that has not been demonstrated in America; quite the opposite, according to Pew and the Cato Institute.
The biggest "choice" issue today is abortion. Muslims and Catholics share similar views on legalizing abortion. Specifying stoning when talking about choice in western civilization is... hilarious.

(0:10:41) Fuentes: Somalis are causing problems in Minnesota

There are indeed violent Somali gangs in Minnesota. However, any large population of demographic will cause problems. Italian-American crime is still alive and well in the Mafia. A better question is if Somalis are causing disproportionate crime; sadly there's no statistics on that. However, since the influx of Somali immigrants to Minneapolis began, the violent crime rate has gone down. It isn't proof, but it does go against Fuentes's narrative.
More in line with Fuentes's narrative is how Somalis "have the lowest median household income among immigrant and minority groups in Minnesota, as well as the lowest rates of educational attainment and home ownership." Also, 9 Somalis were convicted of plotting to join ISIS. As context, 250+ Americans have joined ISIS, with "only several dozen" being arrested.

(0:09:00) (0:28:56) (0:30:14) Millennial: Muslims don't respect freedom of religion, women's rights, rights of gays/transexuals, women's sufferage; Muslims think women are the property of their husbands, that child brides and honor killings are acceptable, and that women can be blamed for rape.

█ Freedom of religion
In Iowa:
Only 49% of Republicans think the religion of Islam should even be legal in the US with 30% saying it shouldn’t be and 21% not sure. Among Trump voters there is almost even division with 38% thinking Islam should be allowed and 36% that it should not. Public Policy Polling
In North Carolina:
With Trump voters the numbers are even more extreme - 52% think Islam should be illegal to just 31% that believe it should be allowed. Republican voters in the state as a whole are evenly divided with 40% thinking the practice of Islam should be legal and 40% thinking it should not. Public Policy Polling
In New Hampshire:
Ann Coulter challenged us a couple weeks ago after we did polling finding that many Republicans don't even think Islam should be legal to see how many Democrats think Christianity should be legal. We found that 90% of New Hampshire Democrats think Christianity should be legal, while only 58% of New Hampshire Republicans think Islam should be legal. Public Policy Polling
Americans place a higher priority on preserving the religious freedom of Christians than for other faith groups, ranking Muslims as the least deserving of the protections... 82% said religious liberty protections were important for Christians, compared with 61% who said the same for Muslims. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Despite believing that they are often the victims of intolerance, Americans who practice Islam are among the most tolerant of US faith groups studied. Muslim Americans’ combined integration tolerance scores — a measure of their appreciation for religious pluralism — are higher than those of Protestant Americans, Catholic Americans, and Jewish Americans and are matched only by those of Mormon Americans. Gallup.

...more than two-thirds of Americans (69%) agree with the notion that “liberals have gone too far in trying to keep religion out of the schools and the government.” Pew.

...almost half of Americans (46%) say the Bible must be one of the sources of legislation, and 9% believe it must be the only source. Gallup.
█ Women's rights
This is poorly defined, but the hottest women's rights issue is abortion, so: 37% of American Muslims think abortion should be illegal; 47% Catholics, 63% Evangelical Protestants, 75% Jehovah's Witness, 70% Mormons, and 45% Orthodox Christians think it should be illegal. Pew.
█ Gay/transexual rights
About half of US Muslims say homosexuality should be accepted by society (52%), while 33% say homosexuality should be discouraged. Pew.
34% of white evangelicals, 76% white Protestant, 50% of black Protestant, and 66% of Catholics say the same.
█ Women's sufferage
There is only one country where women can't vote: Vatican City. This is because women can't be cardinals - the only people allowed to vote.
█ Women are not the property of their husbands, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Must a wife always obey her Christian husband?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "The Bible commands a husband to love his wife as Christ loved the Church and the wife is to obey her husband." Out of 4,600 Christians surveyed, 46% believed that a wife should always obey her Christian husband.

The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination and an increasingly conservative force among American religious organizations, amended its essential statement of beliefs today to include a declaration that a woman should ''submit herself graciously'' to her husband's leadership and that a husband should ''provide for, protect and lead his family.'' NYT.
I was unable to find US specific numbers, but a global survey of Evangelical Protestant leaders found that 55% of them agreed with "a wife must always obey her husband." In comparison, 34% - 96% of Muslims from various countries agreed.
█ Child brides are not acceptable
248,000 children were married between 2000-2010 in the US. Chris Christie wrote this when he vetoed a law banning underage marriage:
An exclusion without exceptions would violate the cultures and traditions of some communities in New Jersey based on religious traditions.
I wonder whose religious traditions he's talking about.
New Hampshire legislators voted no, and Maryland legislators let the bill [banning underage marriage] die, twice. Legislators in New York, Virginia, Texas and Connecticut passed weaker bills that still allow marriage before 18. CNN.
█ Honor killings are not acceptable/women should not be blamed for rape
1638 women were murdered by their partner in 2007. The best estimate (and there's little hard data backing this) is 23-27 honor killings per year.
Muslims do not experience more intimate partner violence than non-Muslims. A thesis from Boston College.

It is widely accepted by abuse experts (and validated by numerous studies) that one fourth to one third of North American women will be assaulted by an intimate partner in their life time and that evangelical men who sporadically attend church are more likely than men of any other religious group (and more likely than secular men) to assault their wives. Trinity Journal.
My sources are shaky so I await Millennial's source on American Muslim women being blamed for raped (more than your average American women, anyway) or honor killed.

(0:14:40) Meyer: Asians form enclaves and don't integrate.

(0:30:25) Bonnell: It's unclear that it's an American value to not blame a woman for rape. See: Hollywood.

Bonnell makes an interesting point, but if he wishes to convince people he needs to take a more nuanced stance than this.

(0:31:50) Southern: Society rejects rapists; within Islamic culture that's not in the law or popular culture.

Victim blaming occurs in American culture even when the other party has been proven guilty. See also: slut shaming.
If Southern thinks Islam doesn't reject rapists, then I'll refer her to the wiki. If she thinks American Muslim culture doesn't reject rapists, I'll need a source.

(0:32:39) Bonnell: A woman can't say no to her boss if he propositions her for sex.

Again, charity must be employed to understand Bonnell: A woman can certainly say no; however her freedom to say no has been impinged upon. He should be more careful with his words.

(0:39:54) (0:43:15) (0:46:47) Skeptics: Studies show women are happier and more fulfilled staying at home with the kids.

On aggregate, parents often report statistically significantly lower levels of happiness (Alesina et al., 2004), life satisfaction (Di Tella et al., 2003), marital satisfaction (Twenge et al., 2003), and mental well-being (Clark & Oswald, 2002) compared with non-parents. The British Psychological Society.

Parents report significantly higher levels of depression than nonparents... persons at the stage of the life course when they are residing with their minor children report significantly more depression than their childless peers. Journal of Health and Social Behavior.

It may ultimately be rewarding:
We show that some activities relatively low in pleasure (e.g., work and time with children) are nonetheless thought of as rewarding and therefore contribute to overall subjective well-being. Association for Psychological Science.
But not always:
...older parents whose children have left home report the same or slightly less happiness than non-parents of similar age and status. Thus, what these results are suggesting is something very controversial — that having children does not bring joy to our lives. The British Psychological Society.

A study found contrary evidence:
Contrary to much of the literature, our results are consistent with an effect of children on life satisfaction that is positive, large and increasing in the number of children.
But was discovered to be flawed:
The author has uncovered an important coding mistake in the dataset... The effect of children on the life satisfaction of married individuals is small, often negative, and never statistically significant. Journal of Happiness Studies.

Social policies and welfare can help:
the US has the largest happiness shortfall among parents compared to nonparents, significantly larger than the gap found in Great Britain and Australia... The negative effects of parenthood on happiness were entirely explained by the presence or absence of social policies allowing parents to better combine paid work with family obligations. And this was true for both mothers and fathers. Countries with better family policy “packages” had no happiness gap between parents and non-parents. Council on Contemporary Families.

The small effect size and primarily nonsignificant results for main effects of early maternal employment should allay concerns about mothers working when children are young. However, negative findings associated with employment during the child's first year are compatible with calls for more generous maternal leave policies. Psychological Bulletin.
This study covered the OECD countries, which includes the US and Canada:
An expansion in the welfare state increases fertility, marriage, and divorce rates with a quantitatively stronger effect on the marriage rate. We conclude that the welfare state supports family formation in the aggregate. The Scandinavian Journal of Economics.
So let people choose:
Our results demonstrate that neither employment nor non-employment is best for all mothers of young children; rather mental health depends on mothers’ employment preferences and, when they do work for pay, job quality. Journal of Family and Economic Issues.

…most previous literature has concluded that those with children have worse lives… With statistical controls for these background factors, the presence of a child has a small negative association with life evaluation, although it is associated with more of both positive and negative hedonics… Most people think of their children as making their lives better. Yet many studies have found that those without children value their lives more than those with children... Interpreting such results requires that we think about who chooses to be a parent. If parents choose to be parents, and nonparents choose to be nonparents, there is no reason to expect that one group will be better or worse off than the other once other circumstances are controlled. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

However, choosing itself may be an factor:
But the abundance of choices—whether to have kids, when, how many—may be one of the reasons parents are less happy. That was at least partly the conclusion of psychologists W. Keith Campbell and Jean Twenge, who, in 2003, did a meta-analysis of 97 children-and-marital-satisfaction studies stretching back to the seventies. Not only did they find that couples’ overall marital satisfaction went down if they had kids; they found that every successive generation was more put out by having them than the last—our current one most of all. Even more surprisingly, they found that parents’ dissatisfaction only grew the more money they had, even though they had the purchasing power to buy more child care. “And my hypothesis about why this is, in both cases, is the same,” says Twenge. “They become parents later in life. There’s a loss of freedom, a loss of autonomy. It’s totally different from going from your parents’ house to immediately having a baby. Now you know what you’re giving up.” NYmag
Southern, children are gonna take time away from your politics.

(0:45:20) Skeptics: There's nothing wrong with excessive bullying to move culture, as long as there's no threat of violence.

Do the skeptics agree with Ben Shapiro, who wrote a book criticizing the left for their bullying in 2013?
Also, recall this quote from before:
106 were killed by far right violent extremists in 62 separate incidents... activities of far left wing violent extremist groups did not result in any fatalities. US Government Accountability Office

(0:53:00) Millennial: Women are more promiscuous due to the availability of abortion

Contrasting 1988–1996 waves of the General Social Survey with 2004–2012 waves, we found respondents from the current era did not report more sexual partners since age 18, more frequent sex, or more partners during the past year than respondents from the earlier era. Sexually active respondents from the current era were more likely than those from the earlier era to report sex with a casual date/pickup or friend, and less likely to report sex with a spouse/regular partner. These modest changes are consistent with cultural shifts in the ‘‘scripts’’ and terminology surrounding sexuality. We find no evidence of substantial changes in sexual behavior that would indicate a new or pervasive pattern of non-relational sex among contemporary college students...
The National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a study of students in public and private high schools throughout the US, shows a decline in a range of sexual behaviors, including sexual intercourse, from 1991 to 2001 and little change since that time. The National Survey of Family Growth shows declining rates of sexual intercourse among men and women aged 15 to 24. Journal of Sex Research.

The national abortion rate has resumed its decline, and no evidence was found that the overall drop in abortion incidence was related to the decrease in providers or to restrictions implemented between 2008 and 2011... In 2011, there were 1.06 million abortions, and the abortion rate was 16.9 per 1,000 women aged 15–44. This is the lowest rate since 1973. Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

(0:55:00) Millennial: The welfare state and abortion have destroyed the nuclear family

We find that welfare participation reduces the likelihood of transitioning to marriage, but only while the mother is receiving benefits. Once the mother leaves welfare, past receipt has little effect on marriage. We infer that the negative association between welfare participation and subsequent marriage reflects temporary economic disincentives rather than an erosion of values. Journal of Marriage and Family.
But is welfare temporary? 62.9% of recipients get off Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (the form of welfare used in the above study) in under a year; 90.2% in under 3 years. US Census. There's a hard cap of 60 months on TANF benefits anyway.
Our overall conclusions are that the policy changes of the 1990s reduced caseloads, but also increased income, reduced poverty, and reduced female headship. The waivers of the early 1990s also appeared to increase work behavior, and increased marriage. Journal of Policy Analysis and Management.

The results provide no evidence that welfare raises the propensity to form female-headed households for either whites or blacks. Journal of Public Economics.

Our results regarding single parenthood confirm those of much of the earlier literature: welfare benefits seem not to be an important motivator for young women to have children out of wedlock. The Journal of Human Resources
A paper acknowledged the theoretical problem:
the program provides an obvious incentive to delay marriage, increase rates of marital dissolution, delay remarriage, and have children outside of a marital union, all of which will lower the percentage of the population that is married.
But debunks it in the conclusion:
Thus the welfare system does not appear to be capable of explaining most of the long-term trend or any of the recent trend of increasing numbers of female-headed families in the US. Journal of Economic Literature

(0:59:30) Fuentes: The only institutional discrimination on the books/in written code is against white people

I can't find evidence for this. Here is the OFCCP's guide for Small Businesses with Federal Contracts. No mention of whites, only minorities. (If trends continue, whites will be a minority.) It is commonly thought that affirmative action's purpose is to give a leg up to members of groups that had been kept down by historic discrimination. This is false:
Bakke was binding precedent establishing diversity as a compelling state interest... The Law School's narrowly tailored use of race in admissions decisions to further a compelling interest in obtaining the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body is not prohibited by the Equal Protection Clause. Grutter v. Bollinger syllabus.
White people add to the diversity of a campus. Bonus meme: affirmative action currently favors men.
In recent years, more and more colleges —especially liberal arts institutions— have expressed concern about the difficulty of attracting male applicants and students. And some college officials have —controversially— suggested admitting male applicants with lower grades or test scores. Just over 11% of those at four-year colleges and universities said that was their practice, with the figures highest at baccalaureate institutions. The percentage of four-year colleges reporting that women are admitted with lower grades and test scores is much smaller -- under 3%. Inside Higher Ed.

The US Commission on Civil Rights opened an investigation to see if women were being discriminated against; it was ended without findings or a definitive conclusion. Women may have benefitted from affirmative action in the past, but no longer.
Super bonus meme: universities already favor whites via legacy admissions and full-pay students. Also, "25% of college admissions officials said they are pressured to admit low-quality students because of their connections", even after the scandals at Illinois and Texas. I doubt black students are well connected.

(1:03:00) Millennial: The bias is against low class names

The abstract of Are Emily and Greg more employable than Lakisha and Jamal? itself address this:
We find little evidence that our results are driven by employers inferring something other than race, such as social class, from the names. The American Economic Review.
Another study also controlled for "low class" names:
We randomly assigned names to the resumes that convey race and gender but for which a strong socio-economic connotation is not implicated. We find little evidence of systematic employer preferences for applicants from particular race and gender groups. Applied Economics Letters.
...but the author admits a significant flaw:
The resumes from the fictional black applicants bore the last names Washington and Jefferson... Though 90% of people with the last name Washington are black and 75% of those named Jefferson are black, "there is the fair criticism that maybe no one knows that," Koedel said. The first names likely didn't help strengthen the connection. Megan and Brian were used for the white candidates, and Chloe and Ryan for the black candidates. The Chicago Tribune

A professor's blog explored the socioeconomic status interpretations of white/black names further. He also had a post that explored using names to indicate race in studies.
Some studies played with names to uncover systemic discrimination: 1 2 3.
This study examined whether racial discrimination exists in access to public services in the US:
We find that emails from putatively black senders are almost 4 percentage points less likely to receive an answer compared to emails signed with a white sounding name. Moreover, responses to queries coming from black names are less likely to have a cordial tone. Further tests suggest that the differential in the likelihood of answering is due to animus towards blacks rather than inferring socioeconomic status from race. Journal of the European Economic Association.
Avoiding names, a paper studied
...the effect of race on market outcomes by selling iPods through local online classified advertisements throughout the US in a year-long field experiment. Each ad features a photograph of the product being held by a dark- or light-skinned hand... Black sellers do worse than white sellers on a variety of market outcome measures: they receive 13% fewer responses and 17% fewer offers... Conditional on receiving at least one offer, black sellers also receive 2–4% lower offers, despite the selfselected—and presumably less biased—pool of buyers. In addition, buyers corresponding with black sellers exhibit lower trust: they are 17% less likely to include their name in e-mails, 44% less likely to accept delivery by mail, and 56% more likely to express concern about making a long-distance payment. The Economic Journal.

(1:06:25) Southern: There's legal discrimination against hiring whites for government jobs.

...the majority of the studies in the set that utilized quantitative data on marketplace discrimination found that minorities and minority business enterprises (MBE):
  • Earned significantly lower wages than similarly situated non-minority male counterparts in relevant markets;
  • Had significantly lower business earnings than similarly situated non-MBEs in relevant markets;
  • Had lower rates of business formation than non-minority males;
  • Were more likely to be denied commercial or personal loans than similarly situated nonminority males or non-MBEs; and
  • Had lower revenues and market shares than similarly situated non-MBEs.
Minority Business Development Agency, Department of Commerce.

Overall we find that the odds of winning a contract for Woman-Owned Businesses (WOBs) are estimated to be roughly 21% lower relative to the odds of winning contracts by otherwise similar firms that were not identified as WOBs. In our analysis, we control for... [all kinds of shit.] Department of Commerce

Overall, we found extensive evidence that discrimination on the basis of race and gender continues to operate in Missouri’s markets and that disparities exist between the availability of M/WBEs and their utilization on state contracts and associated subcontracts, as well as throughout the wider Missouri economy. State of Missouri Office of Administration
Positive feedback loops develop without affirmative action. For example, white children who grow up in households with socioeconomic advantages will have a better education, which leads to better jobs, which leads to higher income, which leads to white children who grow up in households with socioeconomic advantages... A color blind system will only perpetuate the cycle of inequality. If the skeptics have a better way to bust feedback loops, let me know!

(1:07:30) Fuentes: The criminal justice system isn't racist

Consistent with its previous reports, the Commission found that sentence length continues to be associated with some demographic factors. In particular, after controlling for a wide variety of sentencing factors, the Commission found: Black male offenders continued to receive longer sentences than similarly situated White male offenders. Black male offenders received sentences on average 19.1% longer than similarly situated White male offenders... US Sentencing Commission.

The prevalence of drug use is only slightly higher among blacks than whites for some illicit drugs and slightly lower for others; the difference is not substantial. There is also little evidence, when all drug types are considered, that blacks sell drugs more often than whites... drug-related arrest rates for blacks have been three to four times higher than those for whites. National Academy of Sciences.

The almost unbridled decision making power afforded to bail officials is often influenced by improper considerations such as the defendant’s financial resources or the race of the defendant. As a result of these failures, the bail determination process has resulted not only in racial inequalities in bail and pretrial detention decisions, but also in the over-incarceration of pretrial defendants. Legislation and Public Policy.

Young black and Hispanic male [drivers] are at increased risk for citations, searches, arrests, and uses of force after other extralegal and legal characteristics are controlled. Additional analyses show that minority drivers are not, however, more likely to be carrying contraband than are white drivers. Justice Quarterly.

Does Southern think gays are unnatural? Is oral/anal/non-child-producing sexual activity unnatural?

2014.06.02 17:41 heroathome need advice on my kids relationship

My Kid has been dropping one bombshell after another and i need help. I'm a Military veteran(retired) and my kid is serving on active duty now. We got a text this weekend that she and her bf for 3 weeks are engaged and plan on getting married. They are overseas, and i am losing my mind. it has nothing to do with the main bombshell (he is a preop transexual, identifies as female) but more to do with the fact he has never had a job, is on the dole, was in a relationship with a man that just started in march, and has the whole military watching my daughte, a senior enlisted called me at work with a report of this guy hitting my daughter. I want to do a simple background check but don't know how to start that when someone lives in the UK. I'm honestly so tired right now. I tried to reach out to her fiancee but i used the phrase man to man, and now everyone is angry. I'm just looking out for her, i know it's her life but i just want clarity. for the sake of confusion i will continue in this conversaition to call him "him" and my daughter "her". this guy has yet to answer me at all. if i ask a question i get an angry text from my daughter. My questions have been "did you hit my daughter?' "how have you been dating my daughter for 3 months when you were in a relationship with another man 2 months ago?" "have you ever had a job?" i know it's a bit invasive but honestly i answered far more and worse when i dated any girl. they hide behind the fact that they claim everyone is against it because of gender issues, but it's not! there are so many warning flags, even a few that would make any military type worry about opsec. does anyone know a few good sites to do criminal checks in england? I feel like the only sane person in crazy town. I expect a lot of it's her life type comments, i know. my main job is to catch her IF she falls, but if i can keep her from making a huge disasterous mistake that could lead to jail time shouldn't i?

Questions Answers
I've always wanted to go to Phuket, it looks like they have beautiful beaches! Are they as nice as they look? I've seen news reports of political unrest, mostly in Bangkok. Do you think it is fairly safe to travel there now? While I wouldn't be interested in training for MMA (I'm old lol) I would enjoy watching some fights and have seen some online videos of matches between all ages and abilities. Are these matches fairly common. accessible and safe to attend. What is one thing everyone should do in Phuket that they might not know about? The beaches are really nice, the scuba diving is great too. I think it's safe to travel there, Bangkok was a bit much for me though, I only spent a few nights there it was too crazy, partying with foreigners from ireland and australia and england and shit. There's some islands around phuket that have fights, but mostly locals hear about those, but there is a large stadium near Bangla Rd in phuket near the mall that has fights multiple days a week, but it's muay thai only, they're completely safe to attend, fighting in thailand out of anger is very frowned upon especially with professional fighting being such a part of their culture, and the thai people are generally very kind, but if you go to a market to buy anything just cut the price they tell you in half, they do need to make money remember that, they won't cut the price of anything at a retail store of course, and if they're selling food if it doesn't sound outrageous don't barter food items as those are usually very cheap anyways and they most likely won't budge at all. same goes for "legit" massages. I would definitely go SCUBA diving I can give you a link to a guy from england that's really good and has competitive rates. also make sure you get a soapie, they aren't cheap, but VERY worth it, even if just for the experience, I know a few good places like christin's just off of bangla rd. Tip the mamasan or papasan about 1,000 baht or 500 depending on how much they go down on price, and if the girl was good, 1,000BHT.
What's a soapie? Naked massage, you get in a bathtub with a girl, she massages you while you're both naked, you get out and on an inflatable mattress and she throws hot bubbly water on you and grinds on you with her body for awhile, then she dries you off, put on a condom and go to town.
Whaaat?! that sounds amazing! LOL yeah man.
Soapie or Nuru? Soapie.
Hey did you have any MMA experience prior to going to Thailand? How did you go about getting to Thailand to train in MMA? I had some growing up and through the Army, but nothing like an actual training camp. I was in Thailand and saw a Muay Thai fight, I was only there for two weeks. A few months later I decided to go back and learn Muay Thai and MMA at the camps the military contractors always talk about. So I looked one up online and read a bunch of reviews and decided on Phuket Top Team instead of Tiger Muay Thai. REALLY glad too. I booked the flights, traveling there I already knew what to do. Book your flight to bangkok, then book a local airline flight to phuket for a few hours later, then just grab a taxi to the camp once you land. They're all outside waiting trying to get fares. Then I got there, bought all my equipment, which is expensive BTW. At the least bring 2 sets of 180" Mexican hand wraps. Then I just bought a room and paid for the gym and that's it. You can show up to whatever class you want too, but if you really want the best training make sure you show up to every class for whatever you're there for. Trainers like to see somebody who tries and cares about learning it, so they'll care more about your training.
Is it true how dangerous it is to do drugs there? How risky is smoking weed really? Smoking weed there isn't dangerous at all. Just ask some locals, someone tried to sell me weed while I was on the back of a taxi once and he was driving a scooter. You can also find any drug you want there. Also someone tried to sell me heroin on Bangla Rd. But that was only once. Ask a local or a foreigner that's been there awhile where the "happy shakes" are... It's shrooms mixed into a milkshake... Full moon party has them and there are a few in Phuket near Bangla Rd.
Edit: Tried to sell ME heroin, not sell my heroin.
Thought that sounded abit questionable, i was told weed had the same consequences as any a class drug and you could spend time in a thai jail for even a small amount. Guess they would be trying to get a bribe? You can bride the police to overlook almost anything minor, besides serious assault, rape or anything like that. But they know how much foreigners have so it isn't cheap, but it's better than going to jail. I've never seen a foreigner get arrested though. Just use weed like you would any other drug. Inside your room with friends before you go outside, nobody will bother you.
How do you go about bribing someone? is there some sort of etiquette involved? You'd have to be a moron to ever get into a situation where you'd have to bribe a police officer. The Thai people are buddhist and are generally extremely nice. But like any other place in the world the wrong parts can be dangerous. But if you did, hopefully the cop will be in the mood to take a bribe, sometimes they won't be. Just ask "how much?" he probably won't give you a number, then just give him whatever is in your wallet. Hopefully he will take it. If not see if they'll go to an ATM with you and you can get more. 3,000 BAHT is about $100 USD for reference. If they don't arrest you immediately they probably are looking for a bribe.
A friend of mine actually did get arrested in Chiang Mai for weed.. sat there for 3 days before giving the guard a bribe and then walking out. He said it wasn't bad enough to make him want to move back to the US though. Yeah it's don't be stupid and you're fine kind of thing. Obviously don't carry it around and keep it in your room. But the SCUBA guys smoke all the time they've never gotten in any trouble.
Yea wasn't planning on getting in that situation but you never know..on a side note, whats the mma scene in thailand like? obviously they muay thai is excelent but is jiu jitsu big over there? Would be good to see some of the thai fighters dominating in the ufc! In Phuket, and Bangkok MMA is large, not so much in Chang Mai, that place is very Muay Thai oriented. I got some Jiu Jitsu training from Olavo Abreu a world champion BJJ black belt. He is from brazil and is honestly one of the best professors I've worked with. Near Bangla Rd, the main rd for partying in Phuket there is a Muay Thai stadium where local gyms send their fighters foreign and local to fight. There are also local islands and on the beach that host BJJ tournaments and MMA fights. So it's very large over there. You may not see many Thai people in the UFC, they like most asians are small and they can make money locally with OneFC and the asian MMA companies instead of moving to america for UFC.
off, what's a soapie? Second, me and a group of friends are going to Thailand mid January, tell me more about this full moon party... > Naked massage, you get in a bathtub with a girl, she massages you while you're both naked, you get out and on an inflatable mattress and she throws hot bubbly water on you and grinds on you with her body for awhile, then she dries you off, put on a condom and go to town.
The full moon party is a huge party on the beach, alcohol is cheap if you buy locally and foreign and local women are everywhere. Look up some videos on youtube. If you decide to go, book a room on the island a few weeks ahead of time. If you don't book you might not get a room, My friend and I searched for 2 hours before we found a room, it was terrible. Also plan to leave the next night or the morning after. say you party on friday, plan on leaving saturday night or sunday morning. You'll be too wasted to do anything the next morning. There's a place there that you can book a boat to get you to phuket after the full moon party, then a bus ride. Or just hop a boat back to the airport and take a flight out to phuket, which should be booked in advanced. Koh Phangan is the party and Koh Samui is the airport. Also happy shakes in the far left bar built into the side of the mountain if you look out to the ocean.
Happy shakes? Mushroom milkshakes!!
Wait, like SHROOM shakes, or just regular mushrooms? Shroom shakes real shrooms
What kind of MA did you mainly train? My guess is you would have trained some kind of thaiboxing combined with wrestling? I did Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) and brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Wasn't it hard getting the technique good in the kicks? I've heard you've to start at a fairly young age to get decent kicks? I can kick fairly well, the hardest part for me was learning to kick with my non-dominant leg as fluidly as my dominant. It still feels really awkward. But you know you're kicking good when the trainers get louder and louder and egg you on more and more.
In going to Bangkok next month. Where can I go to watch some good mma? In Bangkok I'm not sure, but you can google it or ask a local when you get there.
I know tourists have a reputation of going to Thailand for underage prostitution. On your way there, did you see any really creepy shady looking guys? Was it an obvious problem when you were there, or is it exaggerated? I've never seen any underage prostitutes, but I also didn't look for any. There's old guys there, some married some aren't. Some people even bring their children for some stupid reason. I think it's WAY over exaggerated. Just something to give news people something to talk about. Just how they over exaggerate how a community was "held hostage" by it's rampant drug problem. When in reality it was nothing like that. If you wanted that stuff (not saying you do) you'd have to go to pattaya probably, which I would never go there. Too dangerous for my liking.
Nobody who is rich in Thailand is serving people anything lol. I don't mean lives in a mansion rich jesus christ people.
Stop reading at rich girl working in hooker bar for 200$ a Month. Delusional Kk.
Can you walk us through some of the conditioning done by the Thai fighters? Is it more or less the same for the pros and up and comers? Also, is it a daily ritual for them? They run every morning, and do a lot of skipping. Their training isn't much different than ours. Just a lot more intense. Not much weight lifting, mostly body weight stuff. Situps are a HUGE part of the curriculum since core strength has a lot to do with almost every part of thai fighting from punching to kicking to taking a hit. It isn't a huge ritual for them no, when they get into the ring they have a dance they do, but aside from that, just sparring in the ring there's nothing special about it, they just get in like anyone else.
What was your training routine each day? Did you shadow box? Does it actually help you in improving? What's your opinion on the sexual industry, as a whole, of Thailand? Wake up at 6:45 or earlier if I wanted to run, get to the gym and start class at 7:00 with 10 minutes of jump rope, or jumping on a tire. Then run around in circles while loosening our legs and arms, then stretch our warmed up muscles out with some Yoga type shit. After that we'd wrap hands, half the class would get with an instructor individually, 1 instructor per student, the other half would practice on the plethora of punching bags. Usually with an instructor or (Kru) walking around critiquing everyone on form and what have you. Then every few minutes we'd do pushups then keep going, after 25-30 mins we switch the class so those with instructors practice on bags now and vice versa. At the end of class they want you to finish with 200-300 sit-ups. Core strength is huge in Muay Thai, directly relating to kick power and ability to take a hit. The class would switch daily from that to group exercises like dodging a straight then transition into a kick and more complex things, and sparring with each other with mouth guards. After morning session I'd head to Tony's and get breakfast for like 120BHT or Mama's if I was really tired because it was closer to my room. I usually ate 2 pieces of toast, Musoli fruit and yogurt basically a Parfait. With eggs bacon, coconut and a bottle of water I brought. Then I'd take a shower, nap for an hour or so. Put my Jiu jitsu stuff on and head back to the gym for my jits session. Won't go into super detail about that, but it was extremely physically taxing, like you would expect from jiu jitsu. once that was over I'd hang out with guys from other countries while stretching or practicing by myself outside with the bags, another guy at the gym, or maybe a private session with one of the Thai boxing instructors. I'd head back to my room, take another shower and change into another set of thai shorts and head back for the second muay thai session of the day. Repeat as before with said variables. Then take a shower at the gym for the third time. Head over and get a massage across the street get dinner and head home for the night. Being exhausted as a motherfucker I didn't go out much during the week. There's also another Jiu Jitsu class after the second muay thai but I never went because I felt like I was going to die from exhaustion. Basically repeated that for a couple months. Shadowboxing I think helps in certain areas, mostly makes you more self aware of your own movements, typically if you practice on a person you're too focused on hitting them or not getting hit that you don't pay attention to your footwork or anything. If you stand and watch people sparring or practicing on a bag, they need look at their feet. As soon as a group of 25 people start shadowboxing their heads immediately go to the ground. So you're more aware of what your body is doing wrong instead of practicing on reflex like you would with a partner. You should basically be fighting like you shadowbox, as if nothing was there. If you kick while shadow boxing you should spin around completely. If you never practice this and only do so with a partner, once a real fighter backsteps out of the way of your kick then what? You won't have any idea how to balance all the way through and reset yourself. Especially with spinning elbows too, people sometimes rely on hitting their opponent to counteract their spin to regain balance, but what if that opponent moves or it glances. All your moves should be done as if there's nobody there. You can really tell this on one of john bones jones fights where he does a spinning elbow and misses it. He stumbles around because he expected it to hit and catch himself. Not saying I'm better than bones jones by any means of course. So onto the sex industry. Some people in this ama have been saying some really odd things. Like every woman in a club is a prostitute and there's no such thing as a regular girl in thailand that wants to get laid. Which is obviously stupid, because that's impossible. I've never myself seen any underage prostitution, but I didn't go looking for it either so that's up to the individual. Bar girls can be had for cheap during off-season, Always wear a condom. Buy alcohol at 7/11 to pre-game. Girls in clubs like white guys, and don't underestimate your ability to fuck a random white girl that's with her friends, because asian women are a dime a dozen and the white girls get passed up because nobody wants to fuck them in a country that has women guys don't see everyday. Case in point I didn't want to fuck a white girl at all because shit I can get that here in the states. But then I realized how easy it actually was because they're deprived of attention, and if you know how they get when they aren't the center of someone's universe. They just want SOMEONE to fuck them and make them feel wanted, BE THAT GUY. Don't carry weed around with you. If you do keep it in your scooter or something and smoke it ASAP, but not in public, in a hotel room balcony or something. If you have any other questions I'll be glad to answer them.
What's your UG handle? Also, if you ever run into Junie Browning will you slap the shit out if him for me? UG handle? and that name actually sounds familiar, Junie...
By how to get laid I assume you mean with girls other than transexual prostitutes? Being Thailand and all... The ladyboys usually grab you if they want to take you home, just laugh and keep walking... They're strong btw. Unless you're into that sort of thing you can just go with it.
I take it this doesn't happen with the nice Thai girls? The ones that want your money yes. But there's easy ways to have sex for free with the local girls at the clubs. Only pay for a soapie.
Well I am from the UK and I have trained with a load of people who have been to Thailand, my instructor likes to keep it as similar to the Thai style as possible when we train. Well that's good then. Shouldn't be far off from traditional Muay Thai. Most trainers have different techniques on how to hold their hands, so each one will tell you something different but it's almost all the same anyways.
How much time do you get to train ? Must be hard with all the hookers around lol. At top team the first class starts at 7:00 A.M. and they end at 7 at night i believe. so it's a full day if you go to every class, which most people can't do it's extremely taxing. There aren't many bar girls around the fight rd. You have to take a taxi to get to those places, which is good for the weekends. During the week you may not go out much because you'll be way too tired. I thought i'd be fucking every night, but you simply just get too exhausted.
I live in Phuket Thailand and train MMA. I saw a picture of Robert Lek (wearing dragon muay thai shorts?), must of been old. What gym do you go to...Been here for about a year. on and off. Idk what shorts they were, but I took that picture at Top Team. I like top team more than tiger, better student to teacher ratio.
Whats your favorite thai food? Thai curry with rice pork and vegetables. I don't know the name of it specifically but it's delicious. Most all Thai people speak english enough to know what you're asking for though.
You could name the colour of the curry. Oh sorry, red curry by far my favorite.
Is phuket pronounced "Fuck-it"? Yea it's pronounced poo-ket.
I'm going to train at Sinbi next August. Is it true you can rent girlfriends for the week? Also when I try to book my flights it says it takes 23hours for the trip over and 30+ hours for the trip back. Any advice on how to shorten the flight time? Is Phuket flooded with Americans? Not many ways to shorten the flight unless you try to get rid of any layovers, but when I went I had no layover in tokyo and that was my only stop and it took like 20 hours or something like that, so yeah bring some sleeping pills. Phuket isn't really flooded with Americans, there's a little from everywhere there, honestly I was there for a month before I met another American, he was from california. Most are from australia, ireland, england, and germany. You can't really "rent" a girlfriend but you can get a girl to stay at your house if she likes you. Either she's a local and just wants to hang out, or you're going to pay a bargirl to hangout at your house. At night there's "short time" which is a fuck and they leave or "long time" which they fuck, sleep there with you, fuck in the morning and then leave. You can probably convince one to stay for a week I'm sure if you have the money.
Also, Thai fighters seem to not care about strength training in the same way Americans do (no S&C, barbells, dumbbells), but they focus on calisthenics. Can you tell me more about this, whether I'm right or wrong? Thanks a lot! They have barbells and such at the gym, I've seen the guys use it before. Probably don't do much strength training because of the lack of availability because that stuff is expensive. and because they may possibly think it will make them slower. Which speed is a big part of muay thai. So you're right to an extent yes, but the actual reasoning behind it I'm not sure. I had a trainer there that was absolutely massive, he HAD to be weight training. He was also a very good thai fighter and still actively fights so that adds to my confusion as to why they don't do it more often.
Thanks for your thoughtful answer! Being from an Asian country myself, the permeating ideology that strength training causes you to be slower will be tough to break through. Curious since you mentioned speed- can you tell me how you or the Thai fighters have been taught to increase speed in your techniques? Is it repetition or are there resistance exercises and such? They never specifically went over how to increase speed, but they have extremely low body fat, and did tons of cardio. speed came naturally the harder you pushed yourself and the faster your eye got at reading your opponent.
AMA. I can beat you up. What do you think about that? Idk...please don't?
Ooookkaaayyy, since you've begged and pleaded, I won't beat you up. WOO! thanks a ton man. I can't afford another hospital visit.
Hospitals are that expensive in Thailand??? Never had to go, so I wouldn't know exactly, but tom what i've heard they aren't that bad.
What kind of PEDs are rampant in the sport of Muay Thai? Here in the US, as you know, there is TRT in MMA, as well as blood doping or HGH-like substances. What about over there? Anything you've seen or heard? You can get steroids if you wanted too, some of the regular stuff at the pharmacies, and the harder shit you need to head to a doctor's office.
Did you plan to go to Thailand in advance or did you wake up one day and just say "Phuket"? Hahaha, buying the ticket i said fuck it.
Did you ever feel discouraged and just said "phucket"? Yes lots.
How do you get ripped? And how do u get laid? Eat like the thai people, and do a ton of cardio. and getting laid is fairly easy. bar girls are somewhat cheap, or you can go into a club and pick up a girl.
How do you pronounce phuket? Poo-Ket.
I might be visiting Bangkok next year. I want to see a Muay Thai match in Rajadamnern Stadium or the Lumpinee Stadium. Do you know how to get the fight schedules. I want to go when there is a good match. I wouldn't know exactly how to get a fight schedule, probably lumpinee stadium website? I've never been there to watch a fight personally. But definitely go either way, even the small stadiums get crazy loud with excitement I couldn't even imagine Lumpinee or Rajadamnern.
Thanks for the reply, man. I've been trying to find something that lists matches but with no luck. Thanks anyway. Yeah np.

Has there ever been a situation where you wished you had a firearm? Honestly, no. I can't think of any policing situation I've been in where either my options or the situation would have been improved by me carrying a firearm. The bulk of confrontations I've had have been at very close range, at a distance where honestly, I'm as likely to get shot with any weapon I'm carrying as use it effectively against a threat. At a distance, they're not armed, even if they run, I've a good chance of identifying and catching them, so what's the problem?
We also have excellent armed response capability, so if you do need firearms to be deployed, you get them within minutes.
I know it's very different to the US, or other countries where firearms are widespread and you have to assume that a criminal is armed. In the UK, it's simply not like that. Criminals don't carry guns, in general day to day criminality. They do not shoot at police as a first response. People who aim weapons at police kiss their freedom goodbye. The cop isn't going to shoot at you, so why shoot at the cop? It's an entirely different method of policing.
We really do police by consent: We police with the consent not only of the public, but the criminals themselves in many cases. It's an unwritten rule that you DO NOT shoot at police. Those that do feel the full wrath of the Police, the Courts, and the Prison system.
I feel I should add, I've shot all my life, I'm very competent with a long rifle, .22 rifle, and shotguns. Not pistols, since you can't legally own them or shoot them in the UK any more. But With that experience comes a healthy respect for firearms and their capability (and limitations). I'm not sure I could carry a firearm in a Policing capacity. I'm not even sure I could point one at another person! And as the french police say "It's just another thing to lose".
Great answer, very interesting response to all the gun fanatics in the USA. although, as you say, it's a totally different culture. Do you think it's too far gone over there or can that cultural tic ever be reversed? Nope. Too far gone. There's no way you can remove the guns or gun culture from America. I don't even engage that debate any more. Unless you can appreciate the fundamental differences, you'll never understand the differences in policing either side of the pond.
So wait, you're telling me that a citizen can get a permit and own a rifle or shotgun in the U.K.? What the hell am I still doing here, then? -_- YEs. A shotgun, the police need a good reason to turn you down for one. A Sec 1 Firearm (basically a non self loading rifle), you need good reason to won and shoot, but you can do so if you're a gun club member.
I've shot .22 rilfes, 7x64 and 6.5x55 deer rifles for most of my life, and shot competetively at uni.
Handguns, semi automatics, are basically unlawful in civilian hands, I can't be bothered to do a full explanation though!
What's your opinion on the death penalty? Has this changed from before you became a police officer. I'm a bit of a pinko lefty. I'm staunchly anti death penalty. I can argue it from a multitude of differnt angles. There's just no place for it in civilized society IMO. I wouldn't be happy gathering evidence to convict someone if I felt that the outcome of that might be taking their life away. If anything, being a police officer has hardened that view point because I see how easily mistakes can be made. I got into arguments on occasion with colleagues who were pro death penalty, defending my viewpoint on it.
Do you think it's right that nonviolent people, or people who are not a danger to society are sent to prison? That said, I think like all of us I've had times wehn I've thought "Waht is the purpose of this person living? They would be of more use to society as fertilizer"... BUt I recognise that as an emotional response, not a rational one.
What's your opinion on plebgate. IN some cases, yes. "Danger to society" is a very subjective term. Someone routinely shoplifting can cause businesses to fail through lost reveue. Same with fraudsters - sure, they might not really "harm" anyone, but we all pay inflated insurance costs to cover their theft. You'd be amazed what you can do in the UK and NOT be jailed. It really is used as a last resort. I just wished that jail was actual rehabilitation, and that I didn't have to catch peopel and send them back again and again. There was one guy who punctuated my career - he was one of my first good arrests, for burgalry. He got 2 years. Then I rearrested him, on another team. He got 18 months. Then I rearrested him, he got 18 months. Finally, he was one of my last arrests- I'd worked building evidence and got him to take 30 offences into consideration. He got three and a half years. That shouldn't happen. We should fix people like that. We've had enough chances too.
What do you think about Mike Barton's view on the war on drugs? I haven't followed it too closely - mainly because I just find the whole thing crushingly embarassing to be associated with, in any way. I remember the initial reports of waht happened, and how it just didn't go away, and I thought "This is really weird, over what is seemingly nothing, when the officer doesn't want to make a complaint and has acepted an aoplogy". Clearly, it was being used for political milage. So I stopped following it. What has come out is (if true) Frankly outrageous. I don't want to say any more.
You'll have to forgive me, I've been abroad a while and am not fully up to speed. HOwever, this article] ([Link to appears to characterise his argument as a pro legalisation one? IT's a compelling argument, and one I've long pondered in my own half-assed way. The war on drugs, at street level clearly isn't working. Addicts are still addicts, dealers are still getting rich. IMports keep going. Turning over street corners is futile. I've been involved in limited sucess using disruptive tactics in small areas, and taking out "Mid level" dealers. But we all know we're just shifting the problem on to a new location or person. Whilst the revenue stream is there, it will always be an attractive lifestyle for the disillusioned "yoot". I think that taking their market out from under them is a very sensible way to tackle the problem, and help addicts at the same time as not criminalising a large number of non-problem users.
But it takes a political will that I doubt we'll ever see in the UK. I also don't think you could make it work unless Europe followed suit - or we could just become a destination for users, and that brings a huge raft of problems.
What's the difference between a detective and a police officer? What's the process of being promoted to detective? (training, education, etc.) A Detective in the UK is a police officer. You have to join the police, wear uniform, train as a police officer, serve in uniform for a while to build experience. THis is being a PC - Police Constable. Many people make a career of this. Edit: I feel I should emphasise that becoming a Detective is not a promotion. You're equal rank to a Police Constable. Think of it more as a specialist role as an investigator, rather than a rank
After a while you might decide that you like investigation or show an aptitude for it. You generally then do attachments on various units to gain investigative experience, and gain a recommendation from supervisors to join "The Crime Wing". You are then a Training Detective Constable (TDC). You rotate around a number of units or disciplines, gaining a wide base of skills. The skills needed to investigate a fraud are very different form those needed to investigate Domestic Violence, for example, buy you'll need to be conversant in all of that and more. With that course passed, you're back into the work place, and complete a work place assessment which verifies all the skills you should now have. Completing that work book takes generally at least 12 months, often 18 months - 2 years. Once it's been checked off and verified, you are confirmed as a Detective at a ceremony. The whole process took me about 4 years start to finish.
Thanks very much for answering that. And congrats for making it through all that. Err, I wore a uniform for about 2 years, went into a case progression (bsic investigations unit) for 6 months, then went into a pro active team for about a year and a half, doing sting operations. Then I did gangs unit work before joinging the Crime wing - that was after about 4-5 years total "Uniform" policing. From there I stayed on the investigation sideof things. I've worn a uniform for less than 2 years out of a ten year career so far!
Just another quick question, how long were you a "basic" (not sure of the term) PC before you started detective training? There's no hard distinction. Some PC's spend a lot of time investigating and are excellent "detectives" but don't have a detective rank. The ranks are in parallel, so you don't really get promoted to detective, you have no authority over a PC. IT's an odd system, really.
I've heard being a detective often has longer hours, less opportunities for promotions and is generally more stressful than being a uniform police officer. Is this true? Not in the UK, really. It's on a par. There are positives and negatives to both roles.
Uniform officers tend not to carry as big a case load, and investigate simpler matters. So you don't take your work home with you as much. You turn up, you do what you're told, you deal with the incidents, you go home.
Detectives, you do carry a case load, and certainly I occasionally took work home with me (in my head, not a briefcase). I also worked the most ridiculous shifts, at times. Sometimes, when something had to be done, there was no option but to stay and do it. I was pulling 18-24 hour shifts fairly regularly, once a month or more, and the occasional time I wouldn't leave work for 40 hours. Sillyness. Uniform officers would be relieved, in general. We didn't ahve taht luxury - if I was the only person who know the case well enough to get the files done, I had to do them. It would have taken as long to explain to someone else in a handover, so you just do it.
Thanks. What are salaries like, if you don't mind me asking? Not bad, though I haven't had a pay rise in the last 5 years.
They're published, you can look them up. The media love to report that Police officers hammer overtime, and earn buckets. It's not generally true.
I earned a salary of about £29,000 a year, with allowances for where I worked bringing it to about £35,000. In total, with overtime, I earned about £45,000 a year but paid 11% into pension. I felt the money was generally fair, but getting less so as the cost of living rose dramatically but my pay didn't follow suit.
I was close to the top of my pay scale, so the only opportunity to earn more was overtime (not physically possible!) or promotion to Sergeant.
Were you ever in a situation that you thought might be your last? Probably a close quarters fight we got into in early in my career. We had to arrest a drunk guy for domestic violence, he was in his bedroom, and the girlfriend was distraught. He was getting increasingly violent, and whilst we were waiting for officers with shields to back us up, he started coming towards us. We had no choice but to take him on in his bedroom. It was me and a slim Female officer, also young in service and this guy threw her to the ground as I was trying to cuff him and then dragged a chest of drawers over with a big TV set on it, trapping her underneath. So it was me and him. I don't even really know what happened, apart from he was punching me in the head and I managed to get one cuff on him, get him off balance and dragged the cuff behind him. I was trying to pull his arm out of his socket, backwards, and managed ot kick the TV off my colleague so she could move out and jump on him too. Eventaully we got him cuffed and then our backup arrived.
Ever been shot at? It's silly little innocuous situations like that that suddenly go cmpletely wrong, and that one really could ahve gone both ways, because if he'd knocked me out, with my colleague incapacitated, he'd alreay demonstrated that he wanted to do us serious harm.
Ever have to kill a criminal? I also made several mistakes in that encounter which I've never repeated.
I've found guns on people and been in the middle of riots and gang fights since then and felt safer!
No, But I have had paving slabs thrown off of council estate blocks at me, from a height that cuts a car in two when they land on them.
Thankfully no. I've never carried a firearm for work, and I've never done anyone lasting harm through detaining them. It's not the UK way.
What mistakes could you have avoided with hindsight? Not getting back up en route sooner (as young in service officers I think we wanted to prove we could control the incident ourselves) not going to engage him as quickly, not taking him on in a confined space with lots of hazards, being terrible at "self defence" at that stage (I since took up Jiu Jitsu as I felt the training we were given was woefully inadequate).
Just a whole host of things really.
I think if I went into that same situation now, I could either have avoided the fight completely or ended it much sooner.
Most bizarre experience? Bizarre. OK, Screwed up story time, because it's more of a story than an experience as such.
She was sleeping with her half brother, who she'd only been introduced to as an adult. But they were biological half brother and sister. There was also some suggestion that she was sleeping with her son (aged 11) and her son certainly slept on the bed below them, whislt they banged away in the top bunk.
Then, the realtionship fell apart, and she alleged first that he'd poured petrol through her letterbox and tried to light it - however forensics proved that the petrol had been poured from inside the house - i.e. she'd done it herself.
Then she said that he'd threatened to kill her, and that he'd fired a pistol from his car thgouht her front window. We sent people down there, but they couldn't find any evidence of a shot ebing fired. Whilst this was going on, I was mounting a huge firearms response to get him stopped in the car, with the gun. About 30 mins later, she called me to tell me that she'd just heard from a relative that he'd just crashed his motorbike that moment and had been killed. Of course, that is trivial to check on police systems. She maintained for ages that this was what had happened.
I ended up prosecuting her for wasting police time. The sheer ridiculousness of the stories she came out with, and then backtracked on, was just utterly bizarre, and I never got the the bottom of why she was lying like that.
TL:DR: Crazies gonna crazy up the place!
It's either that, for an actual "bizarre experience" or cycling to work the afternoon of the 7/7 Bombings. My route took me past Edgeware road where the cordon tape was up and every emergency service unit in the world seemed to be there. The roads.. in fact London... was just deathly silent. I'd briefed myself up on the news as much as possible, and I just realised that nothing was going to be the same again. That evening, I saw Stephen Fry walking home, and he gave me a really friendly sort of "thank you" nod. IT was a very surreal evening.
What happened to the little boy? Was it ever proved or disproved that the mother was sleeping with him? Social services got involved. IT was strong rumour that incest was going on.
That bit about Stephen Fry bit feels weird. I live in Sheffield and whenever I see a police officer up close on foot I'm no quite sure what to do. I feel kind of like I should wave or nod or tell them good morning/afternoon/evening. (Assuming you're not busy at the time) What do you think is appropriate, if anything is appropriate at all? It's always nice when someone says hello in a genuine non sarcastic manner. Or "Good to see you out and about". Police do actually like leaving the station and meeting genuine folk, it's just that workloads mean it doesn't happen as much as it should.
Have you ever shot a gun into the air while screaming ARRRGGGHHH? No, but I have a new posting and I hope to achieve that dream.
How does it effect you as an officer to turn on the TV or radio and see this kind of coverage of the force on a frequent basis? It kind of grinds you down. In the line of work, you get shit from certain people every day, and you get used to it. That's not a problem.
How do you deal with it? But what you do need is a sense that you're doing it for the "other side", the group of people who don't swear at you just because of the uniform, and begrudginly accept that you probably do a difficult job and make their lives a bit safer. What the relentless media onslaught does, in my eyes, is give that sector of society good reason to view the police with more suspicion.
Any idea why it's happening? What happens is on occasion indefensible. Sometimes, you appreciate the difficult situation colleagues are in, and do not envy them the scrutiny their actions are under (I first felt that way about the Tomlinson incident, now, not so much when we know full facts). But everyone, from your mum to the bloke in the coffee shop has their opinion, and it's just fatiguing to be lumped in with all of that when you're turning up to work, doing your job, trying to do the best you can.
have you noticed a change in attitude from the public since this recent portrayal of the police in the media came about? I try to ignore it, and don't follow it blow by blow in papers or anything. I also make "hem haw" noises and don't try and defend actions of colleagues with some kind of blanket "he must have had his reasons" defence - any more. It's too much effort, and it discredits me if their actions are found to be wholly unjustified.
The cynic (conspiracy theorist nutjob?) in me says that the constant dredging up of Hillsborough, Stephen Lawrence, and many other incidents and their repeated placing in high profile media is part of a wider strategy to discredit and devalue the Police Service. The real nut job in me would say it all started when we began nicking MP's for fiddling expenses... But that person would be insane and not worth listening to ;)
Just to add, I'm all for full and frank exposure on police wrongdoing, I firmly believe that people have a right to know the truth, and above all the right to be policed by fair, honest Police.
Not really, I have to say. I think the Public are actually very resilient to the constant lambasting of Police. We've always been hated in certain quarters. But no-one likes their laundry being washed in public, and things like Plebgate need to be fully investigated, exposed, and done and dusted. Quickly. People should lose their jobs and in some cases their liberty if corruption and wrongdoing can be proven. Having this long, drawn out process is painful, and unhelpful.
TL;DR: Haters gonna Hate.
Thanks for doing this AMA. Your responses have been very informative and interesting. Stay alert when using ATM's. There are some very well rehearsed scams that operate at cash points, so have your other half act look out as you use the machine, and cover your PIN as you enter it.
My girlfriend and I will be in London in about one week's time for the 49ers-Jaguars NFL game at Wembley. What advice would you offer to non-natives coming into the city for a large scale event like this? I have visited London before, but this will be her first time traveling in the EU. Get in and out of Wembley quickly before and after the game. It's not the greatest of areas, and there will undoubtedly be groups of people looking to prey on the crowds. Try not to look too American! No fanny packs, big rucksacks, stupid baseball caps or walking boots. You just look like a target dressed like that! Make sure you visit the South bank of the Thames, and as many of the free museums as possible. We've nicked a lot of treasure from around the world over the years for you to enjoy! Beware cabs can be expensive, and slow. I'd recommend walking A-B in central areas. It's safe, things are close by, and you'll see loads of neat stuff you might otherwise have missed.
What is the case that has really stood out as being a horrible example of humanity, or total lack thereof? Hmmm, difficult one. There have been a few.
Probably the most harrowing was a gang rape. A young girl had been at a party and got really drunk, and tried to walk home. she got picked up by a fairly young gang member, who took her back to a derelict house with a few friends, who called a few friends... They gang raped her, inserted objects into her, filmed it on their phones, really horrifically graphic acts including getting one of their 12 year old "youngers" to rape her. THEN they took her drivers licence and keys and burgled her flat, knowing she'd be out of it for a while.
She was picked up on the street by a passerby, who called us.
We caught them all. I think we were all pretty shocked just by the level, extent and duration of sexual violence against her, and the total lack of any kind of compassion. Absolutely vile.
What sentences did these upstanding gentlemen receive? I can't remember exactly. It ranged from youth detention orders to something like 12 years for the two most serious, I think. Not enough, but I don't think it ever could be.
I can imagine the satisfaction of solving a case. Have you experienced burnouts where it just got all too overwhelming and you'd just want to escape? Yes. TO be honest, I was heading for one before I took this break.
At my worst, I had about 20 ongoing investigations, and they were all serious stuff like elderly people beaten in their own home, robberies, serious assaults, big investigations that needed a lot of work. ON top of that I was acting sergeant, so mentoring and monitoring 6 junior colleagues, allocating their workloads, oversight of about 100 further investigations that they were carrying. As well as that, I'd have shifts where I was on call, so the radio was on my desk and any major crime at all in our area, I had to respond to, and more often than not go out to to manage the crime scene and sort out what was going to be done. That could mean anything from 4 hours out of the shift, to not getting home for 36 hours.
On top of that I was convicting people fairly regularly, so had to be at court several days out of the month, preparing court files, things like that.
So it got pretty intense. I had my wife, who was suffering serious illness at home and we had a newborn child. I was out of the house 12-14 hours a day, getting home, trying to check that my wife wasn't actually dying... the combined work and home life pressure were intense. But I didn't crack. Some things didn't get done as quickly as they should have done, but everything got done. I'm proud of that, but want to avoid being in that situation in the future. When you get the call to go to a serious crime, the thought in your head should be "Great, something interesting to do!" Not "Oh god, I don't have time for this!"
How can we solve the 'gang problem' we have in London and our big cities? Tear down all the post code signs?
I don't know. We had a pretty effective strategy going, we founded our gang unit, and the model was adopted across the city. We worked on Engagement, Intervention, Intelligence, and Enforcement. We tried to work with schools to identify at risk children, 13-15. We'd engage with them and their families, offer them incentives like free tuition in sports or music (with really good people too) in return for them staying out of trouble and doing well in school. The feeling was that after 15, people are entrenched and they're not going to withdraw from the gang environment, it's their life and support group far more than college or family by then. We had limited success, and some kids did really well, but it's resource intensive and you can't catch everyone.
I'm sad to say I know kids who had been killed though gang violence, kids who I've sat in their living room with them in tears and their family offering all kinds of support - but then on the streets they're as tough as you like, selling drugs, acting the big man. Until someone bigger comes along.
I don't have the answers to that problem. It's about society, family, strong male role models, engagement in society and making them feel invested in their own future. There are so many negative influences, the positive ones get drowned out.
What movies/shows best portrays the UK police force? I didn't really watch many of them to give a well informed comment. I know "THe Bill" took their research seriously.
Hot Fuzz is remarkably well observed. Simon Pegg did a lot background research, and I saw that film at the cinema and there were specific points where only 20 or so people in the cinema laughed - they were the coppers, laughing at job jokes that the general population don't get. So although it's a throwaway comedy, it's really well observed and nails a lot of cop humour.
What's Luther like in person? I worked with a guy who looked just like him. He was a total bastard.
Additionally, how accurate is Law and Order UK to your actual job? (obviously assuming you go to less murders) I don't watch it, so I have no idea, sorry!
what was a hard decision you had to make to keep the other SO safe? IT was honestly the most intense day to day decision making I've ever done in the police. We'd get perhaps 20 allegations in a day, and you had to triage them and risk assess. I got to be a bit of an expert, I'd have the 10 most serious done in the first hour of the day, ready to get dished out to colleagues to get stuck into. We were balancing risk the WHOLE time. And it really is proper threat to life risk assessment. If you get it wrong, you're potentially leaving people in a lethal position.
say something you shouldn't to the girlfriend who you knew was lying or exaggerating? I only had one victim who I was convinced was going to die. She kept disappearing, and not answering her phone. She'd been subjected to REALLY brutal violence. Out and out could have killed her levels of violence. She didn't trust anyone any more. I was kicking down a door a week for a month, expecting to find her dead each time, and it would have been my fault... That was pretty stressful.
I know it goes down like that sometimes where the boyfriend or husband in some cases, is actually the victim in domestic abuse. No. I'm very, very restrained. I'm also a crafty bastard, and I knew that the courts could land a bigger punch than I was capable of. Domestic violence interviews are fun, because abusers are used to being in control of situations, and talking their way out of them. They LOVE to talk, and as a bloke, they felt they could talk to me on a level. Really, I just had to listen and steer the conversation. I got a perverse pleasure out if it, particularly when I could disprove what they were saying. The look of horror and then often the anger when you pulled the rug out from under them was priceless.
If I'd ever lost my rag and punched one, then they get to take my job, drag me through the courts, and probably get off whatever crime they might have committed. That's hardly me doing my job is it? I'm not there to convict, or decide punishment. I gather evidence, and send them to court.
We had to tread very carefully around such issues. There's lots of research done around victims of domestic violence, and how they engage with police and otehr support networks and agencies. We had a fantastic council team supporting us, providing support services to victims. It really took the pressure off of us, because we could concentrate on the evidence and the court work, they could concentrate on finding housing, benefits, financial and emotional support for the victims.
The few occasions someone was bare faced lying to try and get their significant other in trouble, it was generally pretty obvious.
It was something we were very aware of, but when you have the full facts at your disposal, and investigate something fully, it generally becomes apparent what has happened. I worked a diverse area, it wasn't as simple as "man on wife". We dealt with gay and lesbian realtionships, transgender and transexuals, the whole gamut of human relationships, so you dind't get stuck in the rut of "woman=victim, man=offender" so much.
What was the worst and most confronting thing you personally witnessed during the London riots? Honestly, it was sitting at home watching Croydon burn to the ground on TV. I'd finished a long shift, and dealt with a looter from some sporadic violence the previous night, which later flared into the riots. I've been in my little world, got my job done, then went home as normal. By the time I got home it was late and kicking off, and I remember watching that footage and thinking "Holy SHIT! I've got to go into that tomorrow"... Then it was cutting to my area, and showed a bunch of my mates, in plain clothes and uniform, In a cordon chasing youths off the road, which made me really proud.
The area I worked wasn't actually that badly hit, and the positivity from the community was outstanding. It was actually a really heart warming, positive experience. I was crashing on a mates sofa in London, I didn't go home for a week. I went to Primark and bought a pack of pants and a spare T-Shirt and just worked as much as I could work. I was in demand because of the gang work I'd done, I could identify a lot of the perpetrators through CCTV.
I almost feel bad saying it, but it was a really great couple of weeks. We got warrants, kicked in doors, and we had the resources and resolve we needed. A lot of our little targets had slipped up, and we got a chance to nick them, find stolen property, and drag them to a 24 hour court whilst the magistrate could still see plumes of smoke rising through the window.
The worst thing I personally saw was actually a kind of police generated mini riot. There was a bit of a gathering, with some known gang members, so we went up to check it out. I found one of the guys I knew really well, in tears. Knowing him as I did, I knew that that meant that either someone he knew had been stabbed, or he was about to stab someone. So I got talking to him and his brother, to try and calm him down in the midst of this group. Then, the uniform arrived, to a "gang fight in progress", and started diving on people. They dived on me, and tried to cuff me until I called the officer doing it by name and told him to fuck off. I dusted myself off and stood up to see a sea of probably 12 Officers struggling with 12 youths on the pavement and road, fists and handcuffs flying, and this guy who had been trying to cuff me said "This is why CID shouldn't deal with street fights"... I just scanned around and thought "this is why uniform shouldn't..."
It was the futility of that, I'd been trying to engage with this lad, find out what the issue was, perhaps find out what was going on, and it just ended up in a bundle of Police Vs Youth, a load of lads most of whom weren't that bad getting arrested and written up for minor offences and further alienated from the police at a time of heightened tensions. That really annoyed me.
What is the most gruesome scene you have witnessed? Ok, you went there. Went to a crime scene where a foreign guy was waiting outside his friends flat, saying his friend was "unwell" inside. We had to climb in through a window, where the smell told us that "unwell" equaled "really quite dead". HE was in the toilet, he'd fallen face first off the loo, with his trousers still around his ankles, and was dead on the bathroom floor. He looked like he'd been there a few days. From the stuff around, it was clear he'd injected himself with heroin. So, we called a doctor in. Me and the doctor have to roll this guy over to get a better look (I told the doctor he was dead, for some reason the doctor wanted us to be double sure), so together, we rolled this guy over, and his face, because it had been against the floor, was kind of stuck to it, so as he rolled, half his face came off. Then because he rolled, all the foetid air in his lungs exhaled over me and the doctor. The Doctor ran out and threw up in the sink. I held my composure, but only just. That image stayed with me for a while.
Have you ever been frustrated by an unsolved crime you were assigned? Yes, plenty. Sometimes you just need some little break that never comes, and you have to explain to someone that you can't solve whatever happened to them. A lot of assaults were like that - someone would punch someone else on a Saturday night, do them really serious damage, and you'd have grainy CCTV footage but that was it. Very hard to identify a suspect in many cases.
Have you ever investigated/solved a cold case? I turned over probably more than 300 crimes a year, my detection rate wasn't bad, but you have to accept that with enough time and resources, most crimes are solveable, but you don't have infinite time or resources. Murders, which get practically unlimited resources, have a 96% detection rate in the UK.
Where do all the coppers go for pints? I'm not sure what you mean by "cold case"? It means different things in different areas. In the UK, we had dedicated cold case review teams who reworked unsolved rapes and murders and other serious crime, to look for new opportunities. It wasn't something I was ever involved in, it's a very specialist field of investigation.
Wherever there's cheap beer.
No problem.

2012.09.07 16:14 fallax Trans* publications by UK organisations

As far as I'm aware, there's no good survey of all the trans* publications that have been made by UK government bodies and charitable organisations, so I've attempted to pull together a list of everything that's out there, in case it's useful to anyone else.
Possibly the single best source of resources is the Equality and Human Rights Commission's transgender resources page - most of the links below come from there.
There are definitely some important documents missing from here that I've not added yet, so please comment to suggest more. I'll be updating this post with more as I become aware of them. Please also let me know if there's a more useful way you can think of to organise these links - at the moment, I'm just trying to figure out what's even in them all...

2012.05.23 14:10 auragrid In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one judge blocks all gay marriages. (The "civil union" vs "marriage" controversy) (long, translated)

Google translation. I've made a couple of small tweaks and added emphasis.
The main LGBT destination of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro has become known as the Brazilian city least favorable to gay marriage.
All because of a series of decisions of a judge, who systematically denies the marriage between same sex in the city, alleging unconstitutional. The point is that this court - Luiz Henrique Oliveira Marques, the 1st Court of Public Registry of Rio - must pass all marriages in Rio, whether gay or heterosexual. Or is it with him or no marriage.
The subject is controversial because there is a final decision by the Brazilian courts, but from a judgment of the Supreme Court (STF), a year ago, is regarded by the courts with flexibility.
So much so, according to a survey of the Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (ABGLT), there have been more than one hundred marriages between same sex in Brazil. In Rio, however, only one was made official, with the endorsement of a judge.
The discussion on gay marriage is gaining momentum in Brazil for about a year. On May 5, 2011, the Supreme Court unanimously recognized the civil union between same sex couples. The decision was considered one of the greatest victories in the struggle for gay rights in the country and has become recognized as the rule for any court in Brazilian territory.
One problem, however, remains: the judgment of the Supreme Court dealt with the civil union of a gay couple and not a marriage. The differences between the two types of marriage go far beyond status. In marriage, the spouse can use the surname of her partner, can be entered as dependent on Social Security, the health plan or income tax. Moreover, one can sum the income of the household for any type of financing, the spouse is entitled to alimony in a separation, will automatically receive an inheritance in the event of death and has the right to adopt a child. Outside of marriage, all these issues need to pass the law.
Some judges felt that the Supreme Court's precedent would open to also accept the marriage between same sex. Others, such as de Oliveira Marques, no. The judge arrived at a Court Public Record two months before the judgment of the Supreme Court, arising from a Court of Exchequer. It is he who approves all marriages in Rio. Under his interpretation of the law, a homosexual couple cannot not marry in the city.
[Judge Oliveira Marques says:]
- In Rio, only I rule on this matter, due to the determination of the Judicial Organization Law of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Every marriage license is the responsibility of the Court of Public Registry, and has only one court in the city for this matter, what are we here - explains Oliveira Marques. - I know there are other judges that come with my position, as there are those who accept the marriage. An outlet that people should be finding another judgment is to look where it has been admitted. I imagine that this is happening. I would think differently, but it is my legal position and legal on the matter. Despite all the grief this may cause, I can not violate my conscience and my independence in judging.
The barrier to Oliveira Marques, is the absence of legislation to address the issue. Currently, Congress is considering a constitutional amendment (PEC) on equal civil marriage to any person in Brazil. Authored by Rep. Jean Wyllys (PSOL-RJ), declared himself a homosexual, the project needs 171 signatures to go to vote. For now, it has 113.
[gay politician Jean Wyllys responds:]
- The situation in Rio hides a homophobic sentiment - says Jean Wyllys. - The judge is forgetting that his role is to do justice. And there is an injustice when a considerable portion of the population has no right to life, liberty and happiness. Rio is the main tourist destination in Brazil and LGBT precisely this state, homosexuals can not marry. The posture of the judge does not match the face of Rio
Thanks to negative Marques de Oliveira, there are notaries in Rio that no longer accept additional cases of marriages between persons of the same sex. Last week, upon the request of Jean Wyllys, the Internal Affairs Division of the State of Justice issued a statement condemning the practice and reminding that the notary can not refuse to receive the documentation. They still do not directly accept the marriage of same sex because there is no specific legislation, but must submit requests to the judgement of public record.
For lack of computerized records of notaries in Brazil, there is no exact number of how many marriages have been performed. The first occurred shortly after the decision of the Supreme Court, in Jacarei, São Paulo, between a merchant and a hairdresser.
The path for those who have had their request for marriage rejected in the Public Registry Court is an appeal to the courts of second instance. If another refusal, should go to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) and then to the Supreme Court. In October, the Supreme Court has recognized civil marriage of two south Brazilians who had had their applications denied in the first and second instances. It was the first time that a country's high court accepted the action. However, unlike what happened with the trial of a civil union in the STF, the decision of the Supreme Court need not necessarily be followed by judges in lower courts. It all depends on interpretation.
[gay man trying to negotiate the system says:]
- My case is in Supreme Court, awaiting a decision - says the stylist Carlos Tufvesson, which since last year trying to convert its union with the architect Andrew Piva, who has lived for 17 years in marriage. - Hate crimes happen because they're not recognized by the state and citizens. The same arguments that are used today to prevent the marriage were used for decades to ban divorce. It is a cultural bias.
Tufvesson's marriage was relected by Oliveira Marques. He appealed, but Judge José Carlos Varanda, who handled the case, issued an order, before judging the action, refusing to act in the case because he could not "violate my conscience as a Roman Catholic and former student Jesuit. " Tufvesson then appealed to the Supreme Court and expects a trial date.
In Rio, the first gay marriage was made official only at the end of April this year. In a trial, judges of the 8th Civil Chamber of the Court accepted an appeal from a couple who had been prevented from legalizing marriage for the Public Registry of the Court of Judge Oliveira Marques.
[A lawyer who handles these cases:]
- There was a decision from the Supreme Court admitting the civil marriage of same sex, but until now was only one decision. It would require a decision of the Supreme or a new law passed that all judges to accept the marriage - explained public defender Roger Franklyn, the Center for Defense of Sexual Diversity. - Technically, the judge of the Court of Public Registry is not wrong in its interpretation. The Supreme Court spoke only about civil union. But interpretation is a very closed, does not match the current time.
Some say that the decisions of Oliveira Marques have religious motivation. He denies this, saying that religion does not matter. The judge said "not many cases" of applications for marriage of same-sex couples who come to him. But those who come, at least for now, will continue to be denied.
[Judge Oliveira Marques:]
- My arguments are legal. Our legal system does not allow the marriage of same sex, pure and simple - he says. - It has nothing to do with religion. I'm judge and a judge needs to abstract from these other concepts as much as possible to judge. Even if I adopt a religion which was contrary, I should judge before the law.

Seen any golden comment ratings like this one during your time? Lots of them. I think my favorite was the one that said, "Avoid him like the plague...but if you must choose, take the Plague. Here you go: Top 100 ratings I ever saw. It was one of the things I compiled while I was there. Don't think they ever used it though.
How many professors, to your knowledge have been terminated due to bad reviews on the site? None. But one (a tenured professor) was terminated for posting bad reviews for his colleagues. Edit: News article about the professor
How would they ever find out he was the one posting? Writing style. It can be as good as a signature if you aren't careful.
Did professors often complain to you all about negative reviews? Yes, all the time. I think the most outrageous (i.e. WTF outrageous) complaint came from a fencing professor who required her students to write two major papers, read three books, maintain a rigorous diet and exercise routine and keep a log book to prove that they had. All this for a one credit course. She told me all this and then demanded that I remove a rating that claimed her course was too demanding. Yeah...right.
You’re in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can’t, not without your help. But you’re not helping. Why is that? Because I'm dreaming and I know I'm about to wake up.
So there's this one professor at my college whom is a complete and utter racist (he's black). He despises the white students in his classes, even to the point of calling them "vanillas" and "crackers." Yet, every time I try to post something about him on RateMyProfessor - even something as simple as "Worst teacher I've ever encountered, extremely biased and racist, avoid at all costs" - it gets deleted. Any reason for this? Is "racist" a taboo word? What should I write so that my posts remain on the site for other prospective students to view? Yes, and in this case its unfortunate. However, you really should be talking to your department head about this professor. RMP is a great resource but this situation calls for something more.
Why? It happens. People sometimes have professors who are biased towards certain groups of students (I once had a teacher where your English abilities directly correlated with how much he liked you) - it happens! In order to give an honest review, sometimes you have to say "This professor is racist as shit, yo!" Why can't you? Where I live, accusations of racism can really put a professor in a world of hurt. Its a very, very serious accusation. Not allowing it seemed like the best way to protect the professors and by proxy, the site.
Sort of a comment question. A soci prof at my uni did a quick and dirty analysis of prof rating on that site corelating with gendeethnicity. Maybe unsurprisingly, women, visible minorities, and those who other than english as a primary language were consistently rated lower. Any insight? (note this was at a N. American uni) Not being able to understand a professor can be a major turn off for a student who is there to learn from them. The thing about women getting lower ratings than men is surprising to me and I really can't explain why other ethnicities didn't receive as high reviews unless its because they also didn't speak English as their first language.
Are professors ever successful at having bad reviews removed from their ratings? When I was there, it would take a really good reason. Threatening to sue the site didn't qualify. Edit: Typo.
What consists of a "really good reason"? It was a case by case thing. There was a transexual professor who was reeceiving mocking ratings about their sex change. Then there was the professor whose bad ratings were being used in a custody dispute (I told her that I would take them down for six months and then restore them. That was enough for her, and when the six months were over, the ratings got restored).
Did many professors actually do that? Threaten the site? All the time! It was like they thought they had to in order to be taken seriously. I once had a husband and wife send me the same threat (word for word) on the same day because of a situation that I was not only already aware of, but was working on with the assistance of one of their colleagues.
What was the situation you were "working on"? There was a professor who was rating his colleagues poorly.
Very cool AMA. I love this website and I use it all the time when enrolling for classes. Whoever came up with the idea is a genius. Was there every any trouble in professors banding together to try to shut down the site? There was talk of them banding together but they never did. Edit: Unless you count this The person who came up with the site was John Swapsceinski. He was a grad student at San Jose University where he had a HORRIBLE professor. She was the inspiration for this site.
What was the best part about your work experience there? And, if I may ask, what do you do for a living now that you have moved on from there? Between the crappy economy and my lack of formal credentials I had a really hard time finding a new job but these days I work part time for a local newspaper. When I first heard about the site I knew it was going to be big. Being apart of the building process was the best part.
Do I need to be worry about posting negative reviews? Absolutely not.
Does anything get kept from me? IP? Yeah but nothing that would identify you to us specifically. At least not without the help of the FBI and they usually have better things to do. Although I do believe they made time for that terrorist threat that somebody posted at Disney World's school. Edit: typo.
Disney World has its own school? Yes, actually. That surprised me too.
Does any data exist correlating professor ratings to class attendance or signups? Not that I know of. Most researchers seemed too caught up with the "hotness rating" to pay attention to any content of the review. Which always kind of annoyed me.
What's the strangest comment anybody posted about their professor? That's a tough one. There are so many different varieties of strange. There was a rating that Klingon though that might qualify.
I was on that site right at the start. One thing I noticed was that it seemed like some professors were recruiting reviews or reviewers because they all had about the same tone to them and I knew from having those professors about how good or bad of a job they did. Did you guys ever notice skewing of results due to that? Yes but there wasn't a lot we would do about it unless they were all coming from one person.
My professor in community college said she threatened to sue in order to have comments removed from that site. Was she lying? How often does this happen? If I handled that request I would have told her to pound sand. No rating was ever removed just because of a lawsuit threat.
Would you take this guy? Nope, sounds pretty full of himself.
As a Prof outside the US and UK, is there a chance RMP would make it elsewhere - if not, why not? Probably not. We had expanded to Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and we were working on expanding to India, but the legal eagles at Viacom made us discontinue those countries. I can't remember why.
Were there ever professor requests that you were forced or asked to remove? None that I recall.
Were there any requests you chose to ignore? Why? At one point, I was having to redo the backend (in CSS -- a language I was having to learn on the fly), review ratings, and a bunch of other stuff as well. Plus there was the email. I didn't have time for everything and everybody else was equally busy. I'd been doing the email by myself for over a year. It took hours to do every day and I was so sick of it. So the email went by the wayside. I'm not proud of that decision but at the time it felt like it was the right one to make. To everybody whose requests and emails were ignore: I'm sorry.
How were you able to keep the site up when people were clearly posting things that could be considered defamatory? The libel laws in the US are pretty lax compared to those in other countries. So long as its an opinion, its not defamation. Also the site was not liable for the content posted by other people. Never the less we did do our best to remove anything truly damaging to a professor's reputation.
Ah ya, would you say the changes are all bad? Honestly I haven't browsed the site in depth so I can't say. I make a point of staying off of it.
Do you have any screenshots of the old site? What did they change? Here you go: RMP through the years
Any funny stories about the 'HOT?' Rating? The only thing really funny about it is was how wrapped up professors and researchers and journalists were over it. It really wasn't a big deal. We didn't even keep track of which ratings came with peppers and "not hot" votes.
Have you ever like, picked up the phone and called 911? Would the police come to your office and request all the information related to the post off your servers? How would it work? What is your educational background? The police wouldn't come to my office because I was always too far away. Besides the servers were in another state (we used a hosting service, don't ask me which one, I don't know). As for my educational background, I have a bachelor's degree in history. I also minored in anthropology. Sorry for the slow response. I didn't see this question earlier. Never called 911, but did once call campus police over a very graphic death threat. I was told that I needed to come in and make the report in person. This was after explaining who I was, where I lived (nowhere near the school) and exactly what the rating said. Eventually the person I spoke to said that she would file the report for me the following day. I never heard what happened after that. I did try to call the department but their voice mail was full. Really didn't know what else to do and since the site was sort of between owners at that time (mtvU had just made their purchase but the command structure wasn't remotely clear), there was no one to ask.
Was the site ever related to RateMyTeachers, or were they just spun off of the same general idea and kept separate? Yes actually they were. John Swapsceinski, who started RateMyProfessors teamed up with Michael Hussey and started RMT. It was a quid-pro-quo thing. RMP got a new design and name (Hussey owned the RateMy brand) and Hussey got RateMyTeachers. Fast forward a few years and the person who bought RMP from John (and flipped...errr...sold it to Viacom) bought RateMyTeachers and started looking to flip it to someone else.
What avenues do the teachers have to protest bad ratings? There was recently a article about the site in my school newspaper, and a few professors said people were giving them bad reviews for a course the professor did not even teach (one example). So, in a case like this, what could the teacher do? Would they even have a fair shot at getting it straightened out? Again, I don't work there anymore, but when I did, professors could send an email and I would take a look at it. Since professors just don't spontaneously receive ten, fifteen, or more ratings in one day for no reason, I would remove all the ratings received on that day and then keep an eye on it for another week or so in case they continued to get spammed.
Why is there such a short character limit in the write-up box? Because reviewing ratings is a VERY tedious task.
I can't see why you couldn't implement a spam filter, any thoughts on that? Basically what dbarts21 said. Spam filters are finicky things, good at finding one particular kind of spam, but the more you ask of it, the worse it does. Ratings needed to be read because there were so many different things that could be wrong with them.
Do you think that ratemyprofessor provides a service that actually affects the university in any real way? Yes. RMP influences the choices students make. As a result the classes of bad professors don't fill up as quickly, if at all. Perhaps some classes have even been canceled because of a low signup. Although no school will come out and admit it, some of them do use RMP deciding who to hire. I know this because I handled an email from someone on a hiring committee. There has also been talk about this very thing on the Chronicles of Higher Educations forums. I'll write more later after I get back from work.
How hard is to get a job in this type of field really? I'm going for either a B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science and am always curious about that. Also, is the pay somewhat reasonable? Its probably quite easy -- if you have a degree in computer science. Unfortunately my degree is in history. I thought the pay was good, its was certainly better than what I make now.
Http:// ಠ_ಠ I never said it was a big school.
1) Did the website ever censor any reviews (without a professor asking them to with good reasons)? Yes, absolutely. That's what the moderation system was for. Moderators had the option of removing the entire rating or just the comment. If there was just a minor problem with the comment (a bit of name calling, accusations of racism, or the person just signed their name at the end) then the comment would be removed and the numerical rating would stay. But if the rating was for a fake course or if it was obvious that the student had never taken the professor (i.e. the professor referred to as female when they were a male) then the entire rating was removed.
2) Were there any professors you could tell were bumping up their profile with fake student accounts? Yeah, a few.
Maybe a tax return? Do-able, but RMP isn't on them. My paychecks were signed by somebody from MTV Networks.
Were people ever clamoring for pictures of the "hot" teachers to be posted? Nope, not really. We did have a picture feature though. I don't know if its still there or not.
Thanks for doing the AMAA - could you comment on traffic / volume trends you observed? It seems like RMP "peaked" a couple years ago and incoming volume has dropped off a bit. Also, is there a good way to list all members of a particular department without having to browse alphabetically? I've always found that frustrating. I really can't. I used to pay very close attention to the number of ratings, but its been so long that I just don't really know what's going on behind the scenes anymore.
I used to do the moderation for my alma mater until the site was sold to mtvU. Did you enjoy it before the sale, or after? Do you think mtvU ultimately helped the site? I enjoyed it more before than after, but do not believe that the site could have remained an independent entity. At least not under the current management. Had the founder not sold it to the people he sold it to, it would probably still be independent to this day. But they (or at least one of them) bought it with the intention of flipping it to the highest bidder, which turned out to be mtvU. Had mtvU not come along, I do not know if the site would still be online.
Did you ever get emails from professors requesting you alter their ratings? No, I never did. They generally wanted them removed (or restored) wholesale. I did have somebody who had been spammed ask for their pepper back. I said sure.
Why you guys no update the RMP app? That was after my time. There was no RMP ap when I left. Chances are though they don't have the manpower.
Can you tell me what are the biggest DOs and DONTs for this kind of websites? DO have a moderation system. Early on, RMP had some pretty serious competition from another site (TeacherRatings?), but that site was sued for defamation and went offline voluntarily. They admitted that this was because they had a no-rating-removal policy...sort of like RipOffReport. DON'T assume that professors are the bad guys. They aren't. There are many good professors out there and may scumball students. Therefore you should try and be as neutral as possible.
What's the best way to monetize a site like this without ads? I don't know that this is possible. The person who started RMP had a subscription service, a cafe press store, and butt load of ads. Our traffic numbers were really good, the site was growing at a phenomenal rate, but none of this brought in enough money for him to quit his day job. Before anybody points to Wikipedia as a site that doesn't have ads but does manage to stay online, let me remind you about their biannual fundraisers. Plus they get server space from Yahoo free of charge.
Does slander law come into play with a service like this? Yes, absolutely. That's another reason (one that I had forgotten) that accusations of racism and sexism were removed.
What about accusations of dickory? You mean accusations of being a dick? Those were allowed.
Is there ready script for RateMy type of website? PHP+SQL would be great. Not that I know of....
Why did you leave your work? I was laid off. :-(
What OS do you use? Windows 7. Home edition.
